Roger Hodgson - Quando a alma canta !
@CarissaCiociola8 жыл бұрын
"Hide in Your Shell" has always spoken to me deeply on many levels, and had a similar personal meaning to me as it did for Roger. As a child and while growing up, my father always told me I needed to "come out of my shell" - being very soft-spoken, shy, longing for answers to deeper, spiritual questions and a sense of belonging, I always turned to this beautiful song for comfort and solace to not feel so isolated and alone; this song became a close friend. The pinnacle of this song for me was seeing Roger perform it in concert this past November. Hearing Roger perform it, being the same age as when he wrote it at 23, was emotionally poignant and powerful - I understood and felt the song in a new, very profound way. That moment left an indelible impression on me, and I've found how just one song can connect so many of us, through our hearts, lives and personal journeys of seeking and soul-searching. "Thank you" could never hold so much meaning and gratitude... Thank You Roger, with all my heart ♥

It was in 1995 when i heard Supertramp, i was 15. My country, Ukraine, as part of the USSR, had long been behind "the iron curtain" and there was very little good stuff to listen to. Occasionally some foreign students or diplomats brought records of British and American groups into the country and they cost a lot of money. Just like everything from behind the border. Me and people like me would find rare vinyls and copied them on tapes.... i was so deeply moved when i heard Hodgson's voice - the first song i heard was "Take The Long Way Home". I was very much into The Doors at that time, but i didn't really feel like listening to the Beatles or Rolling Stones. So i fell for Supertramp and later Procol Harum and Uriah Heep. Britain's got REAL musical talents and i am so happy to have been a fan of so many great bands from the U.K. for this many years! And thanks to music i have learned my English. Thanks to Roger Hodgson , the mighty uniter of people's hearts throughout the world! Hello from the Ukrainian Kingdom ;-)

The first time time i heard this song, I was on the bus ride home from school. I almost started crying right then, standing up in the bus amidst strangers. I’m now passing through my worst moment in life. I regularly think the worst thoughts possible (“what will you gain, making your life a little longer?”). This song is the ultimate comforter, friend, ally and companion through the worst nights, that seem infinite. Roger, thank you. Your song has helped and is helping a teenager the world over, even forty years after it was written. Much love

Supertramp left its mark, especially because it combined the technological resources of its generation without highlighting what is most human in each of us. That is why his work remains current.

Supertramp with Roger Hodgson was in these times (1970th) the BEST LIVE BAND EVER !!
@torbjrnlund9034 жыл бұрын
I agree. I saw them in Oslo in the seventies and they were incredible - the best live band I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot). Hide in your shell 'lifted the roof' so to say. It was a memory for life.

They are among my favorite bands, but it's a bit of a stretch to say that in the 1970s they were better than the Stones and the Who and Traffic and the Eagles and Steely Dan. Oh, um, yeah there was a group called Led Zeppelin too.

I used to play Crime of the Century from by bed. I had the turntable close enough to me so I could fall asleep listening to a record and wake up with the same record. I once misplaced the needle and scratched my worshipped copy of Crime of the Century. I immediately got up, I got a shower, from an old sock I took some money I had saved and run as fast as I could to the local record store to buy a new copy of the album. It was not only because of what Hide in Your Shell meant and means to me, as I love the whole album, but yes, there is something special about that song. There has to be when you know you are a big fan of the band and that song title comes out in the first place and right away when prompted to say which your favourite Supertramp song is. I basically feel the same as Roger about it and I also agree with other posts here, most of all Carissa Ciociola (Rissa) 's. When I first listened to Hide in Your Shell I was totally cocooned, I had lots of problems at home, very especially with my father, and I was definitely reaching out. I was also shocked to see how so many people around me were throwing away their talent and their potential and how they were unable to see beyond themselves and even inside themselves. A couple of George Harrison songs were also like my Bible then, namely While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Within You, Without You. I suppose my heart, my soul, needed some answers and these words contained the message that seems secret when you are a teenager. Funnily, when I was lucky enough to witness a Supertramp gig, Madrid, July 1983, I had the same feeling when I saw the video on display at the beginning of the concert, the one with the tightrope walker who falls down after someone cut the rope. "I won't let anyone do this to me again", I said to myself. And that's how it has been, through the thick and thin, through loss, through other people's addictions, through memories, through loyalty and treason, through disbelief, through magic, through life. Thank you, Roger. And thank you too for the unforgettable handshake after the unforgettable gig in Vigo a few years ago. I just hope someone recorded that The Moon Says Hello and Time Waits for No One that you played with Carlos Núñez that night.

Love this song, and the performance is very emotional for me."Hide in Your Shell", is exactly what I did when my life fell apart, the more I realized what was going on around me, the more it became more and more complicated everyday. Trying to explain it became impossible for me,almost to the point of unbelievable. Which lead to mental health issues and family abandonment. So I guess what I'm saying is when no-one believes in you,you doubt yourself and keep to yourself, cause nobody wants to hear what you have to say anyway.I'd find myself curled up in the fetal position trying to understand it all myself.just like hiding in a shell, so to speak.
