In this video I discuss my first impressions of the Rode NT USB microphone. The Rode NT USB is a USB condenser microphone by Rode which plugs right into your computer - no need for an audio interface. The Rode NT USB is good for recording vocals, musical instruments, a voiceover, or a podcast. The NT USB comes with a tripod base, mic stand mount, pop filter, USB cable, and a padded carrying case. It’s compatible with Mac OS X, Windows 8, and iOS. I talk about my favorite things about the Rode NT USB as well as some issues with it. Is it as good as the XLR? Your ears will have to decide, but I offer some opinions as well.

That first con doesn’t make too much sense. Considering you have an audio interface, you’re not the demographic for this microphone. That would be like you going “For me to ride my motorcycle, I had to exit my car and get onto the bike. This was inconvenient, as I was already in my car.”
@AleWestQ
@AleWestQ 4 жыл бұрын
Thought the same. Plus it's super normal to adjust the buffer size on a lot of Audio programs just to avoid the delay. Hence why many other programs do have a delay rectification feature. As far as I saw, there was no negative points lol.

I just compared the NT1 usb mic to an sm 58 and a CAD E100. My daughter sang to a track...16 bars...rhythmic and soft vocals. I wanted to check for any delays as you mentioned to how a take shows up on the daw. We used LOGIC. Happy to say that there was ZERO latency with the USB mic. All the mics performances were completely lined up in Logic. The mic was plug and play and connected automatically with an acceptance question. So, zero delay in our experiment. Cheers.

Your cons really aren't cons, there just small things that take a few seconds but on another note it's always been recommended that when recording vocals, that lowering your buffer reduces latency (professional engineers say this also) plus I thought there were buffer settings on the mic, i must be mistaken

Hey bro. Most if not all usb condenser mics have an latency issue. Adjusting buffer size helps incredibly. But you might have to line up the recording with the track because of the latency due to the length Of the usb cable being the longer it is the longer it takes for the data to go from your cardioid to the processor then to the cable to your computer. Hope I helped. Thanks for the video.

I've used Rode USB (for over four years) to record my singing vocals... acapella...with an instrument and a backing track ...I find it a very good microphone. I don't think that U.S.B. microphones (no matter what make) are made to be used with an audio interface...(XLR yes...but USB no). Also with all these USB microphone recordings you need to do some post editing to get the sound you want. I use a free program called Audacity to record and edit. Did you know you can use this microphone also to record audio directly to your phone...much much better that the internal phone microphone.

Hey, do you know if the Rhode mic also works for recording voice audio in a room with a distance between 1 and 2 meters? To record a yoga video for example?
@SanjayC
@SanjayC 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried it, but with most condenser mics, you should try to be around 15 centimeters from the mic. If you place it 1-2 meters, it will pick up A LOT more of the room noise. I wouldn't recommend doing that.

Sanjay C hm ok that makes sense 🙈 thank you for replying! Maybe I should go for a shotgun mic instead then...

NHaezer Was the delay because he didn’t record while monitoring from the mics headphone output...which is needed to avoid latency in recording.

What about if you create an aggregate device?
@SanjayC
@SanjayC 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't test this with an aggregate setup. That's not possible with Windows, as I understand. But on Mac, I'm going to test aggregate with the NT USB Mini very soon.

So how bad is the latency with fairly small buffer? I want to get it to record autotune vocals, so I need to monitor the vocal with FX applied. I will be using nectar 2 that had tracking mode which makes it very low latency. So recording with an ordinary mic has worked perfectly.

Also i want to say that i think the nt1a sounded SIGNIFICANTLY better in the beginning of the video.

So for some reason when I record with this mic, I get all kinds of problems. For starters, when I go to sing, it like cuts my voice and sometimes even changes it a whole Octave! It's driving me crazy because I love to make songs but I can't make songs when my mic distorts my voice or cuts it up into pieces. Have any solutions?

Woah that’s really weird. I haven’t heard of anyone report those problems. You may need to contact Rode

Hi Sanjay, I am just an amateur who loves to sing and record, appreciate if you could list a list of devices that could help to sing and record audio on my laptop, as if only Rode NT USB is not enough and the vocals sound very rough without echo or softness.
@SanjayC
@SanjayC 4 жыл бұрын
You could benefit from having music production software if you are going to be recording complete songs. I use Ableton Live, but some cheaper options are Reaper for Windows or Garageband (free) for Mac. They will include effects you can use to add echo and reverb and other important effects for your vocals.

Hey! so I found a solution for the audio delay! I was at 50-80ms delay when I adjusted my input buffer (like RODE suggested) , but when I went too low, the audio crackled and cut out. I downloaded ASIO4ALL drives, selected it in Ableton, decreased the buffer size using that to minimum, and I got down to 7.17ms delay. with no crackles or loss to audio quality. check out www.asio4all.org/intro.html

There's nothing more pathetic than recording audio with tons of filters + auto-tune and then recording a video pretending you sing it live. Like, damn that's just sad.
