This was a brutally honest and in-depth review from a true fan's perspective. I hope Teyon watches this video and takes notes. I'd pay for some dlc like their Terminator game got + some multiplayer with different color Robocops, RoboCains, & ED-209s. They should also tweak the cutscenes and npc animations and add New Game+ in a free update. Otherwise, I really like this game and this review was spot-on + thorough. The Auto-9 firing/holstering sounds in-game bother me quite a bit and I hope they fix it as the general audio in this game sounds fantastic. The game also needs a dedicated button for spinning your pistol/equipped weapon like the movies + Terminator: Redemption way back 😎👍 .... oh yeah and more dismemberment.

@@TexasHollowEarth I would be glad just for the accurate movie sound of the Auto-9 firing. Thats a biggest mistake in my opinion. Its interesting that from the sound perspective they nailed the RoboCop voice with the original, legendary actor Peter Weller, but somehow they absolutely ruined the sound of RoboCop iconic gun. Perhaps that it could be easily patched, but who knows when its already out, I think they wont change it, but if they do that. . that would be truly enhanced experience.

The whole game feels like a love letter to Robocop, both as a character and a franchise. Them getting the original actors to reprise their roles, the soundtrack, the way Robocop himself feels to control and the general dystopian feel of the world is just *perfect* They could have made a minimal effort cashgrab, but instead they gave us, in my opinion, the unofficial Robocop 4 the character deserved. If theres one thing this developer is good at, its nailing the vibe of the source material. Terminator Resistance got a lot of bad reviews, but Terminator fans loved it because it FELT like they were dropped into the war against the machines that was shown in brief scenes in the first 2 movies. The gameplay didnt reinvent the wheel, but as a Terminator game, they nailed it.

Just a quick note of the "Dash" it feels like they were inspired by how RoboCop semi sprinted in the OG, when Emil was trying with the truck to push him in the toxic waste, RoboCop sprints a bit quickly to get out of the way, I believe Teyon saw that and used it as inspiration for the "Dash" move.

1. Just being seen with a candidate counts as supporting him. You have to ignore them completely if you don't want to support them. Talking to them is optional after all. 2. The rights to RoboCop unfortunately do not include the rights to the iconic sounds. I don't remember the source, but those sounds are part of a sound library that would have cost them additional $30.000 and they probably didn't have the budget for this. 3. Why do you say that you love roleplaying as Murphy/RoboCop, but then complain about actual roleplaying elements?

I feel like with this one and their Terminator game, you feel the low budget, and I don't think they're the best writing team. However they get the atmosphere right and they get the designs of the world and the characters right, even if NPCs look like last gen character models. There's always enough effort into making things feel like they are part of that franchise and part of that world, they are crafted with the kind of care that people who actually enjoy these franchises would put into it. I also like that they're making a style of first-person shooter that you don't really see anymore, something reminiscent of the early 2000s when shooters were really narrative focused and you could do things like have downtime where you talked to people and fleshed out story and characters. These days shooters are still either modern military stuff, battle royals, or a bunch of throwback retro shooters that feel more like early doom and Duke nukem with no focus on story and only focusing on combat. This game is a nice mix. I just once again don't feel like the writing is all that great. Fun game for fans, I don't recommend paying 60 bucks for it though, but grabbing it on a sale price is going to get your money's worth
@JustFun-ho6qy Жыл бұрын
Don't even thing their characters look particularly last-gen. There's tons of details to almost all of them. They are just animated so poorly. What the team lacked was simply the budget for proper facial animations and cut-scene choreography. They really half-assed trying to replicate Phil Tippet's work from Robocop 2. It comes across a little sad as a result. Sad when it clearly wanted to look badass.

This is the best Rogue City review on KZbin. You summed up my thoughts pretty much perfectly. Those open exploration areas where you can't dash kill pacing, and I haven't seen anybody else mention this. I think this was a good effort but I overall think a better Robocop game can be made. I think you HAVE to go with third person shooting. Robocop is simply too iconic of a design for first person. First person also doesn't allow you to see how COOL Robo looks during combat. I think some sort of Red Dead style slow-mo lockon would look really great in third person. You'd be able to see him independently aim his gun away from his body to shoot bad guys to the left and the right. Robo also needs to crouch. Pretty much positive he has crouched in the movies. I would LOVE if we had the ability to drive Robo's patrol car throughout the city to stop crimes and perhaps to upgrade the car as time goes on (better acceleration, handling, nitro boost, armored doors and windows, etc.). Imagine how awesome it would be to DRIVE to a mission yourself. You drive across old Detroit and happen upon Clarence's gang blowing up the city. You get out of your car and start mowing them down. Civilians are running everywhere and you have to be careful not to shoot them. I think a future Robo game needs MUCH more destruction. I definitely agree with you about running through the walls. We needed more of that but also just general micro-destruction. We can throw computer monitors but if we shoot the desks or chairs nothing happens. We can shoot out lights but the bad guys still see fine. The windows in the high rise buildings are indestructible. Imagine how badass it would be to grab a bad guy by the throat and throw him through a high-rise window and hear him scream on the way down. Just thinking out loud, but some kind of Devil May Cry-esque score multiplier might be cool for combat. A headshot chain into a nutshot for a multiplier into an environmental kill into melee, etc. I think Robo's gun twirl needed better prominence as a mechanic. In my third-person idea above maybe he would twirl the gun from his holster to initiate the slow-mo lock-on sequence. The infinite ammo, I'm not sure about. The problem is that the Auto-9 is special and badass in the movies. But in the game, you have it the entire time. So I think it loses some of its specialness just from familiarity. Might've been cool to give Robo the mag in the gun plus like 4 spare mags in his other leg. Let him refill the ammo mid-mission somehow. Maybe he has an ammo case in the trunk of his patrol car in my third-person idea. Or just let him run over bad guys for ammo. I legit beat the first Ed-209 by headglitching a piece of cover and shooting NONSTOP for about 4 minutes. It felt cheesy to do that but the game design didn't stop me. I think there might be something to making the Auto-9 even more powerful than it already is but limit its ammo somehow. Or perhaps give Robo a shit ton of normal ammo but give him limited quantities of Armor Piercing or incendiary ammo. I do also agree that Weller's performance here is pretty phoned in. It felt like whoever was directing him was scared to tell him what to do. The emotion from the first movie just isn't there. Weller actually passionate and committed to the performance would have lifted the game so much more, but at least he read the lines. Lots of rambling in different directions here but wanted to get my thoughts out before bed. TLDR: Give me open-world 3rd person Robocop and let me drive the patrol car and see Robocop's model the whole time :)

As a huge Robocop fan like you, (it is also my favourite film of all time). When I heard about the developing of this game I was so excited, and even tho I saw those lil defects that the game has, it didnt matter much for me, becouse playing as Murphy, shooting like him, the original lines, the huge detail that the developers who really love the saga put into this game made my inner child yell of excitement everytime. Like you exploring the city was sometimes dull becouse of Robocop's pace, but it was worth of hearing the ost of the movies going in crescendo in the combat, man that was fkn great. The thing I personally hated most, is something you spoke here and in your movies videos. The excesive mechanical voice of Murphy, its ok to have the robotical effect in the voice, but the perform should be more human, not that mechanical or robotical. Anyway I think I agree most with you, I had a super great time with this game, and something in me now is in peace becouse of being able to play such a good shooting game of Robocop.

On my third playthrough right now ... Can't believe how satisfying and enjoyable the experience is for me as a huge fan of the original movie. I actually love the ED-209 fights - sure the first one is pretty straightforward, but there is a very quick and satisfying way to kill the ED that's rampaging through the streets in the final stages of the game ... [SPOILER] There's a rooftop sniper in the area, accessible by a ladder, with a Cobra assault cannon waiting for you to pick up. You can then take out the ED-209 in a very satisfying single shot (or maybe two), just like Murphy does in the movie when he's on his way to the final confrontation with Dick Jones. Put a big, nostalgic smile on my face. Yeah, I see that the game has flaws - but it gets so many things right that those flaws just don't bother me too much.

Teyon is in an interesting spot, they have made the best games in Terminator and Robocop franchises by staying small and contained. Just a regular story and allright mechanics, nothing very special. At the same time these efforts are far better than anyhting else produced in the franchises for a long time. If they don't get greedy and keep honing their craft they'll have a great future, they clearly get the vibe they need to go for with these sort of nostalgia pieces.

Great video Mayo! You're dead on about the pacing of the open world segments, especially if the player is doing all of the serve and protect missions. I probably spent an hour on each one, wandering around to find the random crimes in the city. The only open world sections I thought worked were the first one, due to the fact that the novelty of robocop just doing mundane tasks was still there, and the last one where you had to fight through the city to get to each of the side objectives. One thing I'd like to add is that Sgt. Reed's VA was very hard to read emotionally. I always had a hard time telling if he was supposed to be angry or enthusiastic. On the more spoiler warning side of things, Wendell Antonowski started out a really interesting character in my eyes. His demeanor towards robocop in the 2/3 of the game I found really interesting, almost treating robocop as an old friend, despite Murphy having killed his brother. This all fell apart though, when it was revealed that he wasn't actually Emil's brother and instead just some OCP operative. This left him as just some random guy with no connection to the protagonist. After that I lost all interest in the character and felt basically nothing when he died. Overall, the game was pretty damn good, but had some blemishes that hurt the experience a bit. Under the Yamo review of Robocop 2014?

That's interesting that inaction makes you choose a political option. It's almost like the game is arguing what it's anarchist roots would suggest, that political inaction is actually a supporting vote for the status quo. Also if they do a 2nd game, they need to see this video. All your points are so strong. Although i do think a rail shooter might make this more fun but i dunno may be a bad take....

I vividly remember playing Robocop 3 on my Atari back in the day. The 3D graphics blew me away. I'm happy to see a worthy new game for the franchise!

Just platinumed the game, personally I like it alot. But you are abusolutely right on the AUTO-9 sound, I'm so upset about it, and they got the muzzle flash wrong too... Also, although personally I can turn a blind eye on most of the cons you mentioned due to budgetary reasons, I just can not get over Murphy's mo-cap, I know the dev probably didn't have the resources nor time to recreate the brilliant Moni Yakim/Nikolay Cherkasov-ish movenments, but the actual mo-cap was just so bad, felt like a clumsy attempt to copy the original.

Yesterday I was thinking about UTM and how well he discussed Doom Eternal, and then boom! a Robocop Rogue City review. Awesome.

Thank you for recommending this game. I would never buy it, because I am not fan of Robocop, and my knowledge of TV series is based on few memories when I was 5 y. o. and parents were watching it when they have nothing else to watch. I was pretty doubtful even after your review. But game was totally worth it. I wasn't expecting this game quality level from small game studio.

I just rewatched Robocop this past weekend. A film that will always be a classic and stand the test of time. Just watching reviews of the game of other Yts it really does feel they tried to pay respects to the movie franchise and not adding things that arent Robocop or changing the lore for a more "Modern Audience".

Love this game so much. Mad respect to the game designers and publisher that kept to some of Robocops style and themes. Sometimes you a simple fun game, in this AAA gaming hellscape

Love this game, played it twice! Only problem I had was sometimes when I’m playing the gameplay can get a little wonky and then the game shuts off and have to start again. Also the voice over sometimes doesn’t match their mouths . 14:34 so true , half of the time I give up on the Side missions

I am so glad that this game did that well and hope for a sequel AND maybe some sort of open world or "more open world" - for just random walks and catching robbers. Not much, but like... you´re walking and someone is grabbing a purse and you just arrest him and then nothing happens for 5 or 10 mins. Just being RC. Damn. I kinda also hope for a Jurassic Park game from those devs. They are amazing.

I know a lot of players find the dash move odd for robocop to perform but come on man he totally used that maneuver when Emil tried to run him over in the first movie 😂

I love this game. Sure it has some issues, but getting to be RoboCop and mowing down "creeps" with the Auto-9 (which sounds absolutely amazing) is just good fun. It's like playing in an unreleased movie from the time. When shooting the main gun is so much fun that you willingly go back to the firing range several times over the gameplay, should tell you something. This might seem like a generic shooter, but if that's the case, then I haven't seen a "generic shooter" for a very long time. It's a simple, yet good single player game that fans of RoboCop will definitely love.

I've loved Robocop since I saw it the first time when I was 5 lol!! This is Soo cool! But I agree on the Auto9 sound, wonder if it's a copyright thing? Also I get what you said about it looking kinda cheap. I REALLY hope this studio gets the resources they deserve, and when they do I can wait to see what they make next!!

You’ve gone in to this with the heavy bias of seeing robocop purely as Murphey, whereas the game gives you the choice to see him at either Robocop or Murphey. Kind of comes off as disingenuous in that criticism. Also hard disagree with the data spike thing. It is NOT a weapon. Having the ability to use it as such would be silly. Sure maybe in a cutscene as an homage, but not in standard gameplay

I took a risk and got it day one, off of John from DFs recommendation, I’m on series x but all being said it’s an awesome game, I actually get excited when I find hidden evidence or chip set peices or whatever, all the little things all add up for me, to make a fairly mid shooter into something truly special, beyond the fan service, the tickets on random cars, all that type little stuff. And the combat never gets old, count me in.

I do believe the story goes the auto9 sound effect was too costly for a somewhat small game creator..

Got this for Christmas and I couldn't put it down, agreed it has some issue but overall it's fantastic and does immerse you in the Robocop world. When I first played it and the iconic music came on it just washed me over with nostalgia and made the hairs on my neck go. If you love Robocop you have to play it. The boss fights are too long though and killing ED209 just drags out wayyyyy to long, but it was a great playthrough and most importantly it was fun!

This was one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences in recent memory. It's rife with Playstation 2 style graphics hiccups and background character voiceover isnt the best, but that kind of all melts away because it compels you forward with the gameplay and story. Frankly, I hated everything about max becker that didnt have to do with writing. His character model barely emoted, and neither did his voice, but he was integral to the story. That character is a perfect example of the game's flaws, especially when contrasted by Robocop who's usually in the same scene as him. That's the thing developers need to understand; the game doesn't have to be Delta City to be good. Your game can still be flawed on an artistic or development level, and still be loved. If you guys love it, the people who play it will. This felt like the spiritual successor to RoboCop 3 that we should've gotten.

I saw RoboCop in the theater back when it released, I would have been 17 at the time. For some reason I didn't much like the movie, not exactly sure why. So after buying this game I figured I'd watch the movie again to refresh my memory, and see whether it still stands up. So many 80s films just don't. Not only does it stand up beautifully, but I liked it way more now than I did when it released. In fact, it somewhat amazes me that a cheesy 80s sci-fi action film can be so much better written and better shot than most anything Hollywood has done in a decade or more. Great stuff. As to the game, more or less I thought the shooter parts were a blast, but the "RPG" parts were a bore. Maybe someone thought spending half an hour having Robo chasing down a runaway cat would be funny, I thought it was a waste of my time. While I can appreciate taking a break from the action to do a little world and character building, these "walk here and do this" missions were mostly stupid filler. But then, most of those were optional missions, so not really too big of a deal. But the shooter parts were a blast. Not exactly the most sophisticated FPS mechanics, but I thought it worked great for the material and was a ton of fun.

Regarding some fx sounds in the game, I believe it is because of copyright, however, and thanks to the excellent modder community that exists, it is now possible to have the sound of Auto 9, Classic Step SFX, classic Targeting SFX and the twirling and holstering the Auto 9. Long live the Modder Community!

I think this game is a solid 8/10, is far from perfect, but man, I've seen duds being released recently and this game in both gameplay and presentation really deliver, and I really love the attention to detail, love and respect for the source material, because talking about Robocop 2, they could've pulled a "politically correct" Robocop thing, and just do sanitized version of the story and world, by also doing some Doom like gameplay because "that's what people like" kind of mentality. But a game where they look to be as close as the originals in tone and style and also doing a gameplay that lets you play with this tank of a man, slow but precise, it's just amazing, and coming from the people who made the Rambo game, good to see developers actually improving instead of doing things worse.
