The reason the frequency response graphs look identical is that they have changed the old NT1's datasheet. It used to look very different. It's possible that the new one is simply more accurate with less smoothing (maybe..., the old frequency response chart never went beyond +2 dB, the new one goes up to nearly +5!), and that they're still the same mics, but the people saying that are not imagining things at least.

Considering that when you are mobile, you can just plug it into your laptop with no interface, yet use the XLR connector in your studio, Rode has a game changer on their hands here.

I have bought plenty of mics with the start of my podcast and finally got this one. Boy could I have saved money would I have just started with this…. It’s doing it all. Solo recording just with my Mac, perfect. Using the Rodecaster pro with guests and for remote sessions, perfect. Embarrassing story: I spoke in the back of the mic for half a day and was pretty disappointed with the sound quality. Once I turned it proper - I laughed for minutes about myself. 😂

Great comparison! XLR sounds more body and has a low end which fits your voice, while USB sounds more mid-range, losing some lows-end which is attractive to your voice. I personally like Austrian Audio the best, which sounds more smooth, full and has more bottom. IMHO.

This is a great mic, BUT some Windows users report that ASIO drivers for this system doesn't work properly (and I confirm that). So for me only XLR part works fine (which is not so bad, because I use mainly XLR). @@DarkCornerStudios Issue is simple: ASIO drivers don't work properly. They are unavailable in Studio One 6 or Cubase 12 Pro, in Reaper you cannot select inputs and outputs. @DarkCornerStudios
@DarkCornerStudios 2 ай бұрын
@yo3429 why can't they be identical? The usb is literally just the Rode revolution preamp which is a separate circuit from everything else. When measuring response...it is through the xlr port...and if they just added a preamp for a usb circuit to it...it would be the same
@yo3429
@yo3429 2 ай бұрын
@@DarkCornerStudiosFirst to say, no offense! Due to the higher max SPL there should be some mods to the diaphrame, so the exact same freq response is not to be expected as the system differs slightly. Rode has changed the former puplished freq diagrams of the 4th Gen when the new series shown up. The differences are only at the top end and therefor not audible when spoken to it with a mens voice. And yes, we don't know how much smoothing and editing was done to those puplished measurements, the actual data seems to be more accurate. I would be surprised if they match this close (+- 0 dB) at least one or two db is what I expect in the upper end and even this is a tiny amount. I really like to get my hands on it to make some measurements.

There's an unsubstantiated rumor that Freedman Electronics' original condenser microphone's sales were described as having "taken off like a rat up a drainpipe," leading them to name the microphone the "RODENT-1." They later rebranded the company as RØDE (stylizing the "O" as "Ø" in a nod to the founders' Scandinavian heritage) and renamed their condenser microphone the "NT1." The story isn't verified and resides in the realm of urban legend, but it somehow lives on in RØDE's Wikipedia entry.

My daughter also like the sing and record her guitar solos. if I just get the 5th gen NT1, and skip an interface like FocusRite. would not this simple approach ( which is MAC -> USB-C CABLE -> 5thGen NT1 ) be almost the same quality as the most complex and expensive set up MAC -> USB-C CABLE -> Focusrite -> XLR CABLE -> 5thGen NT1? I heard that XLR is the way to go in the professional world but how much this 32 BIT and direct USB X put a dent to that acceptance? I mean how much different are we talking about here? Bottomline is can I save the $s by skipping an interface like FocusRite?

It would really like to see what sort of audio treatment you have going on for these demos. I bought this mic, plugged it in and it definitely did not sound like yours fresh out of the package so it's hard for me as a beginner to figure out why yours sounds so much better than mine. It picks up so much ambient noise no matter how silent my recording room is, yours sounds like you're talking directly into my brain and there is no other sound in the world. It's of cause personly how people think of different mics. I feel wether you get a 4'th gen NT1 or the new 5th gen or even a NT1a, most people will be happy with them all, and the slightly bigger bulge in the upper mid and more top boost from the NT1a can easy be dealt with if you feel it's to bright. Especially for your first "pro" recording mike he NT1a packet is a no brainer. And remember .. if you put a 50$ mike in a pro's hand he can make great recordings if he knows what he's doing. Most people won't really notice the diff to mike's costin 1-10k. if the rest of the gear is still "intro" level using this kind of mikes is futile imo.

what are your thoughts on the rode podmic usb vs the nt-usb plus? would be using it in an untreated room for personal use. obvi i love the sound of the nt1 5th gen but everyone is telling me i shouldnt use it in an untreated environment. So the recommendation in this video for a on the road set up was unexpected.

Most people who record VO...or voice work on the road, do so in makeshift "blanket booths"

Would it be possible to do decent stereo recordings with two of these mics connected, both via USB-C?

At the 6 minute mark into your video, you do other mic comparisons with the NT1. You used the pop filter for the NT1 but no pop filter for the other mics. I have done a comparison with the NT1 with and without the filter. Using that particular cloth pop filter with the NT1, the top end is reduced a noticeable amount. It was audible to my ears anyway. The newer steel mesh pop filter does a better job without reducing the top end as much. Alternatively you can still sing in front of the mic, but angle your head slightly to either side...

Sounds more like a NT1A rather than the NT1... And that's not good, regardless of the "game-changing" stuff...

This 5th gen mic has serious latency issues when using the usb cable and you want to monitor using headphones. Useless.

I think this mic sounds like trash in this video. I like every mic he put it up against better. I'm not trying to be a hater, but I'm really shocked that people like this mic so much. I feel like it always sounds distorted in that 4k-8k range. Maybe I'm way off and I just need time with it hands on.
