I fell in love with the Who after I saw the movie Tommy in the theaters. I was just 12 at the time, but I bought all their LPs and the solo ones, too. Always takes me back to simpler and more happy times.

Just to clarify some of these comments. Leo Sayer wrote this for Roger Daltry and only recorded his version a year after this one. So technically this is the original

Didn't know that.........kind of a d!ck move, right? I remember listening to Leo Sayer singing this song.....so for all i knew, that was the original (and, still the best.....nostalgia is powerful). Thanks for the info though....i'm now going to have to look into the history of this song a bit more - as surely, one doesn't just write a song for someone else, only to reclaim it, in the process virtually deleting the 'original' from existence. Strangest part....i clicked this link because the name seemed familiar......and i still am unsure of who Roger Daltry is, or why his name is familiar to me...

Help...I used to have "One of the Boys" by Roger and there was a country-western type song he did on it that I really liked and can not find it anywhere. It was done the way the Stones did "Far Away Eyes", or "Dead Flowers". I think it was a track on the same side as Avenging Annie.

Everybody knows down Ladbroke Grove You have to leap across the street You can lose your life under a taxi cab You gotta have eyes in your feet You find a nice soft corner and you sit right down Pick up your guitar and play Then the police come and says move along So you move along all day I'm a one man band Nobody cares or understands Is there anybody out there who could lend a hand To my one man band? For three days now I haven't eaten at all My my I must be getting so thin Soon my cap won't be large enough To drop a half a crown in So hey there mister don't you look so sad Don't look so ill at ease I can play you any song you chose To cheer up the life you lead Oh I'm a one man band Nobody sees nor understands Is there anybody out there who could lend a hand To my one man band? And oh, oh, oh look at the rain falling Oh, oh, oh look at the rain Nobody hears the minstrel boy, as he sings his tale of woe Nobody sees him disappear And nobody sees him go So hey there mister don't look so sad Don't feel so ill at ease I can play you any song you chose To cheer up the life you lead Oh I'm a one man band Nobody sees nor understands Is there anybody out there who could lend me a hand To my one man band? Oh I'm a one man band Nobody cares nor understands Is there anybody here who could lend a hand To my one man band? I'm a one man band I'm a one man band Ooo one man band Ooo I'm a one man band Oh I'm a one man band Ooo one man band

The lyrics include reference to half a crown, a pre-decimal British coin worth an eighth of a pound sterling. but in 1973 these coins no longer had any value, so is the suggestion that the coin dropped in the hat is worthless?
