We have an exchange with our neighbors where we give him all of our leftovers and he gives us eggs. I also help to care for the chickens when they go on vacation. I’m going to make him one of these as a gift. He has those old style ones and they get really nasty and are a pain to clean out and refill.

That’s awesome. Having people you can share help with is great. These work great except for the winter. I haven’t found a way to keep cups from freezing in the winter but it’s great the other 3 seasons.

Love this way of creating a water feeder... As you mentioned, the only downfall is they hop on top of the bucket and poop can drop into the cups... I have an idea... Get a sheet of thin white plastic, cut it to length to create a cone to fit over the bucket lid... Drill some holes and use tie straps to secure the funnel shape... Hope this helps you and others... Might even be nice to do another video of making yours... At 70 I hope I'm not too old to keep up with my first time having chickens... My 6 chicks are 4 weeks old and I'm shocked how fast they are growing...

That would work great. Cone tops definitely eliminate that. I actually had a small traffic cone and stuck that on top for a while and it seemed to eliminate that issue. That’s great you have some chicks going. They really do change quickly in those first 6 or so weeks.

I have been having these cups for well over a year. I finally went to Lowes and got a 25 gallon garbage can and made this. So far so good. I was a bit afraid that the weight of the water would compromise the can but it looks ok for now. Next up, the same can with feed in it. I have had those fittings too........for over a year now...but feed isnt half as bad as dealing with water. I had a self watering system but it froze and I never set it back up., This was much easier

Excellent job on the video and great product review as well. You were very detailed but not overly talkative. We've had chickens now since early 2020/2021. I forget. We've tried several watering and food systems over the years from dog bowls to manipulated water gallon jugs. I recently bought 5-gallon buckets and now I want to convert a trash can into a large watering system. I bought those red nipples with the yellow pecker thingy a year ago off Amazon and most were immediately defective so I stopped using them. However, it's gotten old changing the water multiple times a day not to mention, wasteful as chicken's will scratch and throw dirt into their water bowl. I'll probably make this bucket system in the morning or use our big blue recycling trash can to hold more water if the nipples don't affix to the thin plastic recycling can. Again, kudos on the video and thanks for the introduction to Rent a Coop..

You've made a top-notch video; off-the-charts in cadence, information, flow and the confidence that comes from integrity. Thank you!! QUESTION: Do you think that I could substitute the top for one of those snap-on screw lids? I like the idea of easy accessibility for the refill.
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. I don’t see any reason that the screw lid wouldn’t work. I’d just drill the small hole near the top of the bucket to allow the needed ventilation to prevent vacuuming. Drill into the bucket would hopefully reduce the chance of splitting in the screw top lid. They’re a little more rigid If I’m thinking of the correct type lid. I hope that helps and thanks for watching

They said they had the 6 packs on order and should be available in a couple weeks and that the link showing should work once they’re in stock. Their standard cups don’t have the liner so that’s probably all that’s available currently. I use both and both work well. A quick and easy way to clean the standard ones of debris Is a use an old milk jug filled with water and I pour it in the cups flushing out the debris. I do it each morning and works well.

I watched this today. Interesting inco. Will look into vor warm weather watering. I live in area where it freezes several months of year. I use a rubber pan for water now. When water freezes, I turn it over and stomp out ice, then refill. Easiest method for me here. What do you suggest for winter months, without using a heating source. I can tell you are from Southern area because of acceent😉. This product , In my opinion, would not work in freezing climate
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead Жыл бұрын
You’re very accurate in the freezing temps will result in them not working. I as well use the rubber bowls in the winter months. Outside of a heated waterer I honestly don’t of a better option than the rubber bowls. You’re correct too in I’m in the south. Fortunately only about 3 months of the year cause me some freezing issues. I appreciate you watching and sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

That’s a good point and smart for thinking about that. I will admit they don’t perform well below freezing temps. I’ve not had them break from freezing but obviously the water won’t flow when froze. We place our rubber bowls or a heated waterer in the heart of winter. We’re in the mid Atlantic area so for us the winters aren’t as harsh.

Would these work with a metal bucket?
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead Жыл бұрын
I don’t see why they wouldn’t. The only issue would possible be how well they’d thread in with the sharpness of the metal. I’d suspect the plastic material almost becomes threaded as it’s screws in.
@jd5179
@jd5179 Жыл бұрын
Been using that for 2 years - and opt to go nipple style water system. - thread on that thing goes brittle and it will break over time (specially if its on direct sunlight) and it does not solve the issue of crud that accumulates over time in that cup. Disaster happened the worst time- (i was out vacation for 1 week). Thank god i installed camera inside the coop and chicken run- one of the hens accidentally knock the cup and it broke the screw type pipe- and it drained the whole bucket. I was able to ask a family member to pay a visit and put a bowl of water as a temporary fix . My suggestion if you are going to use this - make sure you have 2 or more buckets- just in case one fails- you have a backup.
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead Жыл бұрын
That stinks that yours broke. I’ve been lucky and the only cup I had break was the result of me dropping the bucket once and it cause the internal spring to break. You do bring up a good point for having multiple waterers when out of town. We set up 3 waterers when we go out of town so as a fail safe and to make it easier on the person tending to our birds. Thanks for sharing your experience.

@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead Жыл бұрын
I haven’t had that issue so I’m not really sure of a recommendation. I was thinking it could’ve been a space issue resulting in them getting bumped but I’ve used it with my broilers too which is closer quarters without issue so I’m not sure that’s the issue either. Sorry they didn’t work out for you.

I wonder if they can sell you and others the cup inserts for your older cups. It sure would save a lot of people money. At the same time, i am sure you would need replacements for the future should you lose an insert or two.

About to do something like this but what about in the cold weather. If there’s water in the cups, even with a heater, won’t the water in the cups freeze?
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead Жыл бұрын
That is a good question and yes they do freeze. We’re fortunate that we tend to be below freezing in the night but most days temps get above freezing and the cups thaw. If we get a long stretch of cold, I’ll add a rubber bowl with water to their run. The freezing surprisingly hasn’t caused damage to the cups.

Depending on how cold your area gets the cups do freeze sometimes. For the most part ours have frozen overnight but thaw as the day progresses so doesn’t cause too much issue for us. Fortunately the freezing doesn’t seem to break them. Definitely a consideration for winter time though

I’d say I’ve averaged about 2-3 years life per cup. I don’t put them away in winter so I’d assume freezing wears on them over time.
