Thank you for posting this. I'm a Rogers, and I always thought my paternal Norman line were just brutal. Glad some were educated.

THE AVOCATION OF A MAN DESIROUS OF A FULL KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD - known simply as the "Book of Roger" is a book of 12-th century attemp at global knowledge, written by a court scholar, not only notes that the "earth is round", but also proclaims with equal assurance that some Nowegians are born without necks. Ref: Essay by Howard La Fay 1976

Interesting. I have aboriginal Sicilian, italic, Ancient Greek and Roman ancestry. I guess our people met in the old world. So hi

@@igniohealingbringeroftruth9254 Your comment makes no sense. *All* Sicilians can claim that ancestry and there are no records to prove the quatities of each as those various conquests predate modern geneological records. Si tu l'hai davvero sangue Siculo, dimmilo in nostro dialetto. Masano', vai fatti i cazzi tuoi.

Both father & son permitted the Saracen's sophisticated civilization to thrive beside Norman and Byzantine cultures.

Im a 65 year old American/Swedish retiree who moved to Sicily 2 years ago. This is a very special island and basically what’s left of the old Italy. That’s old in a recent context, of course. 😂 Anyways I spend half of my time here on a motorcycle visiting as many historical sites as possible. So mush to see and so little time left.

There are several points you made that are not true. 🤔 Roger II of Sicily did not go on a crusade not because he 'was tolerant'. You mentioned that he basically conquered muslim lands in North Africa. Most rulers in lands with muslim populations like Christian states in Iberia or crusader states in Levant were tolerant of muslim, Jewish and non-Latin subjects. Norman conquest of Sicily in 11th century was actually also sanctioned by the pope and a proto-crusade. Roger II was actually in conflict with rulers of Jerusalem as Bladwin I dismissed his mother Adelaide. 1100s is a period of the European Renissance of the 12th century. Greek and Arab texts were begginig to be studied all over Europe, in part due to crusades. There was big translation movement in Spain, in France there was a peak of humanist School of Chartes, and in Italy the medical School of Salerno. There were English intellectualls like Adelard of Bath or John of Salisbury or Slavic like Herman of Carinthia or Wincenty Kadłubek. Universities like in Oxford, Paris or Padua were created in 12th century. The learning in Western world was definetly not limited to Sicily and began to thrive. 🤷♂️
