Amazing when Rod sang this for the Battle of Britain concert at the Royal Albert Hall last year. it moved me to tears then as his story of his family reminded me of my own father who is at least 10 years older, but was 6 when WWII began and 12 when it ended. He lived in the East End of London that was badly hit during the war. I remember eating everything on my plate because it was wasteful to leave anything. Don't grumble. And being taken through parts of London that was still ravaged and black from the war. I am 60 next year. My father went into National Service and came out as a cockney accented much awarded Brigadier ADC CBE DL - for those in the know. He loves his cockney roots and still does an amazing amount of charity work - for the injured and maimed by unnecessary wars!! SSAFA, BRITISH LEGION a

My Mum was born and raised in Liverpool and went through "The Blitz" as a girl. She came to the States at 21 years old not knowing a soul and made a life here. I went to Liverpool back in the early 1970's with her and could NOT believe my eyes seeing that the city still looked like a war zone. I can't imagine how she struggled with no heat, electricity, hot water, having to use an outhouse for a toilet, running under the table when the sirens went off, not knowing if your house was next to be bombed, etc..... She's now 86 and has total dementia and in a nursing home, it's beyond sad. However, before she had her stroke and got dementia, I was able to play this song for her and of course, bought her to tears..... This song means A LOT to me! God Bless you Sir Rod!

In my opinion I believe that it is only living through horrific times such as the depression 🌎 world war II and then the rebuilding of Europe and the lack of money and food that so many people on this earth did not have that makes the older generation💯 were so grateful and appreciative of what they have today 💯 Unfortunately the younger generation has not gone through any kind of ordeal as the older folks had. Going without💯 not having enough food 🙏losing family because you didn't have money for medicine really makes those folks appreciate and be grateful for what you do have🌎. These kids today have no clue about that. They are given everything as if they're entitled to it. We are just like Rod where we had to learn if you wanted something you had to get up off your butt and you had to work really hard for it. I don't think there's another musician out there that worked as hard to put his music out there and to express what was in his heart and his mind than Rod🌹. This song sums it all up he was part of that generation because his father In all likelihood was part of that time in history 🌎 Rod too learned the hard way That life wasn't easy and you have to make life what you want it to be🌎🙏 We all know it wasn't easy but Rod succeeded 💯💖💯
