I'm currently learning about oil clearance in between bearings at school, so if you guys could elaborate on that, I think that'd be great!

If you could do a vid on piston selection...and some of the differences i.e. cast, hypoeutectic, hypereutectic, and forged (4032 or 2618)..and maybe some ARP2000 and H11 decision stuff.thanks.

For hypo/hyper eutetic pistons see my post above. Cast is just the process (obiously) and the hypo/hyper eutetic refers to silicon content. The 2618 vs 4032 is aircraft grade aluminum vs automobile grade aluminum im fairly sure. Havent researched much about headstuds but a wise theory would be the amount of tq they are rated at.

As for rod bolts, if torqued down, and then removed..can you re-use the same.rod bolts or get a new set?

I bought rod cap bolts and tightened them to specs to check with plastiguage and then took them apart to install. Did I ruin my bolts because they may have stretched?

Hi my car is old and had to replace the crankshaft , so i ordered up all gaskets stretch bolts etc from Mercedes . When i got the parts only two conrod bolts came and was told there was no stock in uk and would come from manufacturer that could take 6 months . I have just put the engine together could just get 90 degrees on bolts . The car is only used for light use have i just built a time bomb . I hope in 6months i will fit the remaining bolts .

How do you use one on an aftermarket rod where the bolt doesnt protrude out the top of the big end of the rod. Someone figure that out. Bloodviking

I would be very interested if the guys of real street performance made a dvd or reportage of the way to build a complete engine, i m not a newbie in mecanic but i can t do the full step by myself to open a engine and rebuild it because i m affraid of the mistakes i can do and ruin everythings :-( i ll pay for rhis dvd ! Cheers!

What is the name / brand / model of the vice you are using to hold down the rod?

The instructions that come with the ARP stretch gauge describes a different way to use this tool. Firstly, it mentions preloading the tool to a certain amount and then zeroing the gauge. Then you should use a box end wrench and torque the fastener until you’ve reached proper stretch. Someone tell me I am wrong.

Yes, it's really cool when you find rod bolts or main bolts that are loose because they weren't stretched properly!!

With the rods mounted on the crankshaft, I used a torque wrench to incrementally tighten the first two rod bolts. I measured the stretch and it is proper and I noted the torque needed to get there. Can I rely on torqueing the remaining bolts to this setting to achieve the desired stretch or do I have to go through the agony of using the stretch gauge 14 more times? ARP bolts with assembly lube if it matters.

Craig, hypo and hypereutetic pistons have an abnormal amount of silicon in them. Hyper obviously has more silicon than normal pistons, making them expand more when warmed up vs hypoeutetic pistons. % content usually varies but is within a set range to be classified as such.

Great instructional video. Just a couple of questions; Doesn't a set of rod bolts have different static lengths? Do you recommend zero'ing out the rod bolt stretch gauge for each one of them and measuring out the stretch? Or finding out the shortest one and just measuring out the co-efficient for the other ones and adding the specified amount of stretch needed?

If you arent trying to make 1200+ hp out of a 3 liter engine like these guys, you dont need to check the bolt stretch like this video showed. Just torque the bolts to the recommended spec with a good torque wrench. Unless your bolts require being degreed. LS engines do. You need a degree wheel for that.

What kind of torque wrench is that?
@imJGott9 жыл бұрын
it look like a snap on, but you dont need get that one exactly for day to day use in your garage.
@spartan10719 жыл бұрын
i'm JGott I own a shop where the snap on guy never comes. Most of my tools are mac and craftsman because I'm out in the woods but all I do is build engines and transmissions.
@imJGott9 жыл бұрын
spartan1071 ahh, i see the need in quality parts. i thought you may have been a garage builder like myself. snap on is great but can be overkill for an average builder like myself.

i'm JGott I have a clicker style torque wrench and digital but I liked the fact that it was swivel and longer than anything I have. I personally don't care if it is digital because pressure torque sensitive wrenches are more accurate.
@imJGott9 жыл бұрын
spartan1071 I have a digital brown line torque wrench and I'm going back to clicker style. I think there better and little more accurate and you don't have to worry about batteries. I've seen badass digital wrenches at my work but they're like 3k and up.
