Guide to calibrate controls here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZfZnJ5-hdJnbaM Also tips at the end, specifically if you're using G-Helper. You'll want to make sure you're not using custom profiles for games in Armoury Crate.

This seems great. The option to quickly flip between three profiles (with independent control of CPU boost) means I can have a gaming profile on power and a gaming profile on battery, both with CPU boost turned off, and an emulation profile with it on!

I've tried following a few videos on getting some decent optimisation on the Rog ally. No doubt the device has good hardware but terrible optimisation. I've followed this video and on balanced, I'm getting more frames than the 15w performance mode and no real increase in fan speeds/noise. I can play Fifa 23 for example comfortably on balanced, with no stutter tried out other games too and Ive got good results. Even getting better battery life! Definitely will need to follow along some other videos.

@filt3rless

Hey, you can't disable the "Armoury Crate SE Service" without loosing access to the command center button. So if you follow along in the video, using G-Helper to disable services, then manually re-enabling optimization is the most minimalist setup you can run while keeping the buttons functioning.

So more or less, the only thing that one really gains from the G-Helper is adjusting the power settings. Am I correct with that assumption?
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
@@markgriffin2285 I think the main thing you gain is having 3 options you can tap to toggle, that you get to set. Silent mode is useless in AC, performance boost to 20 watts for 2 minutes, then drops to 15. And Turbo in AC boost up to 43 watts (and I think is what fried the SD Card Reader in my first unit). So every time you start a game you'll get boost wattage and inconsistent results. I prefer to just set something and it work immediately and I can control the level. Also if you want to go to lower watts to save power, like 12 or 13, in AC it'll still boost to 15W for 2 minutes. It's just annoying to me, and I prefer the much lighter experience of G-Helper. Also if you watch KZbin at all, AC keeps the CPU boosted using around 80% more power. So you will quite literally loose 80% battery life when using the device for media consumption (unless you manually go in and disable CPU Boost).

I wish someone would develop pbo from 32w to 50ish watts. That way, it could dynamically boost as needed if temperature allows vs boosting for first 30sec. And a better cooler, it shouldn't be that hard to make a cooler to cool the apu up to 50 to 60w and stay under 90c. Maybe a vapor camber?

I haven't found a way to do that. I've been using a program called "reWASD", where I've mapped the things I like (including G-Helper) to a "shift" mode. Basically I hold a button and then I get a new set of controls I can map anything to. So that's been working great for me, but the program is a bit difficult to use and cost money. It's the way Armoury Crate is controlling it. For some reason it sends both of the paddles as a single input. I've talked with the developer of G-Helper about this, and it doesn't look like there will be a way to do it (at least not an easy enough way). So it most likely won't be added to G-Helper. You can always leave A/C running in the background though and then set the paddles in it instead.

Once you're able to exit out of Handheld Companion and the controls are working, then uninstall it off the system. I've run into the same issues as you which is why I never recommend the program. I haven't found a good way to have both. If Asus Optimization is enabled then it'll open AC and Command Center. For me command center is much more valuable to be able to quickly access. While when I want to switch profiles I'll just minimize the game and switch it. Manual fan curves seem to follow closely to what Asus has, maybe slightly lower, but the fan noise is going to be about the same using manual fan profiles (from my testing). However, setting a 17W limit or even 25W in manual seems to run quieter than running the default 30W mode in Armoury Crate, so I've noticed lower noise, because I'm using lower power (which we can't set in Turbo in AC). Essentially I hold a button and get a new set of controls to map a lot of shortcuts I like (Brightness, Volume, Force Close, Alt+Tab, Mouse, Etc). But it's a paid program and a bit of a pain to setup. I switch between having the command center / armoury crate services on and off. In some games, like Skyrim, it's really nice to be able to pull up command center to adjust volume, as even the regular volume controls don't work. But I dislike Armoury Crate and having extra services running. I'm planning to re-image mine again and blocking all Asus services from starting/installing. So I won't even have MyAsus or Armoury Crate on the system and just run G-Helper. But everyone will be different in what they want, and command center is really nice to have so I recommend most people keep it on for quick access and shortcuts.

@@rogert250 One thing that's awesome about reWASD as well, is you can have it so your external xbox controller and ROG Ally controls read as the same controller. So anytime you want to dock it, the controls always work, instead of having to worry about embedded controller or the game detecting/using the wrong one. So it's another great feature, you can even combine a keyboard into the same virtual controller. Lot's of neat things in it. I'm not really sure on future content haha. I've covered just about everything there is to do with the Ally, so I'm figuring out what's next. I originally created the channel to just talk about things I found interesting which is why I named it "filterless" to just say what I want 🤣. I haven't noticed any difference. If you set 15W in AC, and 15W in G-Helper it seems to run exactly the same. Also, if you use the default values for Silent, Balanced and Turbo it does EXACTLY what AC does. It boost to 20W in Balanced (called performance in AC) for 2 minutes, then drops to 15w. Same with Turbo, however I recommend never running turbo in AC because of that 43W boost. And on G-Helper I've set it to 25W so it only goes to 25W. Overall 0 difference from my testing. And bonus is you can actually use silent mode and turbo because you can set the watt values. So I have 13W in silent and it's very usable now (unlike in AC where it's too low to be functional). Thanks, I'd say keep using Armoury crate if you like it. I like being able to set 3 separate profiles to the wattage I want. So I have 13W, 17W and 25W. In Armoury Crate silent mode isn't usable as it only allows 10 watts and is too low. Performance mode doesn't lock the watts to 15, instead it boost to 20 watts for 2 minutes. If you use Turbo mode it boost to 43 watts for 2 minutes, causing the system to get extremely hot. With G-Helper I can switch between the profiles and instantly have the wattage I want. So Silent and Turbo for me in Armoury Crate aren't something I use, but now I have 3 custom profiles that I just tap on, all with custom wattages I have set. Also, I'm using the official charger (but with a dock), where it doesn't automatically switch. To me it's night and day, but if it doesn't bother you, then no harm in using AC :)

@@filt3rless yeh i followed the video exactly, but what i did was disable armory crate entirely using services while leaving on the asus optimizations to see if that would allow me to use the left button like you described but once i disabled armoury crate in services that would disable the left button completely, so i then went back into services and re-enabled armoury crate SE to bring the left button back and that then worked... so then i closed armoury crate manually after boot but the g helper settings only apply while at desktop, when in game it gets overwritten by something (i assume Armoury) and applies settings i had set in armoury. but... i am slightly confused by you saying ''manually enable optimization'' so im going to watch the video again because that sounds like something i missed. thanks for the content.

@@jinx20001 The only thing I could think of is if you've set up custom profiles for games inside Armoury Crate. And then you're launching the game from Armoury Crate, that could be overriding settings since it has settings saved. One thing you could try is stopping all the services using G-Helper, then reboot and don't open armoury crate (turn off launch at login), and see if you launch a game through Steam, or the launcher you have the game in, and see if it works.

@@filt3rless i will do that bud, sounds very logical that could be whats happening. so at 11 min 6sec of your video if you pause you will see that armoury crate SE service is still running, that was what i disabled thinking that if i were to use g helper then i dont need armoury crate SE launching on boot but disabling AC SE service disables the left button even if you turn asus optimization on so it seems you must have armoury crate running in the background of the system to get access to the left button control, not a big deal i guess aslong as armoury does not take over when i launch a game, i do have a few custom profile setups for games and it was in those games this was happening so ill get back to you and let you know. probably tomorrow though as its feeding time for me then sleep. cheers dude.

@@jinx20001 Hey, I just tested it myself as well, you are right :). That service is running, when I disabled it I lost the ability to use the command center button (even though optimization was still on). So yes you need to leave that running. Also, I'm about to release a video on how to calibrate the controls on the ROG Ally windows wide which should fix deadzones on all games (as long as no custom profiles were set in Armoury Crate). However, if there is a hardware issue, I also explain how to test for that. Stay tuned :)

@Cryptech1010
@Cryptech1010 Жыл бұрын
I turn off cpu boost using handheld companion but other apps work as well. Whenever you restart, the settings are lost, but you can make the apps autostart on boot. This also applies to any other settings/overclocking. BECAREFUL using autostart though because if you made a dangerous overclock or did something to make it crash it will keep doing it every time. So make sure you test out the settings very carefully before making it load everytime u boot windows

You've tried disabling it in the profile inside G-Helper? On mine it works great even when rebooting and holds the settings. I recommend not using other programs that do similar things (handheld companion, x86 tuning utility, etc), when using this.

@@Demizeua Shortly after this video I re-imaged my device via USB and blocked all the Asus services. I have 0 Asus programs/services running now (no MyAsus, Armoury Crate, nothing). And I installed G-Helper, best experience so far! Also the "Armoury Crate" button opens up G-Helper no issues. Now when I press the button, I actually enjoy what I see 🤣

@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
@@blackryn0856 If you want the smoothest possible experience you'll still want to cap FPS in RivaTuner. You can try uncapped and just using G-Helper, it might be smooth enough where you don't mind it. So you could set something like 12-13 watts if you're trying to save battery and uncap the FPS. However if the slight stutteriness of it bothers you, then you'll want to cap the FPS. One great way to reduce power and get smooth gameplay is to use something like 13 watts, see what the FPS is hovering at, let's say it's at 55, then you can cap the FPS at 45 or so. Then you get super smooth gameplay and still only use 13 watts :). That's actually what I do most of the time.

I don't see any benefits to using this over AC. It's also unnecessary complications.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
That's exactly how I feel about AC 🤣. If you're happy with it, I say use it. I've found the device actually sleeps properly and shuts down way faster with the armoury crate stuff disabled. Also I like setting 3 profiles (12W, 17W & 25W). In Armoury Crate you basically can't use silent, then if you use performance it goes to 20 watts for 2 minutes, then 15 watts. And if you use Turbo it boost up to over 43 watts for 2 minutes, heating the entire system up. I would pay extra money if Asus released something like this and charged for it, it's that good IMO.

@filt3rless The benefits don't putweigh the added complications. How many times in this video did you excuse or trivialize some function or deficiency of this program? Anything more than two is raggedy and ghetto. The benefits of this is a lower wattage power profile? 99% of us want more performance, lower power consumption is a secondary consideration. Show us the benefits of using these power profiles vs Armory Crates. Show us in real world uses. How does silent mode at this altered wattage perform compared to the standard. Give us a reason to go through the added complications. So far the X1 chip doesn't perform well at lower wattage, so why do I want to use a bubblegum and ducttaped program? Other than wattage, I seen nothing that you can't do with AC.

1,000,000%. I have an entire video I made about HC and ended up not uploading it because I can't recommend it. The controller issues and weird bugs I ran into was beyond aggravating. The other thing is this lets you set 3 profiles with different watts so you have buttons to instantly switch. You can have 1 for battery, 1 for plugged in, and another one for anything you'd like with custom settings. It's a really awesome program, and I've tested all the others (that I know of) and they don't come close to the polish, easy of use, and functionality of this one. Even on my Asus G15 laptop, this thing works flawlessly and has made it such a great experience to be able to use "silent" mode. Armoury crate limits silent mode so much on the Ally and their laptops that's it's almost unusable. Now it's completely usable and a joy to use :)

@@filt3rless Interesting, could you show your setting for balanced and turbo as well? Also to launch games you have to use classic shortcuts then?
@filt3rless
@filt3rless Жыл бұрын
@@asryan7582 You can still use Armoury Crate to launch your games if you'd like. I don't know about the custom key bindings per game (as I never used it, so I have a global setting). Basically if you even set a game profile for one game, you loose global settings. So I purposefully didn't, and when I change my back buttons, it changes it globally for every game. Also, I show the settings in the video, 13W silent (although I will also use 12W, just depends), 17W for balanced and 25W for Turbo. However, I also change Turbo frequently and usually run more around 22W or so. There is a pretty big drop off on the top end of increasing power.
