After some of my own testing this is borderline a MUST for any Ally owners. I’ve gotten lower wattage usage resulting in not only longer battery like you said, but more quiet fans. This recent bios update has been a pain in the ass trying to balance power to the gpu while not having the fans ramp up as temps surpass 60c. 8c/16t zen 4 is more than enough to power a handheld especially at lower framerates compared to what a desktop with a more capable gpu. I’ve noticed 5 watt reductions in 30 watt mode when the GPU is pinned to the max in RE4 remake and in games where the CPU is chilling idly by, I’ve noticed that the device finally drops wattage if it maxes out a game rather than dumping voltage to the CPU when plugged in. And combined with the 900p mod, I think this is as close to perfect as I can take the Ally in terms of being able to choose my own compromises for games when on battery. I wish ASUS could have gotten it right but oh well, take my like and my subscription

Thanks, you summed it up nicely. There is also a program called G-Helper that I did a video on, and limiting watts will save you even more battery. But nothing is as smooth as capping FPS with CPU Boost off.

Today we have that 100x that power on a microSD card and it configures itself. But if it wasn't for guys like that supporting unpolished devices, we might never have got here." Hey, I have tested at least 20 games and haven't noticed a difference. I'm only showing this game because I wanted to show people how to disable it. I haven't come across a game yet that would benefit from it on. The main reason is the GPU in this is a lot weaker than the CPU (even with boost disabled), so the GPU is maxing well before the CPU is even close. Emulators however would probably benefit from CPU boost, depending on the emulator/game. I don't mess around with emulation too much.

The nice thing about AMD CPUs are that they usually have a base clock 3.3 ghz. At 8 cores its is more than enough for most games unless youre doing really high fps/ray tracing. Intel on the otherhand has only a base clock of 2.2 Ghz and you need to rely on boosts for your games.

I would be really interested in tests of other boost modes. I think enabled and efficient enabled (think these might perform identical on AMD) might actually be a better option than disabled. I've been testing efficient enabled on a couple open world CPU intensive games and it seems to offer better performance, higher lows and higher highs. Aggressive wants to boost the CPU as much as possible all the time while the enabled modes seem to be more dynamic, only using boost if the system (windows) asks for it. Which in my minimal testing seems to stop the undesired behavior of starving the GPU power while giving the CPU extra power when necessary. Also really helps loading times since the GPU is basically idle on load screens and free to boost power Anyway keep up the awesome work
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
Hey, I've tested this multiple times in the past across many AMD devices and found no difference at all between the modes. I'd have to specifically test this more in-depth on the Ally, but from my testing in the past it's basically "It's on" or "It's off". One of the biggest issues is Armoury Crate is setting windows to "Best Performance" which is keeping it boosted. Just changing windows power mode to "Balanced" makes a huge difference, but Amoury Crate will immediately override that change as soon as you toggle between the modes. This is under "Power & Battery" section in Windows 11, not the control panel power profiles as this is a separate option/setting. The solution I'm using is using a program called G-Helper which overrides that and keeps windows power mode set to "Balanced" so the CPU isn't constantly boosting when it doesn't need it. However in games it'll still be eating through power and increasing fan noise/temps.

It's great to have a smoother gaming experience now. An additional tip: The performance power profile is automatically associated with all custom profiles in the Command Center, in case you prefer not to modify the preconfigured power profiles. Here’s what I did: I created my own silent, performance, and turbo power profiles with different power settings (10, 15, 20) for battery usage. Then, I assigned them to the game profile settings.

If you find a game where it benefits from CPU boost I'd love to test it out. Over the years of owning many Asus laptops I have found very very few games benefit from CPU boost. In-fact I've lost performance in a lot of AAA games due to CPU boost taking too much power, and saw an increase in FPS once the dGPU could draw more wattage. The ROG Ally is different from the laptops in that it's an all in one chip, so let me know any games you find that have this effect and I'd love to check it out!

@@filt3rless you're right so far most games i've played even AAA are GPU bound so boost is not that important but I did notice minor stutters on certain weapon firing effects (minor) in Gunfire reborn (which is more GPU intensive). I tried Diablo 2 resurrected too, seems OK. The TDP on my 5700U (Asus PN51) rose up to 15 TDP which is the max it can go, so it still uses up my available TDP which is good. I find overall Windows performance to be slower to launch apps, navigate around the UI without boost, but not that bad.

I'm using an Elgato capture card. You could try using something like OBS to record the screen gameplay, however, you'll loose a good amount of performance. Screen recording software adds a fair bit of overhead to the system. An external recorder, like an Elgato, won't affect the system at all since it's run completely separate and is just capturing the HDMI feed.

No, I'm saying CPU Boost being on is using additional power with 0 performance gain when capping FPS. Lower power usually means less performance, which is not how it works when CPU boost is just eating extra watts for no reason. It's the same reason to not use "Turbo" as it boost to 43 watts for 2 minutes with almost no gain in performance. Just extra heat and battery drain.

Hey, I've tested many. Here are a few where I have tested out CPU boost and found no improvement: Crysis Remastered, Forza Horizon 4, Subnautica, 7 Days to Die, Ark Survival Evolved, BeamNG, Dying Light, Far Cry 3, Generation Zero, Resident Evil 2 remastered, Space Engineers, The Division, Wildlands, Skyrim, Insurgency Sandstorm, and I'm sure a few others I can't think of. I think the reason CPU boost is almost pointless on this device is because of how weak the GPU is compared to the CPU. I also have an Asus G15 Advantage Edition, and the CPU on this Ally is close to the same performance as that, however the GPU in my G15 laptop is over 3x more powerful than what's in the Ally and I rarely run into a CPU bottleneck even on the Asus laptop. So the GPU on the Ally being a lot weaker means it'll be the first bottleneck in almost all cases over the CPU. Now when I set turbo 25W and I'm on windows explorer only its put about 5W because of low needs... So is any case to use other plans? If one plan ex highest give all spectrum? It's very interesting because on video U said U did that for all plan but why? If one plan is now strat to menage Wattage is ideal situation or I'm missing something?

With boost on, the power draw at idle is pretty high. And in games where you cap FPS it'll keep drawing a lot more power than it needs. However, I'm not using this program to control boost: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4azl6ajj91_qdU. I prefer the G-Helper program because even with boost on in Balanced it draws lower power (because of how it changes windows power settings). I've found the only time CPU boost matters is in emulation, and even on something like BOTW I didn't notice much difference. So it'll depend on how you're using the device. For me, I get better temps and lower heat with it off so I don't use it. BUt if you do emulation, you might want it enabled. G-Helper makes it a LOT easier to change between them though which is why I like it a lot. You can have boost enabled/disabled per profile and it's simple enough to use. Hope that helps :)

@@filt3rless I think You did not understand my question, sorry... I was not assking for program to control boost or when boost is matter. For me turnig off boost is amazing case, and I also did that when I had Asus Zephyrus G14... Please read my comment again, thank You. Is great that W for APU is not static any more, its take whatever he needs and dont waste energy. But why have other plans if one plan (ex unpluged Turbo 25W) is now manage from low 5W to high 25W... We dont need rest plans, no need silent and 15W... Turbo plan with disabled boost is now working on wide spectrum by itself. Plan turbo 25W on windows explorer now take 4-8W for APU, so why usig other silet 10W from AC? thats my point. Disabling boost is amazing thing with devices like Ally or smal gaming laptops... Thermals is everythig in many cases.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
@@marcinlegacy9660 Ohh I gotcha, and I also had a few G14's and did the same thing :). I prefer to limit watts to save power and cap FPS. You'll save more power by limiting the watts and capping FPS than just having Boost Off and capping the FPS. That's why I use G-Helper, to set limits like 13W / 17W / 25W. Silent mode in AC is almost useless and Turbo boost the watts too high (even with Boost Off). Manual mode in AC is also really loud. With G-Helper I can run 13W in Silent, 17W in Balanced and 25W in Turbo. The fans are a LOT quieter, I don't get any boost wattage (like with AC) and it's easier to use. I hope that helps. If turbo is working for your, or even manual mode you can use that, I just don't like either of those modes and don't use AC. However like you said, CPU Boost being off almost always helps :)

Hey, so in this video, you'll see it's at 15 watts. However the system can draw the full 30 as soon as it's under more load. CPU boost is essentially the cpu going "look, there are extra watts" and grabbing them when it doesn't need them. Without changing any settings, if I loaded up another more intense game the system would use more wattage, up to 30 watts. It's hard to explain, but basically disabling CPU Boost keeps the system from almost constantly using max wattage when it has no need for the extra watts. So it's still running in the full 30 watt power mode, but with it disabled it's not unnecessarily using those extra watts, allowing the watts to lower down. The GPU in this thing is the major bottleneck, so the CPU isn't hardly being touched most of the time and doesn't need tons of watts. With boost on though, the CPU will just use what's available, even though it provides 0 performance gain. Hope this helps clarify it some, it's a bit difficult to explain properly. And the real issue is Armoury Crate with it's aggressive boost settings. This is true for every Asus AMD laptop I've had as well, they keep it boosted almost non-stop even when there is no need for it.

Warning to people who play docked older titles! Last night I kicked my self for about 5 hours why 6 of my games did not work over HDMI to my TV, when previously everything worked fine, in the end, the only thing I had changed was disabling the boost feature, and not even on every power setting only on silent. Thing is even enabling it was not enough, I had to return in the regedit, to 1 again and only after that they worked again. Of course my case is rather strange I play games like Need for speed most wanted and underground 2, Guilty Gear XX, Prince of Persia the trilogy, and others from like 20 years ago as well as newer titles, so granted very old titles but still. If some one is thinking about it, just keep in mind some games may not show up on a monitor setup. Excuse my sloppy righting.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
I can promise you without a doubt that boost had nothing to do with the HDMI issue to the TV. Returning to regedit and changing the value only shows the option that is always in windows, it has 0 effect on anything else. I'm glad it's working though, and I guarantee if you re-enabled with it working, nothing would change. Emulation however does benefit from CPU Boost though for performance. I'm not saying you should try re-enabling the option, but I promise you if you did, while the TV is connected, nothing would happen. It's a very strange coincidence. Either way, I'm glad you got it working.

Hey, I've tried quite a few and haven't noticed a performance hit at all. A few that I can think of off the top of my head would be (Forza Horizon 4, Subnautica, Far Cry 3, Skyrim, D2 Resurrected, Beam NG, Ark Survival Evolved, Crysis Remastered, Dirt Rally 2.0, Dying LIght, Generation Zero, Insurgency Sandstorm, Metro 2033 Redux, Resident Evil 2 Remastered, Space Engineers, Tom Clancy's The Division) and I'm sure I'm missing some. There probably is a game out there that would benefit from CPU boost, I don't know of one yet, but even if it did, I doubt it would be that much of a performance boost. However, emulators definitely can benefit from having it on. You can always switch it off/on at anytime though. And you can even set it so it's off in Silent mode but on in Turbo. Hope this helps! :)

All I use my rog for is emulation. It’s always docked to my tv. So it’s always plugged in? I use teknoparrot a lot. Would the cpu boost not benefit me? When playing Mario Kart DX I noticed a lot of slowdown on certain tracks. Would the cpu boost help make the game run better? As emulators are cpu heavy aren’t they.

Some emulation definitely benefits from CPU Boost being on. You could always try turning it off just to see. But if it's always docked I don't think it will be as important.

In Warframe it was completly ok until I started to load a mission and after that my fps went from over 60 to the low 20 or even sometimes low 10 and it took ages to load and restarting didnt help so I turned it on again (efficient agressive) and I never had problems since. Strange Issue ... maby Warframe loading times are calculated a bit different from other games like Subnautica where this isn't that big of a problem.

That is really strange! I just loaded up TimeSpy to get exact numbers to see and with it on 30 watts. In Aggressiveit got 8846. Then with it off I got 8087. So it's less than a 10% performance difference. If you turned it back off again, it'd probably work fine and I'd assume it was something with the game itself. But no harm either way with it on/off.

I've tested it in-depth. I'm not going to compile 15 games in a video that is designed to show people how to disable it. Feel free to enable/disable it as you wish, let me know if you find a single game where you get better FPS with it enabled, or better stability. And in my testing it's actually more unstable to run CPU Boost where FPS will jump around more.

It's better to use autoTDP program, it will detect current FPS and boost or lower the TDP based on the FPS, to hit that 60fps mark
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
I'd have to respectfully disagree with that. At higher FPS Auto TDP is more stable, but if you're trying to run lower FPS it's extremely unstable. I did a video on it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaWTaJJrh617p8k Also right now there are serious controller issues if you ever dock your system and want to connect an external controller.

@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
The higher the graphical settings the less you'd need CPU Boost. What's happening is the GPU is the main bottleneck because it's a LOT weaker than the CPU. This CPU is hitting over 8,000 in TimeSpy with boost off, the GPU is less than 3,000. So the GPU in almost all situations will max out well before the CPU. You can even pull up monitoring to see what percentage the GPU is at vs the CPU, to see the load each one is at. The one thing would be emulators. Some emulators use only 1 or 2 cores and will benefit from CPU Boost. I never did and in-depth test on emulation though. I just released a video about an SD Card issue I was having where I ended up returning mine :/. I plan to get another one once Asus acknowledges the issue and comes out with a statement about it.

@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
Hey, the option in Registry that you change is only showing you the value in power settings. It doesn't change any actual settings, but rather just gives you the ability to see the CPU Boost option in power settings. When you select Turbo, it'll be running in the "Turbo" power settings. You'll have to adjust the boost setting in power settings for each power setting individually (Silent, Performance, Turbo). And the "Balanced" mode is if you set it to "Windows" power setting in Armoury Crate (which I don't personally use).
