LYRICS:
Once upon a way back when misery was my best friend
Always running from a misspent youth cold and empty as a pay phone booth
I might have known a girl or two but nothing even close to you
Anyone with eyes could see I’d had about enough of me
How many times now have I heard myself say
If I hadn’t got lucky if I hadn’t had you on my side
I wouldn’t be standing here today
Before you came into my world I just couldn’t get my flag unfurled
Any wind to find my sail was moving me to no avail
The thing about the man I was lonely is as lonely does
Everyday a blinding blur that was just the ways things were
How many times now have I heard myself say
If I hadn’t got lucky if I hadn’t had you on my side
I wouldn’t be standing here today
You never did try to tie me down and every last time I’d came unwound
You didn’t try to tame or shame or frame or game or try to lay blame
Whenever I was deep in doubt you let me find my own way out
This is what it comes down to I learned to be myself with you
Now and then I feel so good I could learn to live in Hollywood
It’s not like we can change the world were just another boy and girl
Growing old together on Sunday Going back to work on Monday
How many times now have I heard myself say
If I hadn’t got lucky if I hadn’t had you on my side
I wouldn’t be standing here today

For the past thirty-odd-years I’ve owned the suit John Lennon wore in the opening scene of A Hard Day’s Night, a birthday gift from Rosanne Cash courtesy of a Sotheby’s auction of Fab Four memorabilia. I’ve worn it in public a few times, once on the David Letterman show and before that on a Country Music Award telecast. Only Roger Miller ever took notice. Smiling, he made the keen-eyed comment, ‘I like your teddy boy suit, Rodney.’ For the ‘Lucky’ video, we hit on the idea of paying tribute to sixties black and white, rock and roll TV shows like Hullabaloo and Shindig. For me, the wardrobe choice was simple: Saville Row gaberdine. - RC

Just saw Rodney on Thursday night, May 11th, 2023, live at The Lincoln, Trey Hensly and Rob Ickes opened for him, then joined Rodney’s Hot Band for the rest of the show. I am wildly in love with Chicago Sessions, I have loved many of those songs for years, especially “Loving You Is The Only Way To Fly”. I met my husband in 1978 & we discovered Rodney together & bought his first 3 albums & I named our little red Datsun, Rodney red car or Hot Rod. We are huge fans of Rodney, we have his 2 duet albums with Emmylou Harris and we saw them perform them & Wheels & Pancho and Lefty at Zootunes in Seattle. Thursday’s concert filled me with happiness and excitement, it was one of the best concerts of my life, just as I dreampt it would be Wednesday night. The last concert we saw before Covid shutdown, was Rodney at The Lincoln 11-19-2019 & I had the strongest feeling that our first concert after the Pandemic would be Rodney at The Lincoln, and of course it was (I’m psychic like Claudia). Thanks Rodney for this fantastic song, it’s such a bop, it slaps, as our 38 year old son would say, and I love the Seville Row Beatle suit..!!❤️🎸🌟👏🥰🎶❣️

. UPDATE; just saw Rodney in concert, Thursday night, 5-11-23 & he wa absolutely wonderful!! Trey Hensly and Rob zIckes opened with w “Brown Eyed Women and a Red Grenadine”, which delighted me & everyone at The Lincoln Theater, here in the PNW. Trey & Rob joined the rest of Rodney’s Hot Band, they were as good as I dreamt they would be Wednesday night. The last concert we saw before 2020 Covid was Rodney at The Lincoln 11-19-19, I had a strong feeling in March 2020 , that Rodney at the Lincoln, would be our 1st Post Covid concert, and so it was!! Like Claudia, Rodney’s lovely wife, who I met at the Merchant station in 2019, I am psychic, and Thursdays concert lived up to all of my husband and my dreams. We started buying his albums in 1978, we still have his 3 first albums & his two albums with Emmylou, we saw them perform at Zootunes in Seattle in 2015. We had the best date night, seeing one of our favorite artists ❤❤❤❤Thank You Rodney from the bottom of my heart, fell in love with your music at the same time as I fell in love with my husband ❤️and I love your Seville Row Beatles suit, luckeeeeee!

Exceptional imagination and alertness to surroundings is my guess, along with personal life experience in some cases? I can easily imagine him as the person "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight" who has "no time for lengthy speeches", but I always wonder who or what might've have inspired "Highway 17." Some of his older heartbroke songs seem pretty likely to have been inspired by his relationship with Roseanne Cash back then. Great songwriters always amaze me, and I always enjoy hearing from them about the things that inspired different songs when it is not obvious -- like with RC's "If Looks Could Kill".
