Historically, on the 9th of May, Ukraine celebrated the now-descredited holiday, Victory Day.
In 2023, Ukrainian President Volodomyyr Zelenskyy made the symbolic decision to abandon the Soviet-era holiday, electing to commemorate Europe Day instead.
This year, however, the decision carries real weight, as discussions regarding Ukraine's accession to the European Union, slowly but surely, gain more and more traction.
The advanced discussions are set to happen after the upcoming European election, as currently, the European body is focused on reaching a consensus with the bloc's disgruntled farmers, who are critical of cheaper Ukrainian farming exports destabilizing the domestic markets.
After the election's results, more will be known regarding the ideological shape and political hopes of the newly elected European officials, chosen for a 5-year term.
At the end of June, European leaders will sign a strategic agenda for the next European Commission regarding European reform.
The expectation is that Poland, which is to take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in 2025, will start to lay the foundations for enlargement.
Join Jan Darasz and his guest Daniel Szeligowski, Coordinator of the Eastern Europe program at the Polish Institute of International Affairs, in this episode of How We Got Here to learn more about the challenges that lie ahead of Ukraine's membership to the EU.

It's unlikely that part of Canada will join EU.

As an American it would be bad for Canada to join the EU. Canada and America are close and enjoy a robust trading relation. But Canada is the only NATO member that is allowed to fly its military aircraft over US land on a regular bases. Any and all other NATO members have to have special permission and good cause. So while America is friends with EU nations. America, Canada and Australia have been very close militarily. You see one the other two are near by. I would like for it to remain that way.

My question as a citizen of an EU country: What are you talking about ? 🤔

I am American and yes this does effect me as well. Poland gets EU subsidies for agriculture which allows Poland to spend more on defense. Ukraine is dirt poor and the way the EU regulations work the subsidy will be removed from Poland and sent to Ukraine. This is bad for NATO, bad for America. Just stop with Ukraine military experience. They do not have a commanding officer capable of NATO operations or a professional soldier that could carry that order out. It is like say that someone that survived a car accident should be the CEO of BMW. Ukraine has nothing to offer the EU or NATO.

Ukraine has abundant natural resources, including lithium, cobalt, titanium, and rare earth minerals. The estimated value of these reserves is approximately 6.7 billion. Additionally, Ukraine possesses significant reserves of natural gas and oil, with approximately 40% of these resources currently under Russian control. Furthermore, Ukraine is a major global producer of sunflower oil and wheat.

@@Daniel-Hawk I am American and we are a major exporter of gas and oil. "6.7 billion" is nothing to us. Our last Aircraft Carrier cost more than $13 billion. Sun flowers and wheat? That may matter to Africa or Egypt. I stand by my original comment.

That is just a lie There is no evidence of all this big resources and even if some are there it is not clear if they are economical viable and when. Congo s cobalt reserves are at least 40 times bigger and can be mined at half the price or better
