Hey hey again Niz! Thank you so much for checking out another video and commenting! It's definitely pretty neat and it's already paid for itself! literally used it yesterday for a on-location interview. Wanted to keep a smaller footprint in my pelican case and this setup was much smaller than my Saramonic setup and the audio came out pretty good considering how quiet the talent spoke in a decently noisy area with a basketball game going on in the background, it was surprisingly great! @@TLDR_filmmaker - What adapter do I need, to plug my Sennheiser MKH 416 Shotgunmic directly into my Canon EOS 650? The Canon outputs 5V on the mic jack if I am correct? How do I get the 5V from the camera to 48V for the microphone? Or does the Sennheiser already work with 5V?

The 3v required by the cheap mics is called plug-in power. It is standard for mics that plugs into pc computers or smartphones. However, computer requires a TRS plug and smartphone requires a TRRS plug. There are adapters that convert between these two. The VXLR+ expects a TRS plug. Most cheap lav mics come with TRRS plug and therefore need to be converted to TRS plug before plugging into the VXLR+. Usually, the adapter comes with the mic, but you will end up with an adapter on top of an adapter sticking out of the audio recorder.

Hey hey XonX! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! You are correct on all of that. Kinda stinks more cheap lavs you can find are all TRRS. Even very expensive lav microphones don’t necessarily power themselves. Look up DPA microphones. They only sell the microphone with varying connector types (one of which is a 3.5mm jack) on it’s own so they can be used with whatever kind of wired or wireless connection the customer wants. So this adapter isn’t necessarily meant to be used with cheap lavs.

Hey hey Urban Guitar Legend! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Yes, this should work with the D3 Pro. I've tested this with my RODE NTG which is somewhat similar. Yes you would need to purchase this specific adapter to deliver the correct phantom power to the Lav. Assuming the Lav is like mine where it's just a cheap one, one wire, no battery compartment... but you may want to test it in your camera's mic port to see if it works properly through there, cause my main concern was frying the Lav with too much voltage through a normal adapter.

Hey hey again Supperconductor! Thanks again for checking out this video and commenting! I've been eyeing the new Sennheiser XS system because of how bloody small they are: amzn.to/2TVGhCd (affiliate link) The build quality may not last as well with its plastic, someone could probably crush it if they sat on it the wrong way. I'm also loving their AVX system as well. Both of these while are different then their traditional G3 G5 line, offer a much streamline build that makes it easier to hide on the actor and then run the wires. But of course there is also the reaaaaally good stuff. A good friend of mine invested in some top line industry stuff that puts sennheiser into the backroom. When he grabbed actor audio for me on a two day shoot, outside, I could not believe how clean the audio was, there was pretty much no noise floor, and I couldn't hear any clothing movement either. There's apparently lots of high tech stuff that I didn't know existed where certain recorders can even digitally block out clothing sounds on the day so that your recording is as clean as possible. Its just nuts! Thanks again for stopping by!

Hey hey Mike! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! That's a good question, I've never played around with a cloudlifter before so I'm not sure what would happen if you introduced this into the chain. I guess if you are worried about a lav mic potentially not being sensitive, you may want to also consider getting a nice field recorder where you can up the preamp without much sacrifice to the noise floor. Theres a lot of great recorders these days, I have my eye on the Zoom F3 as my next upgrade. The 32-bit float performance seems more than good enough for the price! Thanks again for stopping by! Excellent video. I have given Thums up and subscribed to your channel. I am very new to audio equipment. I have bought two Rode lav mics, one Rode Go, Zoom H5. Also an old Azden Shotgun which uses a small battery cell. I think I switched on its power and phantom power of H5. It blew something and H5 had to be replaced. I have two questions: 1. Do I need VXLR to plug in Lav Mic into XLR jack? 2. When to switch ON phantom power while using mics. While using Azden with battery, what to do?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker Жыл бұрын
1) Yes, you will need the VLXR+ for the Rode lavs (non powered) when you are connecting the lavs directly into your XLR recorder. 2) You only turn on phantom power for non-powered lav mics, and non-powered on-camera shotgun mics like Rode Videomic GO II when connected to VXLR+. You SHOULD NOT turn on phantom power and shotgun battery power at the same time. You should only use one or the other. Additional Note: The VLXR+ can be used like a normal adapter when you do not have phantom power on. If you are plugging in a RODE GO, you do not need to turn on phantom power because RODE GO already has its own power. Hope this makes sense and helps.

Not sure if it's relevant but I would like to ask, I recently bought a bmmcc(blackmagic micro) and I'm thinking do I need phantom power for mics like Synco D30, or something similar like Deity D3 Pro or Rode VideoMic Pro when directly plugging it on the camera? How about Hollyland Lark150? Or an external recorder like Zoom is needed?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Glenn! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! No, phantom power is only for wired lav mics or shotgun mics that DOES NOT have its own internal battery source. The DSLR shotgun mics you listed all have their own battery inside, same with the Lark150. So you can just plug those in, no problem. As for the Zoom external recorder you'll have to check if you can feed out a "mic" signal versus a "line" signal. Cameras generally need a "mic" signal, a "line" signal will be too loud. Though some cameras can accept both and adjusts accordingly. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

How does it react to a stereo signal from a rode steroe vdo mic pro.
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 10 ай бұрын
It will merge the stereo signal into one channel. So with your Rode Stereo video mic pro you will need a 3.5mm stereo splitter cable. One things to note because the Stereo mic uses a 9v. You do not need this type of adaptor to send phantom power as the mic already has its own power source. You can purchase simple passive XLR to 3.5mm adaptors. While the VXLR+ can work passively, if you don't need the phantom power capabilities you can save a few bucks buying passive adaptors instead.

Hey hey PeeWee! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I'm so happy that this video was useful! Yup Phantom Power is meant to send power to certain mics that require a electrical current, most shotgun mics can be either battery operated or phantom power. I haven't ever had to record two mics at once yet, but I do believe you need to set your recording input as "Independent External" (Indep Ext?) and from there you would be allowed to set different pre-amp levels for each XLR input that you plug in. Salutations Robert! What about connecting a lav mic into an audio interface that doesn't have phantom power in the XLR out? Is that ok or any XLR output is too much for a lav? I own a Line 6 Pod UX1, and it does have an XLR with no phantom power, and I was wondering if I could plug my lav mic into it with a simple 3.5 to XLR adapter.

Hey hey Bruno! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! If your interface does not have Phantom power for this VXLR+ to use. Then your lav mic, if it doesn't have its own internal battery, will either not work at all or have a very low volume. Using a normal adaptor will not help. Thanks again for stopping by! Hi, I’m looking to buy a few mics to filming depositions with and was wondering if the ‘TASCAM DR-70D 4-Channel Portable Recorder’ is comparable to your suggested mic setup? Also, what lavaliere mic are you using? I tried to hit the link in your description but it’s not taking me anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Hey hey Stargate! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! The Tascam 70d is a nice recorder for sure, I've used it before. I'm not as familiar with depositions but would you necessarily need 4 channels of audio? A Tascam DR-40 you can either hook up two people to lavs or use the onboard stereo microphone to record a deposition at a table. As for the Lavalier mic I was using during this time, that was a generic mic that is no longer available it seems. As of right now I use the Deity w.Lav (review here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6HFeZ5vi9qqgaM ) Its definitely on the pricier side, if you're on a budget I have heard good things about JK Mic ( amzn.to/38ajk51 )* Affiliate Link The JK Mic is about $25 USD and should do the trick. Other than that, I would say if you don't need to hook up 4 people for the depositions, then a Tascam DR-40 would suffice, perhaps the onboard Microphone may be good enough because you can move the microphones to split into a "Y" shape so that you can get a broad amount of range at a table. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

So, a Boya BY-M1 does NOT need the rode VXLR+, the normal VXLR will work just fine?
@TLDR_filmmaker
@TLDR_filmmaker 5 жыл бұрын
Hey hey Casual Scored Gaming! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! The answer I have is two parts. Yes, because the Boya has a battery, you do not need the VXLR+ version, however the "plus" version does double as a regular adapter should you ever need to send phantom power in the future. Because the Boya is meant for cellphones, you need an adapter for these 3.5mm to XLR adapters to recognize them. Cellphones use TRRS while standard mic jacks use TRS. Something like this: amzn.to/2Zgg9sH (affiliate link) Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Fahad! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! You can use it in either or configuration, if you have phantom power turned on, it will simply just served as a "auto power on" function to the RODE Vidmic NTG, from my tests I didn't really see a boost in signal or anything. However I will say this, the included TRRS Cable was a bit finicky with this adapter, I had to wiggle it to get it to make full contact and perform my audio tests of the Vidmic NTG. I'm not sure if its my copy of the cable or adapter, but just something to note if you come across the same problem. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Hey hey Acen! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Looking at what you have, the MZA 900p is the only piece of equipment that is not needed in your current desired setup. To use the Lav with your phone you would just need a TRRS to TRS adapter as the phone will supply power to the lav (however sometimes some sennheiser mics are setup differently making them not work with "some" conventional TRS systems, so this would have to be a trial and error to see if it works.) Same goes for the Zoom H1, it has a 3.5mm jack for lav mics and that will supply the power to your MKE. So what is the MKA 900p for? If you are using large cine cameras or higher end recorders that have an XLR port. From there you would turn on "phantom power" so that it can send power to the lav. I'm assuming you are not at this point yet so do not worry about this at the moment, but just wanted you to know the difference. Long story short, you most likely do not nee the MZA 900p for what you want to do. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Pazillaz x2! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Depending on which video micro you have, I see that some packs have a TRS to TRRS cable (one end is gray plug and one end is black plug) You want to use the cable where both plugs are black. Once you have it all plugged in, remember to turn on phantom power on the DR40 as I showed in the video. Its on the side of the DR40. When you turn it on the DR40 will ask you if you are sure you want to do this because you could potentially damage microphones that already have a battery inside. Once you say "yes" it will send power to the VideoMicro. If for some reason this does not work, but your videomicro still works on your dslr mic port. There could be a problem with the VXLR+ adapter and you may want to get a replacement to see if this is the case. Another potential problem is that the DR-40 is not sending phantom power for some reason, but I don't think this is necessarily the case, this would be my very last guess. Hope this helps! Hey hey Bacayne! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! If the Zoom R16 has a phantom power setting, yes it will deliver power through this adapter (this adaptor is very specific) and your normal 3.5mm plug lav will receiver power. The reason I say this is a specific adaptor is because a regular Rode VLXR **WILL NOT** supply power. The wiring inside these specific adaptors are different then a regular XLR to 3.5mm adaptor. Greetings Jeffrey! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Based on the spec sheet, it does not look like the Tascam 10x supplies any sort of phantom power, so id have to say that it won't work in this use case if you were thinking about hooking up a cheap wired lavalier. Do all the lav mics need phantom power via a Zoom H5/6? If some lav mics only require 1v of power, what happens, won't it damage it anyway as the adaptor only is 3-5v

Hey hey 20centurymodern! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Generally, yes, lavs meant to go into a wireless audio pack (which generates the 3-5v) will need that phantom power when plugged straight into a recorder. I'm not entirely sure about a 1v lav mic as I've never ran into one, I feel most lavs are built to operate around the 3-5v standard. So I don't know if the 3-5v would be enough to damage such a lav. TLDR Filmmaker The Rode Lav Go mic in the manual says it requires 2.7v of power. I if I use it in a zoom H6 via XLR I assume I would need to use phantom power. The H6 has three options of phantom - 12v, 24v and 48v, all too high for the Lav Go mic that requires only 2.7v. With the VXLR+ adaptor it brings voltage down to 3-5 volts, but the Rode Lav go only needs 2.7v. I’m wondering if this small amount of voltage difference wouldn’t damage the lav mic as there would be tolerance? Technically aren’t one of the three pins on the XLR ground, so in theory any access voltage running through the Lav doesn’t require dissipate and any condenser mic shouldn’t be damaged because of the ground. Also of using plugging power one can’t see or really control volts when using a USB interface or a 3.5mm connection and am assuming when you plug say a phone/sound system/mic into a plugin power device it’s providing different amounts of volts, even if subtle within the range that plugin power provides, it’s small enough to not damage those devices plugged in? I would use the plugin power option on the H6 as it’s plug and play and doesn’t require adaptors, but as you can imagine if I want to use more than one mic for interviews etc I have to use the xlr inputs.

Hey hey thejeewee! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I'm not entirely sure if the Vmoda Boompro would work because of its setup for gaming headphones. Hey hey Brad! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! (affiliate links) XLR with Phantom to 3.5mm - amzn.to/2L1l3zL TRRS adapter to TRS - amzn.to/2Zmo0js If you want things rigged to your camera, then something like could work as it'll have hotshoe mounting points. I'm not entirely familiar with the Philips, but from what I took a look at I'm not entirely sure that the Philips is going to work with your setup. You said earlier that your XLR mics require phantom power, but the Philips doesn't mention that it supplies phantom power. I'm not sure what your budget is, but the Tascam DR-40 might be the better overall alternative if you are looking to get a more confined package. This way you wont have to deal with two different pieces between the Sony and the XLR to 3.5mm adapter (which requires its own batteries as well, and you can plug your XLR mics straight in without the need for an adapter. I forgot to ask earlier, but I'm assuming the XLR mics you have are full size XLR and not the mini XLR that you find with some more professional lav mics. The Tascam DR-40 can be ran either on 3x AA batteries or you can actually attaches a USB Battery Bank to power it, both allows you to supply phantom power when you're on the go or just in the studio (where you can just use a USB charge black and have the Tascam on indefinitely) Tascam DR-40 link: amzn.to/2HtUEJQ Hope this additional info helps!

Your cheaper lav can work however you need to make sure that the Lav you are using is supplying its own power. Most cheap lavs for smartphones, small digital audio recorder, and DSLR's are grabbing power from the recorders themselves. I took a look at what the Purple Panda Lav is, assuming you have the kit, you will want to make sure you use the TRS adapter (the one that converts it into two black rings instead of three). From there the H4nPro needs to have phantom power on. This should be the right combination. If this is what you're already doing and the hiss is there but not when you use the lav with other applications, it could potentially be the adapter causing the hiss. Thats my best guess. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

TLDR Filmmaker Thanks for your reply. This is already what I'm doing. I really thought that the vxlr+ would be the solution to my issue...funny thing is that I bought it a few days back only after seeing your video :). I wish there was someone that used the purple panda with the h4n pro so I could know if it's the adapter or not. Hoping that someone will see this in the future and reply. Thanks for your help though, it's much appreciated.

I’m just about to order my Zoom H8 recorder and I have been thinking about this. But unfortunately, I haven’t seen these in China so I’m let with no choice but to go in for other alternative brands. Thanks for this☺️

Hey hey David! You're most welcome! There should be a couple brands that perform this phantom power to lav mic function adapter. Good luck!

Hey hey again Michael! Thanks again for checking out this video and commenting! The $13 lav has definitely been a great investment the channel, it's allowed me to streamline the audio without setup or concern, just plug into GH5 and off I go, no batteries or wireless signal interference. This XLR+ adapter has already paid itself back, literally used it yesterday for a on-location interview. Wanted to keep a smaller footprint in my pelican case and this setup was much smaller than my Saramonic setup and the audio came out pretty good considering how quiet the talent spoke in a decently noisy area with a basketball game going on in the background, it was surprisingly great! Best 10 bucks spent to keep things simple! Thanks again for stopping by! See you in the next one!

Before I saw your face, I thought you were Linus, you know from Linus Tech Tips !! Question: why doesn't a cheap 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter work? I tried it on my Tascam DR-40 and it didn't work.
@TLDR_filmmaker

Hey hey Adil! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Haha I love Linus and the LTT channel! I'm about to butcher this explanation as I can't remember the exact difference, but here we go. The reason a normal adapter can't provide power is because of two things. 1) The voltage being transmitted won't reach the correct part of the 3.5mm side of the adapter. I think between the three XLR pins, this one routes the power to the correct one that will be transmitted correctly to the 3.5mm side. 2) 3.5mm lavs need somewhere between 3-5volts, sometimes a little more, so if 48v did make its way through, you could fry your lav mic. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Alptuğ Mutlu! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Do you mean if you plug a powered Shotgun microphone that's from on top of your DSLR? You can do it, just make sure you do not have Phantom Power turned on from your recorder as the Battery inside the DSLR shotgun microphone already has power. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!

Hey hey Rydex! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! It does not look like there is a difference. Wireless lav's require anywhere from 3-5v. The Antlion looks to do the trick like this VXLR+. Thanks again for stopping by! Stay safe, healthy, and I’ll see you in the next one!
