I cried so many times while listening to this song after my first love told me it was over, June 1984. It's June 2021 and I still feel that pain. The years have dulled the pain, but my heart never recovered fully. I did love again, but not like I did the first time and I'm sorry I've been too weak over the years to fully give my partners all they deserved.

Watching this video takes me right back to 1976, coming home from babysitting and turning on "Don Kirchner's Rock Concert" to see one of my favorite singers ever in this pre-recorded video and having my mind blown at its beauty- in every way- Stewart's voice, the lyrics, his clothes, the garden. There was no way to "re-wind" back then, but I was hooked on the song and went out as soon as I could to buy "A Night on the Town" the album that had the song.

Mandolin Wind is overlooked and is right up there with Maggie Mae for me. In HS I was driving home after school a Beautiful High School Ceerleader named Jan Horn. I sang out to her on cue.."The coldest winter in almost 13 years and you Never, Never changed you mind, and I love you, Baby I love ❤️ you woo hoo 🎶 " and Jan thought it was the sweetest thing anyone ever did for her, spontaneous 💖

Rod Stewart’s version is the one that maintains the hurt and vulnerability throughout the song, and that’s what makes it so unforgettable. Other versions lose it after the first verse or never have it at all. Sheryl Crowe sounds like she is just making excuses to let a guys down easy, not someone recalling pain.

The First Cut Is the Deepest I would have given you all of my heart But there's someone who's torn it apart And she's taken just all that I had But if you want, I'll try to love again Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know The first cut is the deepest Baby, I know, the first cut is the deepest When it come to being lucky, she's cursed When it come to loving me, she's worst I still want you by my side Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried And I'm sure gonna give you a try And if you want, I'll try to love again Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know The first cut is the deepest Baby, I know, the first cut is the deepest And when it come to being lucky, she's cursed When it come to loving me, she's worst I still want you by my side Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried But I'm sure gonna give you a try 'Cause if you want, I'll try to love again Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know Whoo! It's not about drug addiction. It's about a person wondering if and how it is possible to love again after their first love is lost.
@felixfranzen7318
@felixfranzen7318 3 ай бұрын
@@garybradley1 Yes, it is. The drug imagery is fairly obvious. But some people just don't understand metaphors and double meanings. For instance, for most people Moby Dick is an allegory about the perils of blind ambition and revenge. For others it's just about a guy chasing a whale. We can at least agree that it's a great song.
@garybradley1
@garybradley1 3 ай бұрын

@@garybradley1 Well, I could be wrong. But then again, artists usually say that, especially about songs than could have a controversial meaning. In any case, that's the beauty of art. It can mean different things to different people, even things the artist didn't intend or consciously meant when writing it. To me it's about how you never can replicate the euphoria of that first high (the first cut), no matter how hard you try. How it is to love something you know is bad for you. How drugs sometimes can help det your tears when you're feeling sad. Perhaps by making you feel comfortably numb (to quote another artist). Oh, and a funny thing. Melville actually once said that Moby Dick in fact is about a guy chasing a whale and nothing else. It is however widely believed that he was just fed up with journalists constantly asking him about the true meaning of the book. Also, sorry if I sounded condescending in my first comment. Didn't mean to.
@garybradley1
@garybradley1 3 ай бұрын
@felixfranzen7318 No problem. I have never touched drugs, so from that point of view, it would mean nothing to me. Take care, and stay safe. ps I've just found something on the internet that points to the song being (as you pointed out) about drug use.........so who knows? I guess the jury is out.

I realised I was no longer the innocent boy I was in 2015. I had a lot to change. And that change started yesterday. Thanks for the many experiences here in the chat. I only had one breakup and at 17 you don't know what love really is. My wife and I have been married for 43 years now. Only death can separate us. As you get older, you understand true, deep love as solidarity in all situations, when children are growing up, when they separate at work, when they are sick... I am no longer afraid of anything, becoming a survivor. Then my heart breaks in two...

Rod's is the only one that "sounds" right to me... But so many of Cat's songs I enjoy so much, even ones that never got radio play! @ssfifty - I HAVE heard the original, by Cat Stevens, that was the point of my post. WHEN I heard it, it didn't sound "right" to me, because I had grown up listening to Rod's version & consequently, like it better. Possibly, it is ONLY because it is what I am used to (like Momma's cooking vs. a noted chef's of a certain dish 🤷‍♀️). Nothing against Cat, because I LOVE his music & listen to much of it, full albums, even the songs that never got radio play are among my favorites... but for "The First Cut Is the Deepest", I MUCH prefer Rod's soulful rendition. People do not have to agree, it doesn't ruin either artist or either version of the song. 😊
