In this review I'll discuss my experience with the Rockymounts guiderail 2 and express whether or not I felt it was worth the $$$ to upgrade from my Oneup HD.

when locking two bikes with the chain-- only do the loop on the inner bike but pass the chain thru the outer bike's frame. locks both bikes, but more efficient with the chain length.

Great video, Liked and subbed! Two quick questions: can you open your GX’s barn door with the Guiderail on (but without bikes)? Also, have you thought about upgrading to the 1up Equip-D, which is also in the $800 range?
@MTBJonnie10 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yes, this one got out of the way enough for the barn door. UNLIKE my Kuat Piston which doesn't clear the barn door. I wish I'd have known that before selling the guiderail for the Kuat.

@@MTBJonnie thanks for getting back. Trying to decide between the Guiderail and 1up, as those are pretty much only ones that would allows us to open the barn door without any bikes on. May i ask why you sold the Guiderail? Was there anything you didn’t like? Thanks again for posting this vid!

I was sold on this rack until you showed that movement. Back to square one between this and the 1up.

I’ve found that you just have to keep tightening the bolt but to me that’s a design flaw.

That hasn't been my experiences after a month of use. Def need to use a socket wrench and not what they provide to prevent shaking

I have no seen that movement at all in mine. Mine is incredibly sturdy. You have all the washers on the hitch pin bolt? That isn’t right

Most of the time I only need a single tray, but there are also times where I need to carry four bikes. This left the Quikr Mach 2 as the most logical option for me.

Buy some sheet metal and build some shims to insert into the bottom or top of the hitch. Use a grinder to get the perfect thickness, for example if you want to taper the shim to be thicker or thinner further in the hitch vs out. Add a 90 degree bend and place it on the rack male part before inserting so the shim won't fall out.
@MTBJonnie11 ай бұрын
I understand that with some custom fabricating one can reduce or eliminate the movement. I just think that for as much as it costs I shouldn’t have to bust out the toolbox and fab.

Worth noting I just received my GuideRail 2 inch receiver rack last week and it does have a little ball/wedge that comes out as the hitch bolt gets tightened. Maybe there is a first version that didn’t get that?

What about chain ⛓️💥 locks for the wheels? Those are easy to steal in minutes. Gotta lock them up especially with expensive carbon wheels
@AndrewSmyk6 ай бұрын
Surprising that Rocky Mounts did put in a stabilizing system on the receiver to eliminate the wobble.

They did it just comes loose all the time. Now the lever for one of the rails broke.

Yeah, bike racks are getting insane on prices. I think I paid $650 for my 1UP two tray hitch rack in black. The Kuat piston pro X is $1400 and supposed to be a superior design to the 1UP as well. Everyone is taking what 1UP did and attempting to make it better. I'm not sure if the Kuat has wabble in hitch like the Rockymounts does. I've had my 1UP from 2015 and its been solid but thinking of upgrading. One thing I like about it is that ball that keeps it solid in the hitch so that it doesn't wabble.

How’s the clearance compared to the 1Up since that was a key point for you?

I bought a Saris MTR last year and its pretty good for the most part. The hitch bolt has a wedge devise that removes almost all play. But I found a few things really frustrating. Namely the wheel chocks in the arms needed to be unbolted to move and with 6 different bikes this sucks. So I bought some bolts and had a machines shop drill small holes to fit a pin at the end so I could have a "quick release" system. But less than ideal. It also has wheel chocks in the tray that were not adjustable so again this was problematic with different wheel sizes. It was also heavy and stiff to fold up and down. Fine for me as a bigger guy but still annoying. Lastly the teeth on the arm ratchets went and seemingly I would need to by a new arm. So I ended up buying the Kuat Piston Pro X a few weeks back. Much better system that addressed all the above issues. Plus it comes with integrated lights which was also an issue. The Kuat also had a great add on system that takes a few minutes to install so I bought a 3rd tray for the few times I need to take my kid and a friend. One disappointing thing with the Kuat is the lack of a handle at the end for lifting and lowering the rack. I lowered it with 2 mtb on it and it was really tough to get back to level. Near impossible trying to work around the bikes etc. But the end cap is removable (for adding extra bike trays) so hopefully they develop a handled one that can just be retrofitted. Was looking at this Rocky Mounts but after seeing your video Im glad I passed.

I currently do not have a rack. I am considering the 1up and the Rocky.Mounts Guardrail. It will be going off road when camping etc. If you did not have any rack to start with which would you get?
@MTBJonnie2 ай бұрын
@@teresad7174 I’ve had both and would probably get the 1up if starting over with no racks.
@richardlee74248 ай бұрын
If you crank down on the hitch pin with a socket wrench, the vertical play goes away.
@MTBJonnie8 ай бұрын
It sure does but then comes back after driving around for just a little bit. I am always cranking down on it and it loosens back up. Honestly I think I’m just gonna go back to the Oneup.
@mattd711444 ай бұрын
Hi how have the plastic teeth held up and metal levers? Also I saw that you have the hitch pin in from the left, try reversing it and screw it in from the right, I saw a video that shows the expander ball only works if you do it that direction. Let us know if that makes it better?
@MTBJonnie4 ай бұрын
Teeth doing fine. One blue tab already snapped but they warrantied it. They also sent me a new locking washer that stopped the bolt from backing out.

@@MTBJonnie Thanks for the info. When the rack is folded upright, is the chain long enough to thread through one of the hitch loops to the built-in lock? Seems like it would be good extra security to prevent the rack being stolen when at a trailhead.

@@mattd71144 honestly not sure. Hadn’t even thought of that.
