Henman was an inconsistent player but on grass he was a difficult opponent for anyone. He used to lose his serve too often which cost him a lot in his career. One thing Henman did do really well was the overhead volley, not seen too many do it better, unfortunately there were other weaknesses to his game. However in 2001 he did play ever so well and really had a great chance to win Wimbledon, he was probably the best player in the tournament that year and was really unlucky in the semi final, Ivanesevic was on the ropes and was saved by the rain. I think after that semi final defeat his chance for a grand slam win was realistically gone as the serve and volley style of tennis become a lost art. But whatever your view of Henmam, he did some produce exciting tennis on grass

The serve and volley style of tennis did not become a lost art. It was a pragmatic response by players adjusting to the heavier (and deeper) ground strokes brought about by modern innovations in racquet and string technologies. (The forehand mechanics also had to change to take advantage of these.) Even serve and volley tennis phased out of Wimbledon because of changes to the grass courts there.

Henman has stated himself that he was lucky to be 2-1 ahead of Goran before the rain delay as some fortune went his way and he also said that in the end, Goran deserved the win...but he was far more than a difficult player on grass, he was an awesome server and volleyer with a big serve hence the double faults here and there. He basically got to 4 w'don finals (I know semis as he, unfortunately, met all the winners of the tourns in those matches and he would have easily beat some of the other opponents who made it to the finals on the other side of the draw.

A brilliant year and I can remember watching this and willing Henman. After this, it felt like his best chance. It wasn’t to be. Of course, he never got to win it but in all of the hype and what has happened since, it’s easy to forget what a wonderful player Tim was. The other fella? He was just on a GOAT warm up here. A great moment in time, I really enjoyed watching this. I’m going to try and watch last year’s final but I know I won’t cope with the result still....

It's a bit odd that they go on about the "changing of the guard" Sampras v Wimbledon 2001 and Federer didn't even really contend at any slam until 2 years later and with Sampras winning the US Open 2002.

The 💯 rye grass wasn't slower. The speed was the same as the previous rye/ fescue mix but it was more resilient and the bounce was higher and more consistent. Of course after Wimbledon made the balls slower and heavier and coupled with hot weather it played much like a hard court with a higher bounce , but mostly due to the heavier balls not the court itself

I do think Tim would have won Wimbledon but of course he fell foul of Sampras twice in the semis and then the rain interrupted semi vs Ivanisevic in which he was 2 pts from victory. Somewhat unlucky and somewhat not strong enough mentally, but still one of the best tennis players we've ever had in the UK.
