Would you recommend this microphone for someone who would use it for music on a DSLR? Currently using rode videomicro. Thanks for the review! 👍
@learningcameras4 жыл бұрын
It would definitely be better than the video micro both with quality and features but generally a shotgun mic might not be the best for picking up music. I would almost prefer to use Zoom H4n bhpho.to/2RbdfiL and use the output of that to go into the DSLR or record the audio straight into the recorder itself. A shotgun mic is more used for isolating sounds from the sides of the mic and not really for picking up ambient music sounds.
@travislu37484 жыл бұрын
Did you run the firmware update that Rode released? Thoughts on the noise floor? From Lok Cheung 's Deity D3 Pro vs Videomic NTG, seems like the NTG has a higher noise floor, but it seems like Rode's update is supposed to fix it(although it states that it improves the performance for the Panasonic GH series). Great video none the less, it was very helpful to see the comparison to the NTG 5 and the micro.
@learningcameras4 жыл бұрын
I did update the latest firmware and although I didn't test pre/post firmware, I don't have an issue at all with the noise floor (don't have a deity to compare to though), especially given the features/purpose of this mic. I'm not often using it in crazy quiet environments anyway and having the safety track, adjustable sensitivity, filters, usb ability and so much more are way more important than a few DB on the noise floor which you can almost never hear without headphones and a silent environment

Hey Dan - I really enjoyed your video as I am currently shortlisting the Rode NTG Video mic. However, I am torn between that and also the Zoom F1 with the shotgun mic attached. They are coming out very similar on price and the Zoom can record to an internal SD card. My use in the main will be talking head videos. I would have the mic mounted on camera on my desk stand, at a distance of 18"-24" maximum. So whilst you don't feature the Zoom shotgun with the F1/H5/H6 etc.... Would you happen to know QUALITY wise, which would be the winner? - I have subscribed to your channel today. Peter.
@learningcameras3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter! So quality wise the zoom F1 with the NTG attached would probably be better since it has better preamps and would likely allow you to get the mic closer to you and not on camera. That said, you can always use an 1/8" extension cable with the NTG to move the mic off camera and then you wouldn't have to worry about syncing the audio in post which is annoying!

I'm looking to record ASMR massage videos (no talking). With your experience with the NTG5 ... Would the NTG5 with its high sensitivity work better for recording something that is low volume like that (would be recorded louder) but noise floor would be lower? Also, if recorded in 32bit float. I wouldn't need to worry about increasing the gain and could just raise in post without increasing the noise floor? I'm looking to get two mics and budget is a concern. Two NTG5 is getting close to my limit. With that in mind, what would you recommend?
@learningcameras3 жыл бұрын
Hey! So yes, the Ntg5 would be great for that. But even in float 32, it will still increase the noise if you need to boost volume. This would probably be your best option under $500

@learningcameras4 жыл бұрын
Hahaha. So if you are recording externally (not to the camera) and have someone able to get a long shotgun mic within a few ft of the subjects head, getting a good shotgun mic like the 416 can make a difference. Or if you need a very narrow pickup pattern, good (larger) shotgun mics can make a big difference. But if you have a camera close to the subject anway and have lots of ambient noise, the NTG is absolutely fine and gives you other options like using it for a computer mic.

So make sure it is not just the camera pre amps. Turn the mic volume up on the NTG and keep the camera volume down as much as possible. Otherwise these mics pick up everything towards the front, reject some sounds from the side, but you will still hear a decent amount of sound from the back of the mic so it depends on where your background noise is coming from

Hi Dan. Great vid. Quick question. What would you envisage the Pros and Cons to be when using the VideoMic NTG as a proper Boom mic, being moved around by a boom operator on a boom pole etc., specifically having it connected in the way that Rode describes in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppy4m6GGotKCj9U, using the Rode Wireless Go. Obviously not appropriate for a Hollywood feature film! I'm thinking when recording audio for a company promo, documentary interviews, etc.
@learningcameras4 жыл бұрын
Hey! So it's actually still a great mic even used in a proper boom config but most of the on mic features/buttons wouldn't be benefits since you can't reach them on a boom and the longer shotgun mics have tighter pickup patters for being used further away from the sound source. Some pros/cons but the NTG would still be a great option in this price range

Pick one for the best sound from a rode Videomic NTG . A. Hook up to a Fuji x-T3 with a 12 foot extension. B. Hook up to an iPhone. C. Hook up to a computer. Pick one.
@learningcameras4 жыл бұрын
So technically C is probably the best quality but you should be good with any of them and plugging to the X-T3 is the most convenient. The secret is the preamps and camera preamps usually are not the greatest but what you should do is lower the volume of the X-T3 all the way to level 1, and use the gain knob of the Videomic NTG to turn up the gain of the mic itself until you have the perfect recording level. That way the noisy preamps of the camera will not affect your recording very much!
