The PBS special about Rodgers and Hart that this number came from was a golden delight from beginning to end. You can see pieces of it on KZbin: "Where or When", "This Funny World", "Sing For Your Supper", "Falling In Love With Love". All glorious.

Why is this amazing song not better known? I've never heard it before!
@christopherlyons5900 Жыл бұрын
It's from very early in the partnership of Rodgers & Hart--part of a revue they did. It's actually pretty famous, but not performed that often these days. Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore sang it on the Dick Van Dyke Show. Long ago. It hasn't aged as well as My Funny Valentine and other later classics, but it's still around.

This is the first time I've ever seen this wonderful number done this closely to what the original number might have been like. I think that Richard Rodgers would have loved the way Brian d'Arcy James and Susan Egan sing this song so purely.

Absolutely! "Beans could get no keener reception in a beanery" is an all time classic. In fact, I love Larry Hart's lyrics so much that I have an original program from the 1926 edition of the "Garrick Gaieties" where the song was introduced on May 10, 1926 sung by Bobbie Perkins and Sterling Holloway. Interestingly, Lee Strasberg, who had appeared in the 1925 edition (where R&H's "Manhattan" had caused a sensation the year before) was the stage manager.

Beautiful song and fine performance. Some of the comments( at least one) may be overly critical but I like this rendition.id love to hear the original performance from Stirling Holloway. It's hard to think of him as a singer.

His low notes need work.. not nearly enough breath support. can't stay in tune... must not have studied with a very good voice teacher, if at all, that's obvious.
@hankaustin70916 жыл бұрын
Gotta agree with you kerry.. his low notes are a bit out of shape.. he makes up for it on his high notes though.. really good singing! As for her, she's just marvelous in any part of her range!

I'm in total agreement with kerryincolumbus... his low notes go flat and out of tune... but her notes are pitch perfect, each and every one! They do sound good together, as long as he stays on pitch, that is.
