1980 and 1981, was a bad year for me and my husband. we was married in 1959. I was 16 and he was 18, had 4 sons before I was 22, this song came out just for me I'm sure. Thank God for an understanding husband. we was married for 54 years before he was taken from me with cancer. My best friend and a wonderful husband and father grandfather and great grandfather. I was one of the lucky ones.

I was married for 54 years to my husband and we had some hard times and we never gave up even tho we both spun out of control but always came back together. lost him 4 years ago to cancer. makes me cry every time I hear this song, no matter who sings it.

This song without a doubt is my most FAVORITE song in the whole world. I have listened to this rendition over 100 times. It is very moving and just so special to me. It speaks volumes to me, on many levels. The moment the piano begins playing in this rendition, it's like I am hypnotised and drawn to it. Beautiful lyrics and tune.

First, I heard this song sung, beautifully, by Alison Krauss, and thought it could not be bettered. But then I heard Rodney Crowell’s original. His emotional rendering is superb, unequalled. But the truth is, each person who sings the song brings their own special emotion and style to it.

This song is outstanding. So many artists have done great versions of it: Solomon Burke, Van Morrison, Blue Rodeo, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Crystal Gayle and the list goes on and on. It just goes to show how beautiful it is.

Hard to believe anyone could give this song a thumbs down. Obviously a person with no soul.

+dgrichmondbc I agree. I'm on my 4th listen to it as I write this. A friend up in Canada sent this song to me and it meant so very much. Loved it from the first listen and I thank him!

I just know I played it for my first girlfriend thirty years after we broke up and reconnected through Facebook. She had told me she did not like country but when I played this as the first song we heard when we got back together she cried. It touches ones heart, I don't know why!
