ROD KNOCK? Blowing Up Volkswagen 2.0L EA888 Engine Just To Tear It Down!

Today is something different! Have you ever wondered what was happening when an engine let go? We have torn down a ton of catastrophic failure engines on this channel but we have only speculated what was happening when it failed.
UNTIL NOW!
I bought this 2013 VW CC from a tow lot after it was abandoned. This car has the CBFA 2.0L Turbo EA888 engine and once I was able to get it to start, it immediately had rod knock. This car was clearly suffering from oil pressure issues as we found a new oil pump and fresh oil in the trunk.
Unfortunately, when these engines have gotten that far, the sellable components out of them like the cylinder head, have already been damaged from lack of lubrication and bearing material circulating in the oiling system.
So, instead of this car being a giant L for having a bad engine, I decided to make a video of its final moments and give it a proper send off at over 100mph.
Then, in just a few days you can catch the teardown of this engine! Its the best before and after, or wait, maybe the worst? This was a spur of the moment decision and thats likely why this video may have a slightly different feel from most of my content.
We then dismantled the car and saved all of the sellable components before crushing the car and selling the chassis for scrap.
I know not everyone will love this video, but its also something I can't and won't be able to do that often.

I did just that. 69 Chevelle 350. Rod disintegrated and the piston slammed into and wedged itself at the top of the cylinder. It took a block of wood and 5lb hand sledge to knock it out, the buyer of the car told me. He gave me the piston top and I used it as an ashtray for quite a while.

In 1979 I was walking down a street in Liverpool UK where a man was having some difficulty starting his Hillman Hunter on an icy cold morning. When it eventually started, it did not knock, but he chose to 'warm it up' by flooring the throttle which took the engine up to a large number of rpm, limited only by the terrible inlet and exhaust manifolds which shared the same side of the cast-iron 1725 cc (105 cu inch) 4 cylinder ohv engine. After about 45 seconds of this abuse it came apart magnificently and sufficiently completely to briefly stop the traffic with a monumental cloud of oil smoke. Other than that I have only heard such sounds at the race track! A splendid piece of scientific research Eric , thanks!

What can happen is because the oil is cold and therefore more viscous, the oil pressure relief valve can't pass enough oil to keep the pressure within safe limits. The oil pressure goes sky high and the oil pump drive shears under the strain, so the pressure goes from sky high to zero. Won't take long too long to go bang after that...

Terminally damaged the engine of a Scania SBA111, 6 cylinder 11 litre diesel engine, during my army service back in the mid 90's. Poor truck had been put away still wet after a power wash and temps dropped into freezing overnight. On cranking it the next morning full right foot was applied and once it started the throttle linkage stuck wide open. Yanking on the stop handle, did nothing as that linkage has frozen aswell. Diesels really don't like going from sleeping at 10 degrees below freezing to redline rpm's for the 10 or so minutes it took us to tilt the cab forwards and manually block the air intake to shut the engine down!

@@Titan604 Also the pistons are slightly too small for the bores and will rock a little bit. Not an issue at idle or low rpm but will score the cylinders quickly at high rpm especially with very little oil. I had a Suburban that had piston slap when it was cold and it went away after a minute or so.

I'm a car guy, but even so on my '11 a3 ea888 cbfa I change my oil religiously at 3-4k miles with the full synthetic Castrol they recommend haha, just to make myself feel better haha. Now I get to figure out low compression idle misfire on cyl 2 🫠. Super fun car to drive, a nightmare to maintain

My uncle was a master ford mechanic before retiring with over 40yrs, he was telling me about the cash for clunkers era, and what they did to those poor souls, at a dealership, he had a good time blowing up some of them. As a kid I grew up where the GM plant is now in Wentzville, one of the farms was our playground with a big ditch, everyone threw old lawnmowers in, we would make a little pocket money, fixing them up with parts maybe another had, the ones that where Cat4, we got running and took the gov linkage off, tied a long string to the throttle shaft, hid behind a tree, and then do a autopsy when they come apart, before going to the scrap pile for recycle. Fun times they sounded just like that before, BOOM.. Dad just shook his head at us, but , at least we where learning how things worked. I was going to mention a couple times this very video you made, probably NOT very many people have heard a engine self destruct..

It is quite a sound. I had a '68 Chevy half ton with the 307 engine. It burned oil on three of the eight cylinders. It would take me to and from work Monday through Thursday, then to work and three or four miles from there, where I could stop and put two quarts of the cheap stuff in it. I figured I was getting about 80 miles a quart. Well, one Friday afternoon I was headed back home. I had used the truck over the weekend but didn't think anything of it, but I should have. I stopped at the traffic light on the corner where the service station I bought my two quarts of oil at every week was. Then I heard it. "ticticticticTAKTAKTAKTAK!" and the engine stopped. One of the rods stepped out for a little fresh air, I guess, and that was the end of that engine.

Holy rod knock, Batman! I blew inspection holes into a 97 Land Rover Discovery with a 4.7 Gems engine at freeway speeds (~75mph). It was surprisingly quiet when it did the deed and put a hole in both sides of the block, however I did hose down the hoser camping the left lane. I was just accelerating then a quiet pop and I had a spy-level smoke screen of oil and a dead engine. The tow home was super fun as the transfer case slipped out of neutral when we were 2-wheel towing it and getting back onto the freeway in the opposite direction. I left a good 100' of skid marks from the rear tires. I did get it home and put a 76k mile, used engine in, that cost as much as the truck did when I bought it at 106k. I will never touch another JLR with any of my money, even if they weren't owned by Tata. Also, you know it's bad when your manufacturer's workforce in China, of all places, demonstrates on the street over poor quality standards.

I bought a '12 CC from auction, in "Run and Drive" condition. I had it home only a short time when it slipped timming, trashing the valves. Fortunately, I have a '11 Jetta TDI that the chassis is too damaged for a rebuilt title. Hopefully, I can built one of the few TDI CCs in the country.

That would be a cool project. Hopefully things are close enough between the platforms where you don't run into issues with the CC CAN bus devices getting the wrong/no responses from the Jetta ECU, I know some brands are horrible for inter-compatibility.

@@abpsd73 Probably will be snags along the road. The CC is push to start, the TDI is key start. The TDI ECU will almost certainly need to be immobizer deleted. Physical move will be first, and propably the simplist.

While not wanting you to take too much financial risk, I'd love to see this occasionally for the context and understanding. Maybe we can see different failure modes in the future? Lost rod in #6 piston, 1968 327 camel hump heads. Sounded like a large pop can getting crushed at 120 mph. Pulled piston out, cleaned it up, left rockers and push rods out of #6, ran like a champ. just sounded weird. Then I went into the service. The Malibu was never seen again.

Fun fact: The oil pressure light / warning in VWs since ~1999 is not active at idle! The instrument panel only looks at the sensor above 2000 rpm. On the Mk3 and Mk2s there are 2 oil pressure switches, one that closes at like 5 psi that's used at idle, and on that closes at some higher psi that's used above 2000 rpm. On the Mk4s they simply deleted the idle oil pressure switch. Yes, even the V10 TDI, with its FIFTEEN fuel pumps, two ECUs, two batteries... has one oil pressure switch that's ignored at idle.

I think you are mistaken, oil pressure warning will come on at idle with the AE888 , but I did notice it was not on in the video, may have had one bad rod bearing but enough oil pressure. I’ve had a lot of experience with these motors and have seen oil warning at idle.

I watched this video twice and one thing I didn't see at any point (before, during, and after cranking when it stalled, when it was running, before it exploded, after it exploded) was an oil pressure light. Apparently it doesn't have a typical light - the "Volkswagen Information System" is supposed to produce a happy little message at some point, but it never did here. Oh it cried about the brakes needing service, and to put the gearbox in P after it stalled (which is bad advice if the wheels are still spinning), but never said anything about low oil pressure or the fact that THE ENGINE JUST EXPLODED.

VW doesn't have an oil pressure sensor that reads oil pressure. Its got dummy switches right by the oil filter housing: a normal pressure switch and low pressure switch for a self-regulating oil pump. F378 (0.7 bar) reduced pressure and F22 (2.55 bar) oil pressure sit on the oil filter housing, which are monitored by J519 Power Supply Module and sent to J623 Engine Module. If one of the switches isn't closed, ECU sends message to Instrument Cluster Module J285. So pretty fool-proof that it wouldn't activate. Even if a sensor was bad, it wouldn't close and would trigger the oil pressure warning and store a "Short to ground" code in the module. They topped it up with oil so that's probably why there wasn't a low oil pressure readout. Whats surprising though is that these engines have electronic oil level sensors. Once it gets 1L below the right amount of oil (4.6L) it will give a warning to add 1L of oil to the engine. Owner must've ignored this msg constantly for it to get this bad.

Can confirm. At 46k miles mine left an enormous puddle of what looked, felt, and for the most part smelled like maple syrup on my garage floor. And I was told this would happen “between 40 and 50 thousand miles” by someone three days after I bought it.

Yep!!! I’ve been there!! My cousin ran a salvage yard, we would often take car/ motors just like that, for a drive!! Always stayed close to the yard. We knew 1 of us would be walking to get the wrecker. Great fun!!! Learning how not to treat an automobile!! And why. Great fun!!

Loved it! I used to have a Jetta with the 2.0 engine it. It was a habitual oil burner, 1 quart per 3000 miles. It was quite gratifying to hear that mill blow up.

I'm glad this sacrifice was made. Many times Eric has commented that the noise coming from an engine as it's coming apart is not something you can miss. I've heard this sound more than once in my life, thankfully not in any of my cars. But its more than just the sound, there's the smell of burnt oil, and coolant. The sensation that the engine isn't producing power. Smoke pouring out the tailpipe, and that infernal knocking.

I used to work at a VW dealership and can confirm people coming in with vehicles with very low oil/the oil light on. OMG, I could tell ya stories! Was a daily occurance that could have been avoided if people would just check their oil once in a blue moon! Now the VW engine that just won't die, even with low oil, is the non-turbo 2.0L engine. You know, the one with only 115HP that they put in the Gol/Jetta/Beetle. I swear you could fill that sump with sandpaper and day old coffee and it will still keep going.

those 2.0s & 1.8 go to 315k, then need decarbonizing. Or just grab another from Pikn'Pull. Got my last one for $96. Like fifteen years ago. Think I'm at 541k or 601k miles now, I go by the O2 sensor box, fires the check O2 light every 60k miles. lol. VW. Not what they used to be.

I'm not one who enjoys destruction for the sake of destruction, but even I agree with you 100% -- very different and interesting video, nothing of value was lost, and VERY much looking forward to the teardown. When you first mentioned the transmission, I got excited -- I'd LOVE to see a DSG teardown. (Used to own one, loved it, great transmission.) But it sounds like the transmission is good, so that would run counter to salvaging good parts to fix other cars. Hopefully someday you get a bad DSG and we get a teardown video of it.

We had a 1974 Chevy pickup with a 350 that was knocking, smoking and using oil with 200,000 miles on it. We decided to scrap it so we tried to blow it up first by putting a brick on the accelerator pedal. We watched it run wide open for 20 minutes before leaving it to blow up. We came back later and found that it ran out of gas but it still cranked over and started with some starting fluid.

I had an engine blow on my way to work once way back in 1992 or 93. It was a high mileage (345,000 km) 1986 Chevy Cavalier 2L wagon I bought used from the company I worked at. Ex fleet jalopy I paid $900 for. One morning while driving on the freeway to work the engine started making a pinging/knocking sound while I was driving. It quickly grew into a very loud noise then a BOOM. I was in live traffic with no place to pull over on that stretch of the freeway. I floored it and it could only maintain about 35 MPH in a 60 zone. I put the 4 way flashers on, I finally saw a break in traffic, quickly went to the shoulder. Engine was siezed now and wouldn't crank. Oil was full and uncontaminated as far as the dipstick showed. Tow truck pulled up, the guy couldn't budge the crankshaft even with a 6 foot Johnson bar. We figure the oil pump must have failed and this blew the engine. Luckily I knew a guy who owned a junkyard. A tow and $400 later for a used engine and the jalopy was back on the road.
