Night Gallery never got the critical respect it deserved...after all, Twilight Zone would be a tough act to follow in any case, and Rod Serling himself protested against an overemphasis on in-your-face horror with little subtlety...but many of the scripts (some by RS) were top-notch writing, and there was still plenty of "cerebral" TZ-like stories, and just the paintings alone were worth seeing. This was one of the shows we'd talk about at school the next day.

Yeah. Wasn't as si-fi as the TZ was. In fact I wish there was more on NG. The one episode I remember was an astronaut on the moon and his predicament that was really suspenseful up until the very last shot was The Nature of the Enemy. It was only 5 minutes long and wish it was longer and had explored the theme more. Wish there were more astronaut episodes on NG. Alas.

This show, the theme music, everything about it scared the hell out of me as a kid.

My relatives are from the same city where he is from. We moved to MA when I was a baby. My mother was acquainted with him when she was a teen & he was a young adult. It's super cool that "Night Gallery", one of the best tv shows of all time, has a connection to my family!

Rod Serling's follow-up series of "Night Gallery" would have been the equal of "The Twilight Zone" if it hadn't been for the interference of producer Jack Laird. He undermined Serling's position as a writer of drama.

VERY under rated show. I'll never forget the episode with Richard Thomas/Geraldine Page -- called "The Sin Eaters", I believe?? That episode gave me nightmares throughout my childhood!!

Nightmares what the fuck? That episode was hilarious, especially the part where they lady just threw the money at him as he ran out of the door.

If they only made a new version of Night Gallery for TV, i'd definitely watch it! Sadly, the only horror you get on TV is...GLEE!!!

I hope they never do. I was looking forward to the Twilight Zone remake so much, and it was atrocious. Perhaps a remake might boost the popularity of the original, but I would rather they leave this gem alone, only for the eyes which seek it to admire.

If you're a fan of Rod Serling, you have to checkout the NG since Rod himself not only hosts the show but also was the writer for many of the episodes. I did read however that Rod had a problem with the direction of the show at some point. It's nice to see that season 3 finally was released. For its syndication release, The Sixth Sense was edited and included with Night Gallery.. Haven't heard anything yet about a release for "The Sixth Sense" now that all 3 season of NG have been released.

Wow Rod Sterling still got it 10 years later on a different show. Should check them out. Saw a Simpsons Halloween parody of this with Bart hosting and I think a Tiny Tunes episode too.

Serling didn't have as much control over this show as he did with TZ, he probably did NG for the money in the hopes that if it was successful he'd eventually get the same kind of control he had with TZ but it didn't stay on as long and by the time it ended in '73 he really felt burned out.

Nicotine, caffeine, alcohol and stress... Rod ingested all these drugs as if they were food and shelter. Coupled along with veteran war combat horrors and a history of heart failure in his family, the man lived a relatively short life and ceased in existence relatively early.

I heard that he drank more than 1 liter of black coffee per day and smoke 2 packs a day...it's too sad not see what he would be and do in the eighties and probably in the nineties...

"And the thing about it is...this was very scary and creepy for 1968 network television. Today in 2020 there is nothing on television like this...only tons of 'psycho slasher' gore films that are ultimately not scary or thought-provoking but rather disturbing and sick'."

Extremely underrated. Anything with that Serling voice, too--wow. I'll bet this series steered millions of people toward the horror/sf genres and started them reading. Bet it also got a ton of people interested in painting, and art in general. Such was his genius, even when Serling 'failed,' he succeeded.

@MZVIRB There were more episodes in season 3 than in season 1.. Season 1 DVD boxset did take some episodes from season 3, so they can make up for it by adding some new bonus features on a season 3 release.. My guess is a complete series boxset release of The Night Gallery now that the final season of the Zone has been released on Blu, maybe Night Gallery will get a Blu-Ray release too. Check out one of my other uploads for possible bonus on a season 3.. goto- NIGHT GALLERY - An Inside Look! #1

@lstevens35 It's an amazing show and has alot of fans, which makes me wonder why season 3 was never released? In the mean time, The Twilight Zone is now being released in a super deluxe blu-ray season by season set. Checkout the bonus extras it comes with, you'll really be amazed!!!

I just got reading a few of Serling's stories for season 1. I'm a big fan of his work and The Twilight Zone, so I'm going to have to check out some the older series episodes of The Night Gallery.

There was an episode I seen when I was 6 years old. I can't remember the plot, but it was a couple who was drowned? And had returned and walked the beach at night and they was glow in the dark silver color..Very scary..Know that one?

I wonder if someone can help, in the early 70;s there was a tv show- supsence, drama horror and the opening segment always ended with a house and it had crooked shutters...that is all i can remember...does anyone know the name of the series? Thanks in advance..

Sounds like “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour” opening sequence ( 1962-1965 ) with Hitchcock’s familiar shadow appearing on the front door, of the old house ( possibly the “Psycho” house ), followed by his customary droll greeting, “Good Evening” 😮😳💀
