2011 has to be the most frustrating season of Roger's career. In all 4 Slams, he was playing at a very high level, but was unable to close out his strong performances. 2011 RG, he played perhaps his best match ever, stopping Nole's win streak. Had a 5-2 lead in the 1st set against Rafa and if not for a drop shot missing by a centimeter, would have closed out that set. Who knows how that match would have played out had Roger won that set. Then in Wimbledon, he built a 2 set lead over Tsonga in the QF, but somehow found a way to lose. Then in the Us Open, let a 2 set lead slip away against Nole in the SFs. And still, he had two Match points on his own serve in the 5th set, but ultimately lost the match. In a perfect world, Fed might have won 2 Slams that year. Instead, it was the first time in his career (since 2003) not winning a single GS in a year.
@FacelessWarrior862 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, brother! I have followed Roger's career very closely for the last 15 years and 2011 was very very frustrating indeed. AO was the least painful I guess, as he was outplayed by Nole in th SF. In RG he should have won the first set 6-2 and then God knows... For me to this day Wimbledon 2011 is one of the great mysteries of Roges's careed. How he managed to loose on his favorite court from 2-0 from a Tsonga, who was not a grass court player at all. And US open is just a total hartbreak. Not being able to convert 2MPs second year in a row. I guess the 2010 match haunted him when he got to serve it out. Had he won, we would be able to witness the Fed Nadal final at the US open that we never had. For sure, 2011 Roger was pretty capable of winning 1 or 2 slams at least.
@ondrejgeneric8980 Жыл бұрын
yes, I agree, 2011 was really frustrating season for Roger. When I look back, I also cannot understand how he could have lost to Tsonga in Wimbledon from 2:0 lead, thats crazy, as well as the defeat from Novak at the USO, but this is well known story where Roger really choked badly and didnt convert MPs on his own serve, so the loss from Tsonga was a bit forgotten I think. He was really capable to beat Novak at Wimbledon, so it is a pity he blowed it that year, and similar incomprehensible match and loss even from the MP came in 2018 against Kevin Anderson. Then again, the match where he defeated Novak at RG was great from Roger, now doubt about that, but still he could not beat Nadal and pick the title so again,he was a bit unlucky like many times in his career, had he won againt Novak at AUS Open instead of FO, he would have very likely grabbed the title there, what would have been better for sure. Then of course another frustrating match was W2019 Final, and I believe had he won the SF at USO 2011, he would have also won that match, but this came to his mind and choked again on the MPs, that was really heartbreaking loss. I also remember the USO 2015 final, another terrible match to watch..there were so many blown breakpoints from Roger that he could have also won it, but he wasnt confident enough to convert them, so here I would blame a bit Rogers team that he should have been prepared better in his head, but we wasnt. Similar story is I think RG 2007 final with the BP conversion against Rafa. So against Novak in those close matches it was realy about confidence since 2011 from Roger, he should have won at least 2 of them. When looking back to the rivalry with Rafa, on clay of course he was the beast and Roger had really bad match up with him, the one handed bh against his brutal topspin fh was a real issue on clay. I still think he could put up a better fight and get into the decider at least once, what he did it in Rome once on really slow clay, big pity he didnt win this match, he had 2 MPs there. He was playing with smaller rocket head as well, and should have changed it earlier, in 2014 it was too late I think. He should also have been prepared better tactically for these matches, like in 2017 or later he had no problem with Rafa outside clay so it was really possible, the "neo" BH helped him without any doubt to beat him, and who knows how it would work on clay in 2017, but Roger skipped RG that year. And I am pretty sure that he would have been capable to win at least one close match outside clay, either Wimbledon 2008 or Aus Open 2009 with better tactics. There are also two another GSs that he could have won both, or at least one of them for sure,it is AO05 and tough loss from MP to Safin and then of course USO 09, I like Del Potro, but this is really hard to understand how Roger could not win this. To sum it up, Roger had really great career, but still he missed so many chances to grab some more major titles against his greatest rivals or at those other two occasions I mentioned (apart from incomprehensible losses at W to Tsonga or Anderson, but these were only QFs, or USO2014 should be mentioned - everything was prepared for Roger after Novaks defeat,but suddenly Cilic showed up with performance of a lifetime so again bad luck for Roger..), and I am pretty sure he was capable to do it, but he somehow didnt manage to do...that still hurts a bit. Of course the age factor at least from 2014 favoured Djokovic in the Djok-Fed rivalry, thats no doubt about it,and slowing down the surfaces as well just at the time when Djokovic turned into his prime...still it isnt an excuse for US11 or Wimby 19 - this was only Rogers fault.

The shot at 4:10 was actually the shot of Federer's career. That was his fourth-rounder against Tommy Haas the day after Soderling beat Nadal. With Rafa out suddenly all eyes were on Federer, and he immediately went down two sets to Haas. That point shown was a break point at either 4-4 or 3-4 in the third set. If Haas gets it he only has to hold serve to close out the match. Federer made that ridiculously aggressive inside-out forehand to get to deuce, held, won the third set and then two more to move on. The way I see it, Fed just did not try hard enough to find a way to beat Nadal on clay, after seeing and testing Nadal in Rome 2006 and In RG finals, I feel Fed decided that it is not worth it for him to grind very hard in clay just to beat Nadal, and will just play for his chances whenever he faces Nadal. He relied on his skills on other surfaces to win more GSs. For some reason, I feel the Fed lost his appetite for more wins, when he saw that tennis became a numbers game rather than a sport that you enjoy playing and he is like “ I could not care less”.

From 05-11 Federer lost one match at Roland Garros to every player not named Nadal (ironically losing to Soderling in '10). He went 40-6 in those 7 years.

If not for Rafa, Federer would have won 6 FO titles in those 7 years and maybe a 7th in 2019. Federer was phenomenal on all surfaces, but Rafa on clay is just ridiculous. Two of the best to ever do it.

There is only one drawback in Federer and Djokovic's game on clay: Rafael Nadal
@jkg72972 жыл бұрын
Shame he didn't figure out how to beat Nadal at least once in 2005-2008. Or in 2011 after beating the absolute machine, Novak. I mean, Djokovic did it twice. A total no-namer did it as well, and it was in Rafa's prime at RG. So it was definitely possible. Especially for Roger who was a great clay player, with 73 RG wins and 5 finals. Kinda a mystery to me. Roger was the better player out of these two back then. He faced him in the final, in his prime, 3 times in a row, and still couldn't even put up a fight. Wasn't even close. I think that he could've done something different. Prepare in a different way. I don't know, I feel like he should've won at least once.
@Ky-fm8ho2 жыл бұрын
Injuries are the reason Soderling and Nole could pull it off. Roger was never lucky enough to meet the same Rafa Nole faced in 2015 and 21 or else, he would have won definitely.

Before Wimbledon playing there Hampers your Chance of Winning at Wimbledon... Ivan Lendl was Scary to play at Wimbledon Saying " Grass is for Cows "...
