Thanks Roger. Very informative, showing not only the tram extension, but also highlighting Leith Walk to Newhaven. Hopefully, Leith Walk will benefit, showing there's more to Edinburgh than just the Centre/Haymarket/Royal Mile/Castle!

Thanks Alan! I was really struck once again at the magnificence of Leith Walk - it’s been hidden for so long by roadworks that I’d forgotten! Hopefully now it can prosper again! 😀

Leith Walk, the Shore and the area in general constitute a treasure trove of discovery for the curious, though as with many of lesser prolific attractions in Edinburgh the locals tend to not notice, though the influx of students and creeping gentrification are adding a fresh sense of energy that will hopefully rejuvinate the place once the trams are complete. Also, the Red Sandstone was targeted for demolition to accommodate student flats but was saved by public outcry. It is an iconic block. On a personal note, my in-laws lived way up top of the former Prudential Building, the tower-like roof of which juts above you in the opening frames - a fab location. And my daughter worked with a business located to your front and a couple doors left in those very same frames. My band rehearsed in the Playhouse and I worked down Leith Walk. Videos like this not only keep me in touch with the present, the keep me in touch with my past. Thank you.

Wow thanks for that! Rehearsing in the Playhouse must have been awesome. I worked in St Andrew Sq for 15 years in the old Scottish Provident building - which was knocked down and rebuilt a few years back. Glad to have brought back some memories! 😀

@@RogEdwardsTV You mention the Provi buiding being demolished. Well, when we were rehearsing at the Playhouse (mid '75), the dressing rooms were all being stripped back to the bare walls - something was going on. One day the owner showed up and he was not happy: the Council had denied his application to demolish the Playhouse and put an office block in its place. We suggested he bring in bands, giving him the names for management for Yes and for Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdinck. And that is what he did. Though I curse some of the Council's decisions, they got that one right.

Ha! Fascinating. Last concert I saw at The Playhouse was Bryan Adams who was doing a warm up gig for a stadium tour. Saw Mike and the Mechanics at the Usher Hall a few weeks ago. Fabulous. Thanks for your memories. 🎸

It's pretty spectacular. There was a moment when I was stood in the middle of the road when I realised I'd forgotten what it looked like without roadworks. It's been so long!

Hiya ! We are coming to Edinburgh in April of 2024 and staying in New Haven . Thanks for the video ! Do you recommend a day trip to York England ? I want to see The Shambles. How you recommend we get there ? Thank you ...Terry
@RogEdwardsTV
@RogEdwardsTV Жыл бұрын
Hi Terry! York is a fabulous city and you can get to it from Edinburgh by train. It takes about 3 hours though so you might want to consider staying overnight so you have more time to explore. There’s so much more in York than the Shambles so I’d aim for a full day there at least! Hope you enjoy your trip to Edinburgh - please do ask more questions! 😀

Excellent - full marks to you for a first-class and informative video. I have always been interested in seeing more about the final stretch of the tramline down to Leith; there are several KZbin videos that features just pictures of trams - but without references to interesting and important locations on the route. The birth of the Edinburgh tram system has followed a long and painful gestation period - but it has arrived at last. One hopes that affected businesses will recover in time; I used to live in Croydon where the upheaval seemed never-ending.

Thanks so much for your kind comment. I do find trams fascinating. The existing leg of the Edinburgh Tram runs mainly off street so it’s not really possible to make an equivalent (or interesting) video. Cheers! 😀

@@RogEdwardsTV Hi Roger, yes, I'm by the Pacific Ocean with an Island in between the main Ocean called Vancouver Island. I live in Vancouver, British Columbia where I moved at 10 1/2, June '75. What I really miss is the history in Edinburgh. Edinburgh had really changed when I went back in 2007 to show my son his roots. I also forgot about Newhaven harbor as it was a whirlwind tour and we saw the highlands, along with a quick trip to Paris and Belfast. I saw that the old Leith docks were also gone too and don't know how Newhaven Harbour slipped my mind. It looks like it hasn't changed a bit. I remember a lot of the ruined buildings around as a kid, thinking they were just houses that had fallen down, not realizing that they hadn't finished cleaning up from WWII. There were some old railroad tracks besides Victoria Park that led to an old mill that was knocked down. My sisters and I had a lot of fun exploring back then.

@@RogEdwardsTV I'm glad you and the wife enjoyed your time here. Things were much better here 20 years ago too economically. Thanks once again for that great video. I shall return. I would love to take a picture of me, my son and grandson sitting by the lighthouse. I have a great picture from the late 60's sitting on a bench in Selkirk. Half the picture was with my mom, dad, grandma and the kids, the other half is me and my son sitting in the same bench 32+ years later. God bless you and your loved ones Roger 🙏

For about the last 6 months, for passengers, the trams terminate at St Andrews Sq and they have to disembark (or board there). The empty tram then goes on to what used to be the York Place stop but only to use the cross over track to then return to St Andrew Sq. 😀
