Lyrics:
There were trains
And we out-run 'em
There were songs
And we out-sung 'em
There were brighter days never ending
There was time
And we were burnin'
There were rhymes
And we were learnin'
There was all the love two hearts could hold
And after all this time
You're always on my mind
Hey I could never let it end
'Cause my heart takes so long to mend
The dream that keeps your hopes alive
The lonely nights you hold inside
And after all this time
You're always on my mind
I still want you

My wife and I truly lived out this song. We met at 12yrs old, dated off n on through high school. We always wanted to be together but we both were too stubborn and afraid to make that first big move with each other. 15yrs later, we both divorce from unhappy marriages. We got back together and it's like before we lost touch. Hearing this song, every time, it reminds of the last 30 years of our lives.

When I first heard Rodney playing with Emmylou and The Hot Band in 75, it was so obvious he was an incredibly talented writer and musician. Rodney was 25 yrs young and a new force to be reckoned with. He's deserved more accolades than Nashville has given him. Great to hear him still writing and performing.

I first listened to this song in 1990 and the line that caught me completely off guard was 'there was all the love two hearts could hold' I put the song on rewind and listened to it again and again. I was in my early 20s then. 29 years on, the song still takes me back to those carefree days where and space had little meaning. It remains my favourite song, after all this time.

Mr. Crowell, you sir are an incredible song writer and singer. Your so down to earth with your songs and you bring out reality. I almost wish you were able to turn time back around and start all over again with many new songs. Thank you very much for sharing your talent with those of us who appreciate it. God bless you sir.

Loved this song from the beginning but hearing it years later after my wife's passing it touched me far more. I broke down hearing it after that for a long time. It's 8 years later now and I finally found real love again but Avis, I will still always have you on my mind somewhere...

I was new to Nashville, arriving on a Sunday afternoon. I parked in front of the studio of my new job .. grabbed my briefcase and started walking in. I turned at the sound of a pickup coming up the street .. it was Rodney Crowell .. he slowed, looked at me, smiled and waved .... my first celebrity to greet me here.

xxxbarflyxxx Next month will be 25 years for me but feels like yesterday. Married her twice as shrink said to let her go and she will be back after first marriage of five years. It took her eleven months to go astray again after she came back. She was my second marriage but my first real love and my best friend. I heard that she remarried but divorced again a few years later. I hope for her sake that she can find the right person and treat him the way she would want to be treated. With lasting love.

Got to see him at Brauntex in New Braunfels, TX a couple of months ago and it was amazing! We were DEFINITELY a rare few of the RC fans in the crowd and every time he would start a new song, we, of course, would "ooh and ahh", while I feel the rest of the crowd around us were like "huh?" It was amazing. The next morning, he was leaving breakfast as we were walking in so I went and told him how lovely the show was (yes, I said lovely) and he responded so kind! SIDE NOTE: If you get the opportunity to see a show at Brauntex, I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!! Amazing acoustics!

One of Nashville's master songwriters gets it right on this one. The songs you truly remember are the ones that hit home every time. A truly adult hurting song, done simply with truth and directness. 25 years on, it still works, Debbie's still on my mind, and I do still miss and love her more than I ought to, after all this time.

My husband and I saw Rodney at Shank Hall in Milwaukee, WI shortly after the release of 2008's Sex & Gasoline. It was the perfect intimate setting for this great artist who is one of the best at talking to an audience and you feel you know him a little better after he has performed for you. I shouted out a request for this song for my husband as part of Rodney's encore and he did it for us. Great show and he nails it live. He signed his autograph on my Houston Kid CD and he simply exuded strength and confidence when he put his arm around me. One of my favorite moments at a live concert. Thanks for posting this one.

After all this time...still LOVE This song. It was my song for decades in my awful marriage, havent listened to it for over a decade...and thankfully its no longer my song of sad and painful love. Finally Hes never on my mind. I didnt think that would ever happen. If he could have loved anyone it would have been me. I no longer take it personally. Without me propping him up hes a lost and lonely shadow of a man.

@@idawilson3600 I carried the torch for a guy over 21 years, always wondering what happened. Last year we met again...he is now a drunk, looks bad, and after doing some checking, he has gone from one bed to another for years. My point is....Thank goodness we did not stay together, it would have really been a big heartbreak. It upset me to see the way he turned out, but he chose to live like that, and I would have said no way.

After all this time, I think of you absolutely every single day from when I open my eyes to when my head hits the pillow at night. I can't get past the mistake I've made with my life, it haunts me. I don't care about what has happened since we've been apart, I just want to move forward, with you. My life was supposed to be with you. Im never going to let that go! I want you with me, forever, no matter what. I'm tired of living this way, I just want to pick up where we left off. I know it won't be easy but I promise you with every breath in me it will all be worth it. The hole that was left in our hearts has never healed that's why we cant ever get past it. We were never supposed to have to live this way. We belong together, we always have! I don't want to live with regret anymore. Deep down you know it too. You are all I've ever wanted, no one else, anywhere else! I still love you!❤

After All This Time Rodney Crowell There were trains And we out-run 'em There were songs And we out-sung 'em There were brighter days never ending There was time And we were burnin' There were rhymes And we were learnin' There was all the love Two hearts could hold And after all this time You're always on my mind Hey I could never let it end 'Cause my heart takes so long to mend The dream that keeps your hopes alive The lonely nights you hold inside And after all this time You're always on my mind I still want you There was rain That we outlasted There was pain But we got past it There were last goodbyes Still left unspoken There were ways I should have thrilled you There were days I could have killed you You're the only love My life has known And after all this time You're always on my mind Hey, I could never let you go A broken heart that heals so slow Could never beat for someone new While you're alive and I am too And after all this time You're always on my mind I still miss you And I could never let it in 'Cause my heart takes so long to mend The dream that keeps your hopes alive The lonely nights you hold inside And after all this time You're always on my mind I still want you Hey, after all this time You're always on my mind I still love you
