That was some of the most genius tennis I've ever seen Federer play! Not even fan-boying, here. I guess the common denominator (with his most brilliant years in his career) is *having fun* - no pressure. When he is under pressure, from the likes of Djokovic and Nadal, mainly, but not just them - it just oppresses his spirits, his artistry and passion. I hope he will carry this sheer unbridled, impetuous joy to the ATP, and especially the Majors, to come. But either way, the wonderful thing to see is that he IS capable of playing at as high a level as ever. (Granted 5 sets will be much more taxing). Aside from that, this was a really fascinating and entertaining match. The Laver Cup is officially - *awesome!*

Yeah in 2017 i dont think he ever expected to reach the top again so was playing with nothing to lose. Quite interesting. This is a match that Kyrgios could have made tighter, as he normally rises to the occasion against top players. However, inability to deal with adverse circumstances once again kept him from doing so. A commonality seems to be even against top players, if a call doesn’t go his way, he cannot move past it. Last year in Beijing, it was a similar story where he never recovered. Unless he learns to accept decisions from the umpire, fair or unfair, it is logical to presume that he will continue to lose many important matches where an umpire’s decision goes against him. Acceptance of unfairness is an integral part of life.
@jamesnm216 жыл бұрын
He may have a mental struggle with feeling demoralized and feeling disadvantaged due to something in his past and when a call goes against him it triggers that mindset and he sort of gives up believing in himself and struggles with negative thoughts. It's probably a tough battle for him whatever the reason and hopefully he gets past it.
@JiraiyaSama866 жыл бұрын
jamesnm21 A logical deduction. As habits are hard to break, habitual thought processes are no exception. And while he may be aware of such, if such is the case, it is quite a hurdle to overcome.

Kyrgios seriously needs to grow as a person (so does McEnroe). Whether you agree with the umpire call or not, he's not going to change it no matter how much abuse you shout his way. It just makes the match uglier, and the umpire was within his right to call that Federer could have made the return (no matter how small). I don't think there's a chance he could have, but it's the umpire's call.

Nicks forehand is so poor compared to when he first came through. I don’t know what he wants to achieve with that forehand style. It’s not penetrating nor is heavy top spin. Dare I say it’s similar to what Gasquet produces off his FH. The backhand also looks weird and he doesn’t look in full control. He needs to make some technical changes on his game because right now he is getting worse every month. I feel like his return is so poor that he would be better off standing where Rafa does just to get balls back in the court. His movement isn’t bad but it’s more his anticipation which is shocking. The movement requires tennis IQ and Nick lacks tennis IQ when he is defending. He needs a veteran coach who can tactically fix him up and someone who will make some technical changes.

Only one who can beat Federer when he is playing like this is, Djokovic. Krygios ground strokes are far too inconsistent, which gives Federer far too much time to play his shots. Take time away from Federer, with consistent deep and penetrating ground strokes and he's in trouble. Only Djokovic can do it over 5 sets. It would have been interesting to see a prime Federer of 2004-2007, with the current modified backhand and attacking strategy, match up against a prime Djokovic. It would be incredibly close, but I'll pick Roger Federer.

The best player was the ref. He had to bear both Kyrgios and McEnroe

It’s all fun and games until someone brings up the subject of “your job tomorrow” or “your pay check”. Some people obviously take themselves too frigging seriously. It shows class man. It really does.

NK could make better use of his slice to set up the forehand and approach the net more often. It would be nice to see him player better. Tactically he needs to improve if he plays Fed.

Fed’s red racket looks too nice. He should rock that for all events honestly.

Federer for me is the best in the History - i hate Nick till my Death , but Roger should have given Nick the Point . the shouting came after he touched and returned the Ball .

I actually think McEnroe coming out like that was a very good coaching move. He shows support for his player, he takes the heat off Kyrgios and eats up some of the frustration for the young man. Its more than just this match for Kyrgios, its his whole career on tilt right now. Fed just loves crushing these young studs *caugh* Roddick *caugh*.

Perfect timing for Federer. He was in the zone

Now, THIS is the Federer I like. It's scary to watch him like this (in a good way!). My goodness, he was good here, it was a pleasure to watch. And journalists are seriously still asking him about retirement? Do they not watch any of his matches??
