Malcolm Wyatt Hello Malcolm again. I did not sail with the Port line ships ,but saw many of them around New Zealand. I was with Shaw Savill on the Aussie/N.Z. Run. Then Donaldson of Glasgow and the Clan Line. I come from Aberdeen but live in Australia.

An old utube I know. My dad served on the first Port Chalmers from’43 to ‘45 working up to 3rd engineer. He said she was the best of all the ships he had been on. He always said good things about the Port line.

Kid passenger on Union Castle ships late 50's. First glimpse here of these fine Port ships (similar livery), raised hopes that the old, even then, MV Warwick Castle would sail into view. At school in Durban, dreamed of sailor life. 11 years of RN followed.

Good man, I was lucky enough to sail as junior engineer on the SA VAAL in 1974, all these beautiful ships were gone a couple of years later. Feel I was blessed to get at least a few years of absolute working bliss. Bill Fogarty

Just found this one. I was apprentice and Third Mate BP Tankers 1966-1972. Did the first OND Nautical Science at South Shields Marine and Tech College where we had a Port Line engineering apprentice in our hostel, Winterbottom Hall, if memory serves me his surname was Beavis. Port Line was one of the companies we all knew as being up there with the cream of the liner companies. Lovely collection, well done. All the Best.

This video left me in tears. Thanks for sharing. Dad went to sea as a cadet with Port Line in 1958. Recently I've been increasingly wondering what that must have been like. I always imagined it was like a 'boys own adventure'. We grew up with photo's of Port Line on on our lounge room walls and Port Lyttleton's bell hanging from a rafter in our lounge room. These ships were being scrapped around the time we were born, but my memories of childhood include going to work with Dad on a tug in Walvis Bay, sailings on ships he was piloting from one port and into another in Tasmania. Learning to go climb down ladders backwards, being stuffed full of ice cream by ships cooks and that unmistakable smell only ships have - Diesel and Salt? I've always felt very privileged by this knowing that it was something other children would never have the chance to do . I doubt any are able to these days.

I worked for Blue Star Line in London when they merged with Port Line. The Port Line guys felt they were superior to us but we got along quite well. A.C.T. gradually took over with their large container ships and it was the end of shipping as it had been for many years.

Our family returned home, New York - New Zealand in 1955 on the Port Wyndham and cherish the memory. I had my own cabin overlooking the forward hatches. That the Port Wyndham was there at all was was very fortunate having survived a torpedo hit in the on the starboard side bow at war's end. I remember the picture of it on board. They rigged a swimming pool and a picture screen stern of the funnel, where we watched a B/W movie and listened to the noise the engines made. Many have mentioned the beauty of these bygone vessels, to which I agree. Most ships today look like top heavy barges. I have a picture of the Port Chalmers in Timaru harbor and one of the Port Alma taken by the skipper in Lyttelton simply to answer my request for one. A very kind gesture I must say. Thank you Malcolm for you collection of fine pictures.

Served engineer cadetship with Cunard group at South Shields 1972 -76. Was a cadet on Port Chalmers. Did the coast as junior on PNP , (lots of night shifts in Liverpool, KG5 and Sheer ness.). Did two trips on the Alfred doing South America Middle East run. Was on her when she was converted to Indian crew and renamed Masirah. Great times, remembering the old chiefs, Charlie Clements, Percy Pike, Ken Mackenzie.

I bought a villa in Spain back in 2014 and due to Covid shackles, I've been here for the past 12 months. I remember the photo mentioned. We were standing close to the railings port side aft well deck. If you should come across that photo again, I sure would love to have a copy. In 1997 I met up with Roger Williams and kept in touch for a few years. Visited Roger Webber who, like Roger, has been unlucky healthwise. I had a brief telephone call with Jim Cowie in 2002 whilst I was in Aberdeen on a ship. Also spoke with 'PG' Rod and Bill Whelan, both doing well last heard. Wonderful beautiful ships, I can remember seeing the Port Melbourne alongside the Canada Dock wall, Liverpool, in 1963, when I had a Saturday morning visit to Mac Andrews Pinto. Dad was chief engineer, on the Pinto. Astern would be a Strick or City ship, next branch a NZSC or Federal ship. A son of a Port Line man told me his dad's ships crew, made a trawl net . As with a trawler they would trail the net astern and hauled the net and the fresh catch aboard. However, the whole of the crew were involved; the skipper, chief engineer etc. This took skill and if the net had snagged the prop (s), the whole crew would have been sacked. When I was told the tale, I roared with laughter. It could have only happened in the MN. What was the motive?

Went to sea 78 all the port line ships bar a few were all gone great runs down to Aussie & Kiwi all the fond memories of the good old times. If the ships could tell stories and write books they would be best sellers 😂😂🇬🇧🇬🇧

I remember seeing all those fine vessels in my school days, and got down in the engine rooms of some with my dad who worked for A&G Price in Auckland. I remember particularly the Vindex that served in WWII as a escort carrier and was converted back to conventional configuration when the war ended

Port Line Ships 6,605 views 3 years ago Port Line Ships from across the world now in HD+3D A tribute to all who served Port Line over the years is particularly warmly given. They produced really beautiful looking ships, operated them immaculately and were, at all times, proudly in the forefront of technical development. A great name with a great tradition so sadly missed

Malcolm Wyatt Hello Malcolm My Father Ray Jenkins who passed away in 2010 was a former Port Line Master and as a child I had many happy times visiting and at times sailing(UK Coast) on these great ships. I remember being on board Port Auckland, Port Launceston, Port Chalmers, Port Nicholson and my favourite Port New Plymouth. I have found a number of fantastic photos via the internet however really struggle to find any video, we didnt have a camera back then so have no photos either . I did remember years ago Port Chalmers being in a fire safety video which ended up with the vessel arriving in Curacao. I would love to see that again. If you have any suggestions on any Port Line ships I would really appreciate it. I did buy my dad a copy of the Ports & Bens vidio by Snowbow. Many Thanks Nick Jenkins

Hi Malcolm, I did a couple of trips as a cabin boy out of Cardiff on a tanker called Regent Caribou. Came back and tried to get an apprenticeship in Cardiff docks which might have enabled me to go back as an engineer, but had to be a Roman Catholic, can you believe? I spent all my spare time in the engine room really loved it. Anyway that was the end of my very short career in the MN.

Hi Rob It’s a pity that you never joined Port Line it’s the best company that I have ever sailed with we have over 600 Members worldwide that is part of the Yahoo Groups, by the time I was 24 years old I had gone around the world 4 times going through the Suez Canal and back through the Panama Canal, I find it a bit hard to believe that you had to be a Roman Catholic to have an apprenticeship, religion should not have come into the equation, well that was their loss, I have also sailed on Oil Tankers and that was the Bideford and the Bradford from Milford haven Malcolm

Nice old ships with healthy crew sizes, the good old days. Modern ships look like sheeet to me, in contrast to those old beauties. Too bad its all past now. The "future" where people talk about Drone ships/unmanned ships, minimum crew ships, does not apeal to me at all...Thanks for posting, Regards from Alaska!
