Louise Farrenc: Symphony No. 1 (ROCO)

ROCO's Season 18 In Concert series wrapped up with a look toward our "Future," on April 29th at The Church of St. John the Divine!
In a program inspired by daring creativity and artistic innovation, conductor Michelle Merrill made her ROCO debut, leading the orchestra in the premiere of a ROCO-commissioned orchestral work by Juno award-winner Vivian Fung, Parade.
Louise Farrenc's fiery Symphony No. 1 also featured, with Igor Stravinsky's suite from the ballet Pulcinella, and Ludwig van Beethoven's Overture to the Creatures of Prometheus appropriately rounded out our 18th Season as we were joined by Houston's musical future: the Houston Youth Symphony!

What a pleasure it is to see and hear Louise Ferrenc's Symphony no.1 performed! I have long been an ardent admirer of her symphonic works. Conductor Michelle Merrill's is marvelous and does justice to this "fiery" piece of music. Also, hats off to Bend's recording technical director, for guiding the camera work in the making of this video. Joe Shinnick Brunswick, GA. Very nice performance of a beautiful piece! I am very active on Twitter, mostly politically, and as a kind of "recreation" I regularly post historical tweets - "This day in history" sort of tweets - etc. And today - May 31 - happens to be Louise Farranc's birthday! I haven't heard of her before, and even my classically trained mother hasn't. I'm all the happier to have discovered her. Together with her astonishing biography I shared this video with the Twitterverse. Great orchestra! Thank you again for that performance!
