yeh, ifyou put the work into it, taking pics from greyscale is so much easier than buying lol, however the devil is in the details. I haven't learned aertcam yet so I'm curious, thank you for your time Its suprising(not really if you think about ppl selling the reliefs) that there aren't more of these tutorials. so once again thank you

Great video! I do have one question i'm doing the same picture that your showing and at 14:37 you click on the 3D tab. When I click on the 3d tab it just just shows the blank gold sheet no dimension to it? Did I miss a step here? thx

Great video roger, as always. But I feel I got lost somewhere here. One, my toolbars aren't set up as nice as yours with all the available options and icons, so i'm fumbling around to find them, but no problem. I can get by. I did follow this tutorial exactly, and for whatever reason, when I get to the end and I am calculating, my relief file is still in a 3d style, but it's looks like it sits on top, rather than recessed in. Have you ever run into that before? Or do you have any tips as to what I may have done wrong?

The problem only Alpha Height Grayscale image. There is no software can automatically make it perfect (including Crazybump, etc). Still need art taste from human resourse if you want "an easy way" to make relief.

There is no software to convert to 100% 3D grayscale ( I had wasted lot of time ) only way is to model first and then convert to grayscale

Thank you for your quick reply . Yes , I spent a lot of time also trying to find an almost easy way . The purpose is to use them in Zbrush as alphas , customised clients portraits on medals .

Model first then use ArtCam or ZBrush to turn them into a grayscale relief, no other way. You can turn them into a grayscale relief only with one click.

As of July 7, 2018, Autodesk ArtCAM has been discontinued. Is there away that I can get a copy of artcam software, download links so I can follow along with you. This way there won't be any mistakes.

Hey, Roger. When I clicked on this video I was truly hoping you were going to show us how to make a 3D image from a gray scale photo. NOPE!!! All you did was what most of the youtubers out there do when it comes to the 1,000 plus 3D tutorials. You took an already made 3D image, plugged it into a CNC router and let it do all the work. I think what we all want to learn is how to take a photo and turn it into the 3D gray scale image like the one you started with. Forget the routing for a while. Just make a 3D image.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. And the image appears to be a 3d Depth Map from an Actual 3d Model. Not just someart or photograph one googles. It was already set up for CNC relief engraving or 3d Printing. Its a little misleading.
