My sheep eat straw a lot. I don't know why, our fields are green but when I put down fresh straw they come after it like it's a treat. In my chicken house all the pine shavings seen to just vanish, no idea where it goes

Some animals are weird, I have one pig out of 5 who seems to like to eat straw as well 🤷🏻‍♂️. The chickens definitely break down the shavings or knock them out some how. Seems like within a month they do disappear.

I agree 100% with putting straw in my nesting boxes I did that I have a lot less broken eggs and they’re much cleaner

The homestead looks good in autumn! I like the name Oatmeal for the rooster. His neck is the color of oatmeal, he has a strawberry on top, and brown sugar on his back.

@@RockyCreekHomestead me too, at his point I just have to build the infrastructure because I have a good breeding stock...would like to go pure Kune at some point even though 2 are almost registerable. Again, thank you for sharing the knowledge 😎

I agree with you 100% on the bedding for inside the coop. I’ve been a big proponent of hemp until this year and the industry has priced me out of it so I’m going to wood shavings for spring and summer and wood shavings with straw on top until hemp becomes reasonable it’s totally unreasonable now, but it’s the best bedding I’ve ever seen and it will last easily a year or more and stay clean with no smell. Thanks for your input on your video!😊

Thank you and thanks for sharing your experiences. I’ve heard wonderful things about hemp bedding, but like you said, when I looked into it, the prices blew me away. Hopefully as production increases, the pricing will slowly come down to a more reasonable amount.

I recently tried a bag of hemp bedding and really like it for in rabbit nest boxes, costly though so I use hay for other bedding (just rabbits).

I’ve heard great things about it, it’s just so pricey. I could see it being applicable for smaller scale uses

Thank you for explaining the difference in hay and straw for bedding. I will use straw for my animals this year. I will be working on getting pens and coops ready in the next week. We had a little cold spell but it has been back up to 80s this week. Actually a bit hot with the bright sunshine. I am catching up on videos. 😊

The weather has been crazy here as well. We’ve had some 30+ degree swings and has the animals and plants all confused. I’m not in a hurry for cold weather so I’ll hang on to warmth as long as I can

I agree about hemp bedding. I’ve never tried it either because I know I’ll never spend that kind of money on betting. If you have a little flock and a little coop, it might work great but I’ve got 15 chickens and I can’t afford to use hemp bedding.

Thank you for this video. I am getting my first coop ready for the chickens and have been trying to decide what to use for the floor and nesting boxes. If I use the pine shavings can they be used in the garden as fertilizer when I clean out the coop?
@RockyCreekHomestead

Yes they can compost and be added to the garden without issues.

Thank you. The multi colored one is actually a mix that hatched on our property. I know he’s definitely 1/2 Ayam Cemani as that’s the only rooster I had at that time, but I suspect the other 1/2 to be welsummer
