In 1966, I was in the USAF and invited to go visit Cheyenne Mountain and NORAD. What an exciting experience. I was in my Class A Uniform, heels; I had no idea what I was in for. Heels was a mistake, you had to walk from the Parking Lot to the Open Gigantic Doors of the Mountain! Not a short distance. Once inside we were whisked to the Entrance Elevator. I was allowed to see the Sleeping quarters, the Dining Areas, the Commisary, and the Base Exchange. I worked at that time as Secretary to the Director of the ADC AAFES - Army, Air Force, Exchange Service. My office supplied their Commisary, BX, etc. It was quite the memorable experience, I will never forget it! Proud Patroit, USAF VietNam Era Veteran.

I went to Cheyenne Mountain High School in the 80’s and NORAD was above and behind our school. This was the Cold War days and I remember often looking up there from the classroom windows and knowing that NORAD was one of the first targets on the Russian targeting list, and thinking that I wouldn’t feel a thing if it happened. They didn’t even bother with a fallout shelter or duck and cover drills at our school. It was pointless. What a crazy way to grow up.

@Pouty MacPotatohead If humanity continues down the path that we are currently taking, then I believe nuclear annihilation is inevitable.. China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, are about to face some of the toughest economic challenges in modern history.. The Corona virus pandemic decimated China's economy to the brink of collapse.. Now they are facing flooding of biblical proportions, and locust infestations capable of devouring thousands of acres of grain and rice over night.. Famine and disease will follow, and spread like wildfire.. Economic sanctions will prevent countries from sending aid.. Tens of millions of lives will be lost, an entire generation of people will cease to exist.. China will become desperate and start a war with the United States.. Russia, Iran, and North Korea, will back China, and join the campaign against the United States and it's allies.. Once their armies start to collapse, they will launch their nuclear arsenals in a last ditch effort to win the war.. Of course, that means we will retaliate by launching our nukes at them.. The next thing you know, badda bing, badda boom, the world as we know it will come to an end, and the small pockets of humanity that survive will be forced to live without the modern day technologies and medicines that we have become accustom to..

NORAD has the same effect on Sub-100 IQ Americans as the bright flowing robes worn by the Pope has on Catholics. Simpletons are dazzled by NORAD. And Greg you are incorrect-according to NORAD officials 9-11 was an excellent live fire test. If NORAD had been worth a tiny fraction of the hundreds of billions sunk into that piece of shit they would have been able to respond somehow. Results? A complete waste of resources. NORAD failed to protect the USA in any practical beneficial way. NORAD admitted exactly that one year after 9-11. Rest assured if a nuke is ever fired on this country NORAD will be standing around, scratching their heads, waiting for someone else to confirm what they see and ultimately doing nothing.

@@davidthomas4645 Of course you will. There isn't one ridiculous half trillion dollar military toy that you wouldn't support. You are dazzled by all the toys. So when anybody bombs the pentagon, blows up the white house, NORAD cannot help in any way? What is it broke or just useless? Unfortunately it will take WW III to find out which of us is right. Mr. Thomas I am sure you know more about all our trillion dollar bombers and bombs than I do. It's gotta be the hobby of all Star Trek fans-memorizing the Jane's military catalogue. Everything that pisses me off about all your precious trillion dollar toys was expressed in President Eisenhower's farewell speech. In which he warned of this country being taken over by defense contractors. Unfortunately like you no one was listening.

I worked in NORAD Air Defense Radar operations from July 1976 thru April 1980, at Luke AFB 26th Air Division/ NORAD Region, controlling interceptors in training missions and in actual alerts on aircraft entering US airspace without FAA flight plan data. In the late 1970's, Russia had 15 mega ton war heads targeted for major targets in the US such as, SAC headquarters in Omaha, Washington D. C. and others. The fireball from a bomb that size could reach a diameter of 200 miles. The crater could be as wide as 19 miles and a mile deep. Depending on the altitude the bomb exploded. That is from US intelligence reports then.

Fun fact. No interior shots of the movie were filmed inside NORAD. Only some exterior shots were used in the filming of the movie. The producers of the film did have one location that had an identical mission and capability as NORAD and decided it could be used, the former West German Government underground facility known as the "Government Bunker" or Ausweichsitz der Verfassungsorgane des Bundes im Krisen- und Verteidigungsfall zur Wahrung von deren Funktionstüchtigkeit (AdVB), located near Ahrweiler, southwest of Cologne / Koln. Part of this facility is now a museum and open to the public, the rest of the mountain tunnels and infrastructure was decommissioned in 2002. It's mission was the same as NORAD's during the Cold War and had the same survivability capabilities as Cheyenne mountain including Blast Doors (that you see in the film), full scale hospital and NATO Defense Operations. It also had dedicated infrastructure for the civilian federal government that used to be headquartered in Bonn, to be housed during an attack. It's an amazing time capsule that I visited several years ago.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if your super tightly sealed up infrastructure comes with an underground spring of fresh water conveniently already inside, can that not be contaminated from the outside? That water has to come from somewhere, right?
@fredsouza90888 жыл бұрын
+Lisette M. Water flows underneath ground everywhere and is filtered by the soil itself. There are rivers under soil, well not really rivers, more like sponge rocks that contains a lot of water. So pretty likely that spring doesn't touch the surface at all. Sorry for bad english, i'm a Brazillian engineer ;)

At least some of it probably comes from mountain snow runoff, if there was total nuclear war, during which Cheyenne Mountain would definitely sustain a direct strike on, then radiation would affect that snow water runoff. Some of it, maybe even most of it comes from underground aquifers though, which would be free from contaminants and radioactive particles for a while, but not indefinitely.
