I haven't watched all your videos yet, but I think this is one of my favorites. I love how you compared and contrasted the plants and talked about what traits they got from their parent...very interesting. I could have watched that for another hour easy. I didn't realize I was commenting as Clock Man...I usually comment as myself, Matthew Condon.

Great chat! Sorry about the Miltoniopsis roezlii - what a beautiful bloom! Such a shame for the plant to go down like that. I would have thought Zygo’s would be on your ‘most difficult’ list. I have two that are not doing as well as I first thought. New growths undersized but starting yet another one each... My Miltoniopsis Herr Alexandre lost all its roots after repotting a couple of months ago so I stuck its 3 skinny bulbs and sickly new growth in a tiny pot with sphagnum moss and hoped for some new roots. With the summer really kicking in I wasn’t hopeful but it’s got lots of new roots and two new growths! Long may it continue to be so vigorous! The temps have been 25C up to 30 for a couple of weeks now but down to 15 overnight - I guess that is keeping its average in a tolerable place. It’s getting quite high light I must say - up there with my nobile...how can you tell if it’s getting too much light? It has those silvery green leaves maybe a little paler than your hybrid in the video.

A good video Roger. My experience with the oncidium alliance is that, brassias really love water. They hate to dry out. Also when it come to name the type from how many leaves is on the top of the pseudobulbs, there are always a but! Miltonia Phymatochila only have 1 leave, and the color of the plant is olive green. The pseudobulbs are also different. The are almost circular. And slow groweing.

Shame about the roezlii, we all know how fond of the yellow ones you are. Some time last year some Colombian nursery imported a large number of them to the US which they sold on to several american orchid nurseries, so there's been quite a few available here the past few months. I managed to get one with 5(!) spikes on it at a show in early November. Very nice fragrance, but a slooooow grower. Hopefully the nursery that produced mine decides to take some to the UK so you can replace the poor one you lost!

There is a South American company that sells it and they bring loads of plants each year to the EU to take round the shows. But all their orchids have to be bare-rooted for export. I doubt this one would live like that for long.

Wonderful and educational video Roger. I tend to stay away from those spidery orchids. Not because I simply don't like spiders, but I don't do well with them. Actually oncidium types are difficult for me, especially growing outside. I think they are kind of finicky, and most are sold growing in sphagnum moss. Ugh......
@sinine1100
@sinine1100 4 жыл бұрын
Goes to show how different people's environments are! They're the easiest for me (unless I get them already sick from the flower shop ... I think they just over-water them there, and then they have NO roots). I'm in similar "inside climate" as Roger, I believe. So it's the cool/cold types and phals that are trickier for me.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 4 жыл бұрын
The main thing with Oncidiums is to keep healthy roots - allow to dry in between watering when not growing much and keep well watered when actively growing. So many over here are sold with very poor root systems that people get put off as the losses are high.

I've had one since February 2019. I've been tearing my hair out with it lol but after way too many repots in such a short space of time, I'm hoping I've finally got it right and it will be OK now. I've made many mistakes but if this one dies, I'm getting another as I just love them. So in answer to your question, yes... I would try again if you think you can identify what the problem was. Maybe it was just a weak plant and nothing you could've done would help. One more try definitely 😁😁.

Very interesting Roger, thank you for sharing. I have an Odontocidium Wildcat ''Bobcat'' -(that's on the label) its in the Oncidium types but I find names as Odontocidium, Colmanara and Oncostele …...all Wildcat Bobcat- very confusing - Odontocidium is supposed to be a cross between Odontoglossum and Oncidium - but Colmanara is Miltonia,odontoglossum and Oncidium - and Oncostele is Oncidium and Rhynchostele ………...a bit to much for me lol lol - any simple explanation?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 4 жыл бұрын
The names are meaningful when first devised - but if you think that most of the Odontoglossums have been re-classified as Oncidiums, it will just make a joke of some of the names. There are also quite a few Oncidiums that have been moved too. (The 'Wildcats' have some good plants - Cheetah is a good one.)

Good morning Roger, what have you to say about Twinkles and their environment? I noticed yours our mounted and are doing very well ...lovely. Please share your advice before I kill mine! I ordered online and they sent me a seedling. You suggested I keep it in moss. It has grown some but seems to have stalled. Also, looks like on one of it's tiny bulbs has a brown area. I hope it's not rot. I try to water it carefully. I had to toss my other Oncidium because I tested it and was positive for Cym virus. If my Twinkle dies I am done with Oncidiums for a while and will stick with Phalaenopsis !

How is the no smoking going? I’m sorry about your one plant, I was really hoping it would pull through. I have a question, what do you do when you have orchids (oncidium types) that want to climb out of the pot? I’m never sure how to repot them, you either end up burying the old pseudobulbs, or leave the new ones hanging over the media? I’m worried that the buried pseudobulbs will rot?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 4 жыл бұрын
The 'climbing' Oncidium types are difficult. One way is to adjust the media - start with the plant low in the pot and as the new growths push away, add more media in that area. Older bulbs can end up below the media so use something like large bark in that area so it doesn't stay wet long and has plenty of air.

Bought a Bratonia Toscane last year (laaarge yellow spider blooms, intense scent --> floral with a strong hint of wood). It's okayish in size. Needs a repot because it's still in this coco crap from the vendor. Desperately need one of those twinkles, tho. The one orchid that looks the worst by far in my collection - surprise surprise - it's a Miltoniopsis. It's just remnants of bulbs with three tiny new growths that decided to stall. Horrible plant if you buy it and think you got a Miltonia (because it's written on the label) and treat it as such.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai 4 жыл бұрын
'Technically', Miltoniopsis are actually Miltonias but as they come from a different part of the world and have a different culture, the 5 or 6 species were given their own Genera - at least one is now extinct in the wild - maybe two?
