Both of those are about 2x the price, so not really a fair comparison. I've heard the NT2a and it's comparable, the NT1 is a bit less forward in the mids.

Hi Sean, thank you for your very straightforward, unhyped video about this mic (it might be the first one I've seen where the term "mind blown" wasn't used, lol). I have a question that I can't seem to find elaboration on elsewhere: what is the USB latency like, and is it troublesome when using the USB connection to DI into the computer when tracking vocals over pre-recorded music tracks in a DAW? I have read/heard some folks mention that they wish Rode would have included a 1/8" headphone jack on the mic for real time monitoring, but I just watched you track a vocal just fine in the video. Are you monitoring from the computer somehow without latency (or just tolerating it)? Thanks!
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine Жыл бұрын
Hi Sean! Any latency with USB recording is ultimately determined by your I/O buffer settings in your DAW. You should set your I/O buffer size to something low (I'd suggest 128 samples or less) and enable low latency monitoring mode if your DAW supports it. In that case, any latency is very minimal and for the most part, I don't notice it at all :)
@seanphillips9121
@seanphillips9121 Жыл бұрын
@@SeanDivine Cool, thanks! I can probably handle that. I think the use case I was hearing about latency issues was from podcasting and livestreaming via OBS, etc where they are probably limited in their monitor settings... and then all of the Rode demos were spoken word, voiceover, etc... nothing on tracking vocals for music, lol. Cheers to you Sean, and thanks again. Much appreciated for your help!

Massive thanks great review! Question, considering that the mic doesn’t have a headphone output for low latency monitoring, what is your monitoring setup / workflow in the USB mode? How could you hear and preview your DSP and Aphex before you hit record? Maybe you’re routing the audio from Logic to another audio interface? Love to know & thanks in advance!
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine Жыл бұрын
I’m monitoring directly through Logic (software monitoring). Just activate the input for the mic channel and set your I/O buffer as low as possible (128 or 256).

Hi Sean! thanks for the video! I am looking for the mic for myself (mostly singing recordings). And I have a question - what is the comparison between NT1 and NT1 5th gen in a vocal (singing) sound? From watching many youtube videos I noticed that even between NT1 and NT1a there is a difference and I, personally, preferred the NT1. And in this case, maybe there is a difference in overall sound between the usual NT1 and the NT1 5th generation? I want to buy without regrets. And not to loose if 5th generation is everything NT1 has + benefits, and not to loose in sound (if 5th generation sounds worse in comparison). What would you recommend in this case?
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine Жыл бұрын
Hi Alyona! I compared the NT1 5th Gen and the previous NT1, side by side. The sound using an XLR connection for both is virtually identical as the mic capsule is the same. Of course, in USB mode (only available on 5th gen) the sound can be quite different as you have the onboard FX available.

Hi, very interesting...about the fx, does it work using the PC CPU or there Is a DSP chip inside the USB body ? When You use these aphex fx have you to record It or can use It only for monitori g ? The xlr sound, apart preamp, Is the same one of USB ? Using MicMod, lava or other similari vst mic morphing/emulation, Is It enough ti set Rode Nt-1 First versione as the source mic ? Have a Great Day
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine Жыл бұрын
The mic has onboard DSP processing (controlled via Rode Central). The effects are destructive, meaning they would be recorded while active. The XLR sound is totally dependent on the preamp but yes, the frequency response and overall tone is similar to USB. The 5th Gen is practically identical to the previous model in XLR, in terms of sound.

I cannot get the 5th gen to work in USB mode 32 float with my 2 Focus rite interfaces. Works fine with my UA interface. I suspect the mic is not compatible with the focusrite Scarlett driver in USB mode. To be more precise... I can record BUT I can't hear anything eg the instrumental music I'm singing over. In the 5th gen ASIO driver settings it will happily let me choose the UA interface as output if that's connected,which is great. But on my PC it doesn't recognise the Scarlett driver... on my laptop,even worse, it crashes the laptop. I've been talking to Rode support for a few weeks about this. In my last email, six days ago, I asked straight out iff Focusrite Scarlett is not compatible and they haven't replied. The two Focusrites I have are the 2i2 and 18i8. Rode says the 5th gen won't work in USB with 18i8 because it has more than stereo outputs. (Beyond my technical knowledge this). But I would say then that it should work with the 2i2. SO.. my question is... is there anyone who is successfully using the 5th gen in USB 32 bit float mode with a Focusrite interface? (I believe the 2i2 is the best selling interface around)
