Percy Grainger's music always makes me cheerful. This wonderful Chandos set of his music has been a constant source of delight to me. Richard Hickox is so badly missed

Ahh, Irish Tune from County Derry never gets old. Such a gorgeous arrangement of a beautiful tune.

Percy Grainger was a genius at arranging whether it was for symphony orchestra, concert band or piano. Very unique and original instrumentation. A case in point is Lincolnshire Posy.

I love all Grainger's work. His folk song arrangements are nothing short of sublime. 'Shallow Brown' is miraculous. And what is so wonderful in PG's music is that there is so much counterpoint. I often don't hear it at first because the upper lines are so attractive or catchy. Grainger is sadly underrated as a composer. People know 'country gardens' and that's it. And what wonderful orchestration - the critics keep on about Rimsky or Ravel's orchestration but Graingers is up there with (or even above) these. As I said at the start, I love his work. It makes me feel happy.

Loved playing his works when I attended UOP in Stockton,CA wayyyyy back in the 70’s. Listening to this takes me back to when I could REALLY play. I love the KZbin videos that show the score…🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

This tendency to hold on to successful tunes is not a bad thing. People sit for hours in sessions with squeeze boxes, fiddles, guitars, elbow pipes and all manner of whistles, playing basically the same jigs and reels with nuances and variations. Then we have Philip Glass!!! Percy is really superb and up there with the best.

I love Grainger's quirkiness. I suppose his reputation as a maverick and his sexual peccadilloes (see the John Bird biography of the composer) have overshadowed his remarkable and varied contributions to music. I always think of David Collings's performance as Grainger in Ken Russell's Delius biopic, "A Song Of Summer", as well. The centenary edition is stunning, thanks to Chandos. This suite is delightful! Good upload...

I would say that Mr. Grainger's sexual practices, performed with a consenting wife, are fairly common among people who have any fetishes. Maybe it was snickered at a century ago, or even in 1950, but it's common knowledge. Granted he was a very fervent practitioner, but what of it?

while it wouldn't be correct to say that grainger wrote "the same work" many times over, he did adapt several of his works more than once and this may lead to such an impression. shepherd's hey! alone has four different versions.

This was to give more ensembles an opportunity to perform his works; often rearranging sections to enhance the color of sound for that specific group. This by no means indicates he didn't write an incredible amount of original compositions.
