Sir Roger Scruton on Intellectuals, Conservatism and President Trump

For many in both Kent and Talbot Counties, Washington College professor Joseph Prud’homme has been a very visible presence in bringing both communities unique public programming in his role as the Director of the Institute for the Study of Religion, Politics, and Culture. So while it wasn't too surprising that he invited Sir Roger Scruton to Chestertown yesterday, but that doesn't mean it's not a big thing. It is.
The reason being is that Scruton is one of those rare endangered species commonly called a conservative intellectual. Similar to America's late William F. Buckley, Jr., Sir Roger has reached a similar cultural status in Great Britain for his controversial writing on politics as well as art and music.
The Spy couldn't resist the opportunity to chat with Mr.Scruton at the Brompton Inn a few hours before his campus visit to talk about a variety of subjects including what many consider to be a war against intellectualism in this country. Sir Roger also shares his thoughts on how the conservative label may also be at risk as the Trump presidency refines the concept itself.

I'm looking at his condition and can see he should not have died. Bad on his medical doctors. Anyway, what a shame there is not more viewership. This fellow makes academia honorable when, in fact, mainly it no longer is. Bless his heart.

I've enjoyed some of his videos but when I read about how he has propandized for big tobacco and carried out other nefarious activities I can't respect him. It is indeed very sad that there seems no room for people who criticize the excesses of the way in which social justice, initially a laudable aim, has completely, it seems invaded the humanities. At least one archaeology department I know has attempted to divorce itself from the rest of Anthropology, because it is so controlled by dogma. I am so glad I became a biologist, learning how to test hypotheses with empirical evidence, use statistics, and understand scientific paper. I guess I should be glad I don't swallow all that the extreme left has done, and the damage done by post-modernism. His opposition ot it initially made me impressed by Jordan Peterson until I began to read and hear the utter nonsense he produced trying to falsify Anthropogenic Climate Change, misinterpreting the role of serotonin and so on.

It doesn't disappoint me, what you said about Peterson. His performance is obvious. I am disappointed about what you've said about Scruton, though. His performance actually has me believing academia can be salvaged. Sigh...
