In 1999, Rodney came to the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO. I was the Tech Director/Soundman. At soundcheck I asked if he was going to do "Till I Can Gain Control Again". He graciously said, "No, I don't have it in this show, but I'll do it for you". I said, "Can I sing harmony with you?". He said "Sure". We did it, and I was elated to have sung a song I had covered for years with the writer. That night the audience shouted "ENCORE, ENCORE". He came back out and started that song and said, "Tom, why don't you come join me on this?" I did. I have video of it and pictures from that video. Tomorrow Night, 3-23-24, I am doing a very similar show as this one with 2 other Songwriters... telling stories that go with our Original Songs to a local audience. Watching this again has made me very comfortable with doing it. God Bless the 3 of you!

The older you get, the more beautiful you become. Each of you. Vince, Emmy Lou, Rodney. Thank You. . . . You've all spent your lives doing something that will outlast you, all three of you. You're music will still be here a hundred years from now. . . . You can't do better than that.

That's a beautiful tribute to them. You said it so poeticallty. Can I get your permission to use some of those true words in a song? It would be called "One Hundred Years". I've already got the melody. I will share the credit, although I don't think it will go very far...not because you didn't have beautiful words to say, but bc I have been doing this too long, and I am not getting any younger. ha!

I feel like I've spent most of my life with Emmylou since I discovered her voice way back in 1974 and my ears and eyes have never tried of listening and seeing her. She's so talented and beautiful. I first caught site of her singing folk music at a bar in DC in 1972 or 73. When she began later singing with Gram Parsons, I went out and bought her first 2 albums with Gramm, and I still own them. They are "GP and Grievous Angel" I've never heard 2 voices blend in so well. I'll take those albums to my grave. God Bless Emmy.
@margaretross91503 жыл бұрын
I've been trying to figure out why the voices of Gram and Emmylou were so amazing together. I'd appreciate some opinions. All I could come up with were her silken harmonies combined with his passion and ability to find the essence of a song. Never heard him sing with another female singer. I think Emmylou sounds great with everyone (except Dwight Yoakam, whom I otherwise adore) but never as great as with Gram.
@tomtorrell80193 жыл бұрын
@@margaretross9150 Emmy once said in an interview. I always knew I had a voice, but I didn't know what to do with it until I met Gram. She was mostly a folk music singer before that. When they met...I think it was 1972, she invited him to hear her sing at her home. Gram was looking for a female voice to sing with him and possibly record an album. She went on tour with him and his new group called The Fallen Angel's. When Gram first did a duet with her, they did a song called "That's all it took". Gram said he was blown away by her voice and talked her into joining her. Emmylou was mostly unknown then and Gram tried to keep her name hidden for fear someone would try to poach her. He taught her to sing country rock, and the rest is history. They sadly only got got record 2 albums together before he died. I have a copy of those albums and I treasure them. They are "GP" and "Grevious Angel"

Happy 70th birthday to Rodney Crowell! He has given us so many wonderful songs - and this concert was a lovely showcase for some of them. Vince Gill singing Rodney's 'A Song for the Life' in honour of his birthday was one of many highlights of this concert. I loved it from start to finish! Thank you so much to Rodney, Emmylou and Vince!

Well, Vince certainly knows what the eff he's doing. They all do, the mandolin and fiddle player is great, and I don't know how any of them could get through all this without busting out crying. Performers missing live performance in front of a live audience...good lord, must be awful.

It would bring my heart great pleasure, to hear that one day, Rodney and Emmy Lou, found a preacher man, took the "sacred vows," and went off together to Tennessee to look after the dogs that end up at her place. Keep on singing of course, until they can no longer do it anymore. It seems it would just be fitting after 44 years of singing together. I know they love each other.

@kathleen Johnson. The song "I'm Still Learning How To Fly" was recorded by Rodney's side project band "Cicadas" and is the closing track on the CD of the same name (I think). By coincidence, the guitar player in Cicadas is Steuart Smith ( who also played in Rodney's band "The Dixie Pearls")and is now a colleague of Vince Gill in the current line-up of The Eagles.
