Rodger is 83 years-old and lives in van near Seattle. He says it's not that bad. He doesn't have to pay rent, and that leaves him with enough money to get a good meal or go to a movie. Rodger says that if he was paying $700 or $800 a months rent, he would not have enough money leftover to pay his car insurance or to simply have any quality of life.
Rodger says he hasn't given much effort to getting off the streets, but when I asked him if he could afford an apartment would he get off the streets...Rodger responded he would.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

When the interviewer says "This is no way to live", it felt demeaning and the poor guy's face fell a little. No need to make the guy feel ashamed! Unless you can offer him housing, let him have his dignity- which he certainly does have. Such a lovely man.

Real Estate agents have sold houses for twice what they are worth, it's called GREED and no LAWS against it! I heard from a lady that in NYC they put a cap on rent over 60k live homeless in NYC alone. Homeless counts have doubled in the last 2 years in King county, love those Democrats who vote for these suckers and end up on the streets. People keep moving to Seattle even though they can't afford to buy any of the few houses for sale around here. Just stay where you are not even the people cleaning toilets in Seattle can afford to live in Seattle. This guy could move to other states where it's not as bad. There are places in Arizona that you can pay as little as $500 a year to park a trailer or camper on a property, they don't allow gas generators but they do allow solar panels for power. One is Indian owned land.

I think "this is no way to live" in this context mean "I like you, you deserve better", "I like you, I wish you had more privacy and space, you deserve it" However, one argument could be made that some people decide to be homeless or live in a van because they want to, so it's no one's business. That's seldom the case, though.

@wizzies9413
@wizzies9413 6 жыл бұрын
Big B they say it is available, but in reality most of the waiting lists are "closed". Or you have a 7 to 10 year wait for a chance at a voucher. Public housing is usually in really bad areas and the living conditions in most are deplorable. living in a van is safer and actually better than that. In most states to qualify you have to have under 900.00 a month income

How did this gentleman keep so fit and healthy at that age and living in a van, most of my relatives died before reaching this age. he should write a book on his secrets to keeping healthy well into old age, he would probably earn a good income from sales. I would love to sit and chat to this guy whilst sharing a coffee. Greetings and best wishes from Australia.

He truly deserves more than where he is right now, in his life. I'm a Veteran too. I'm about to turn 72 in October and my heart goes out to him. The VA has nursing homes and hospitals but they have never reached out to each veteran, individually. There are still many military bases with plenty of land that the VA can use to house the needy veterans. Even "basic training" type buildings, where there are two or three people in a single room and share the showers and bathrooms down the hall, would make a big difference in the veteran's lives. They could also use the "chow hall" and other facilities on the bases. Instead, I see many homeless veterans begging for money on the local street corners. What a shame and what an injustice!

I used to do home health nursing and visited many subsidized housing facilities. Some were better looking than others due to how they were built years ago but all that I saw were clean and very livable. At the time there was a 7 year waiting list for one. Best thing to do is don't waste your youth or middle age years, work, save, invest while you are young and have the stamina. Prevent the problem rather than try to fix it when you are in your 60s. Working with the elderly scared me to pieces. I got two jobs right away and socked away as much as I could into savings and investments.

I understand this completely. Some people much prefer living in their own space, even if that's only 150 cubic feet, to living with other people. Unfortunately "the system" of banks, home builders, county and city zoning departments, and tax assessors work very hard to keep home prices as high as possible and prevent people from living in cost-effective structures like Tuff Shed cabins. Truly this guy would be happy in a 300 sq. ft. cabin if he could live there for $200/month (utilities included.) The government won't let him. So now he's an urban boondocker.

63 here, work full time and looking straight at this '' no way to live" situation as THE ONLY WAY to live whenever I finally decide to "retire". He was in a position to help out his friend and get him to a better place, even if it was only the front seat of his van and to me that says something about him and his living situation. It's better than living on the sidewalk in a tent next to hundreds of chronic drug abusers and alcoholics. Currently a homeowner who lives in a mansion but with all these expenses I know it is unsustainable so binge watching all of these van living videos to learn all I can. With all this new technology; basically power for "gadgets" is all a man should want, cooking is no problem with a little butane stove, coffee maker done, microwave oven so long as it's small. Toilet issue can be solved with a 5 gallon bucket lined with a plastic bag and a piss bottle. Bathing, well I've found that 2 paper towels and a sink with some soap and running water will more than suffice. Inside the van, a small pan of warm water, some soap and the paper towels will get the job done. I think the main thing in being "homeless by choice" is having the income to sustain this lifestyle and hygiene.
