He has taken horizontal line as 1 because parallel above where the big circle touches vertical line that is = radius = 1 so the horizontal line is equal to and parallel to the radius above therefor the horizontal line is also = 1 but we need horizontal line only till the centre of smaller circle therefore we dont need half of diameter of smaller circle that is its radius and hence the horizontal line's length is qual to 1 - r

We know that the side of triangle is 2; which results in an equilateral triangle. 'B' is a point which is at equidistant from each of the three vertices(centres of each bigg. circles)., that is "1+r" from each centre to the smaller one. Thus, we can simply state that 'B' will be the circumcentre or taking that 'AB' will be the circumradius.
