Watching this video takes me right back to 1976, coming home from babysitting and turning on "Don Kirchner's Rock Concert" to see one of my favorite singers ever in this pre-recorded video and having my mind blown at its beauty- in every way- Stewart's voice, the lyrics, his clothes, the garden. There was no way to "re-wind" back then, but I was hooked on the song and went out as soon as I could to buy "A Night on the Town" the album that had the song.

Rod Stewart’s version is the one that maintains the hurt and vulnerability throughout the song, and that’s what makes it so unforgettable. Other versions lose it after the first verse or never have it at all. Sheryl Crowe sounds like she is just making excuses to let a guys down easy, not someone recalling pain.

Easily the best version of this song, actually just the guitar solo seals the deal. It's also one of the best songs about drug addiction ever written.
@garybradley13 ай бұрын
It's not about drug addiction. It's about a person wondering if and how it is possible to love again after their first love is lost.
@felixfranzen73183 ай бұрын
@@garybradley1 Yes, it is. The drug imagery is fairly obvious. But some people just don't understand metaphors and double meanings. For instance, for most people Moby Dick is an allegory about the perils of blind ambition and revenge. For others it's just about a guy chasing a whale. We can at least agree that it's a great song.
@garybradley13 ай бұрын
@@felixfranzen7318 Yep, it's a great song. I based my comment on what Cat Stevens said the song was about.
@felixfranzen73183 ай бұрын
@@garybradley1 Well, I could be wrong. But then again, artists usually say that, especially about songs than could have a controversial meaning. In any case, that's the beauty of art. It can mean different things to different people, even things the artist didn't intend or consciously meant when writing it. To me it's about how you never can replicate the euphoria of that first high (the first cut), no matter how hard you try. How it is to love something you know is bad for you. How drugs sometimes can help det your tears when you're feeling sad. Perhaps by making you feel comfortably numb (to quote another artist). Oh, and a funny thing. Melville actually once said that Moby Dick in fact is about a guy chasing a whale and nothing else. It is however widely believed that he was just fed up with journalists constantly asking him about the true meaning of the book. Also, sorry if I sounded condescending in my first comment. Didn't mean to.
@garybradley13 ай бұрын
@felixfranzen7318 No problem. I have never touched drugs, so from that point of view, it would mean nothing to me. Take care, and stay safe. ps I've just found something on the internet that points to the song being (as you pointed out) about drug use.........so who knows? I guess the jury is out.

This song not only brings me back to a very special place in my life, but it also makes me think about all the close friends that enjoyed this music with me as well. I wonder where some of those friends are now. where ever they are they will forever be in my heart. , There was not so much hate among friends and family. Oh, the good old days.

I feel ya on that. I was born early 60's, What a great time to grow up. 70's & 80's Rocked and were so much fun. It's a shame the young generation will NEVER experience what we did. I'm thankful for a great childhood .

Thanks for the many experiences here in the chat. I only had one breakup and at 17 you don't know what love really is. My wife and I have been married for 43 years now. Only death can separate us. As you get older, you understand true, deep love as solidarity in all situations, when children are growing up, when they separate at work, when they are sick... I am no longer afraid of anything, becoming a survivor. Then my heart breaks in two...

I saw him twice in Vancouver. The first concert was astounding- better than studio sound, and his energy! The second time I got talking to his booze delivery man backstage - he'd been on an (even for Rod) epic bender. Didn't even know the words to Maggie May. Give him a knighthood!

Fun fact. This music clip was filmed in the garden of Rods LA home alongside the staircase water fountain. This house was later purchased by Bradley Bell EP of soap opera bold and the beautiful. This fountain still exists and can be seen from time to time on episodes of B&B.
