Philosopher and writer Roger Scruton spent some time at Regent in May talking about beauty. A visiting professor at Oxford and part-time professor at the University of St. Andrews, Roger Scruton has written over forty books including numerous works on aesthetics, art, and beauty. He has also published three novels, a collection of shorter stories, and two operas.

Currently studying design (specifically interior and furniture design) at a very “liberal” university and about 95% of my peers design not with beauty in mind but with the intention to shock people and/or try to be some revolutionary. Unfortunately these are exactly the people that get praised and put on pedestals and considering one of my lecturers this semester made a chair in all white fabric but stained with period blood where it would be if one was sitting unprepared for such an event, I’m not expecting excellent marks for standing my ground in defence of beauty but so be it.

Roger Scrotum said beauty was important but he was uglier than someone beating his own mother. Typical attitude of a conservative right-wing moron.

@@Pinky.Meerkat The act of intentionally misinterpreting an argument and making ad hominem attacks are typical far-right tactics (apart from spreading fake news). Steve Bannon, Donald Trump and Olavo de Carvalho do this daily. And by coincidence, there are three exponents of the political-ideological field of the late Mr. Scrotum.

Rich people can own beautiful things, so leftist thought sees them as tainted, just as the Puritans did. There is also the fetish of novelty: better to have something new, even if one can't make it lovely, than something traditional and pleasing. This is part of the loss of simplicity in the worlds of art, architecture, and 'serious' music. Where things are completely new, we pursue beauty unabashedly--but the beauty of a car or motorcycle is dimmed by the sheer number of them, and the destruction of nature for their sake, as well as being, for most people, an incidental quality. A Jaguar is of a lower order of aesthetics than a Donatello.

IDK man, at least visually, an old Jaguar is on par with any classic work.

It’s possible for the humblest person if they have control over their environment to bring beauty to it. In many parts of the world where there is a working class that has lived in villages for a long time a beautiful environment has developed. In the Uk for example a garden culture developed from the practical farming and cottage gardens which grew food (and still do) but also flowers, trees and plants with a vernacular practical architecture that people generally find very attractive and charming. I am not trying to romanticize abject poverty which is another thing entirely, but just demonstrate that given the stability and opportunity almost all people will try to make their environment more beautiful in various ways. It’s not just down to having the wealth to afford certain expensive beautiful objects.
