Watching in chronological order ruins the first 3 movies though, you know all the plot twists. Plus the special effects can remove you from the story, because you already seen what it evolved into as the technology got better. For example: Going from CGI Yoda to puppet Yoda doesn’t work.

My favorite thing about this movie are the backgrounds of the rebels. A reluctant leader, a lifelong fighter, an imperial defector, a pair of obsolete guardians, a reprogrammed droid: they all had different motives for joining the fight, yet all were willing to give everything to keep hope alive for the rebellion. It adds so much depth to the resistance.

A lot of reacters don't seem to give him much thought, and sometimes even skip his death scene, but I've always had a big soft spot for him because he's the only one there with no fighting skill, and he's still risking his life along with the rest of them to do what he feels is right, to make up for a lifetime of not questioning if just going along with the status quo was wrong. He's the character most of us would most realistically be in the Star Wars universe, and we should hope we would be as brave as him.

41:50 It's a highly secure cold storage vault for uncompressed backup data. Stuff like that exists today: data is stored off-site by companies and governments on massive rolls of magnetic tape, storing uncompressed (therefore lossless) raw data for a certain period. If you want a similar scene to this, check out the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Eraser. It prominently featured a StorageTek tape silo. For years people have been chuckling how they were talking about stolen data tapes in Episode IV, thinking they meant the small cassettes you'd load into a Commodore 64 or reels you'd have on old office mainframes. But no, tapes are still valid data storage, especially long-term uncompressed backups. Current tech can store 317 gigabytes per square inch, but I'm having trouble finding a figure for what's the more common density on the market currently. And the reels can be hundreds of feet long. So what's more sci-fi here is the speed of access on that tape. If they managed to transmit the entire tape to orbit, it would be God knows how many terabytes of data in seconds. And they stored it on a card no larger than an old driver's license. The magic of data compression.

My favourite description of Rogue One was Krennic's terrible experience in middle management. You go the extra mile to get the project completed, at which point your supervisor yanks it out from under you and takes the credit for it. And when you complain to human resources, they'd rather be lounging around in a bath than talk to you, and threaten you with firing for even bringing the issue up. Then you go the extra mile *again* to prevent a case of industrial espionage, at which point you get blasted by a superlaser.

Though the movie had a tragic ending, it was a great and seamless introduction and connection to Episode 4 "A New Hope," It also stood as a entertaining movie in its own right. I was particularly struck by the "deep fake" image and sound of Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin). The "cloned" performance and image of Peter Cushing was exact (though Cushing died in 1994). The technology was/is impressive. However, I felt Carrie Fisher's fake image wasn't quite as good, though she was still alive during the movie's filming and added her own voice to it..

Watching in timeline order is an interesting way to do it. Those of us who saw the originals in the theatre were shocked and pleasently surprised at the ending of Rogue One. However, as you pointed out before, there are things that surprise you differently when they're watched the way you're doing it. There's no right way or wrong way. Keep in mind though, the prequels, Rogue One and all the others were done with those of us who grew up with the originals first in mind. To answer so many questions we had after seeing the first three (4,5,6) and to throw in a few surprises that you don't get when you watch them in the order you are. When you're done with Return of the Jedi I'd be interested in hearing your perspective of the different ways. For me and others who saw the originals in the theatre, we had no choice what order to watch them.

I saw Rogue One in theaters, and let me tell you, Emme, it took me back to when I was 10 years old watching the original Star Wars in theaters during that third act. You're kinda going out of timeline order, since you're watching Clone Wars after Episode III, and the Kenobi series (which takes place 10 years prior to Rogue One), but that's okay. Andor (the upcoming series) begins 5 or 6 years prior to Rogue One, but it's good to be familiar with the character beforehand. From what we're told, the Andor series (slated to be 4 seasons long, as of right now), will cover the time frame leading up to Rogue One. So, in effect, it runs nearly concurrently to the "Rebels" animated series. None of this is considered spoilers, BTW. It just tells us where in the overall timeline that the series takes place. I'll try to help answer your questions, without spoiling things you haven't seen yet. 2:27 - No, Lyra is not a Jedi. However, that necklace she gives Jyn IS a Kyber crystal. At this point in the timeline, the Jedi have not only been pretty much wiped out, but the Empire has done the best they could to turn the general populous against the Jedi. Lyra is one of the Galactic Citizens who still believes in The Force, whereas most others consider it (and the Jedi) to be a myth because of the propaganda the Empire has been spreading. 3:22 - Lyra, like Galen, wanted to protect her family. She was willing to risk everything to prevent her husband from being "conscripted" back into the Empire. Just as Galen was willing to lie as well as sacrifice himself to Krennik to allow Lyra and Jyn to get away. 5:00 - Actually, there was a deleted sub-plot involving that "snoring" cellmate, where they despised one another. Since it didn't advance the plot, it was left on the cutting room floor. 6:09 - Cassian killed the informant, because the guy admitted that he couldn't climb out to safety, therefore, he would be captured by the Empire. Cassian knows full well that the Imperials have ways to make people talk. So, in order to prevent him from being captured and telling the Empire what he passed on (as well as who knows what other secrets he knows), Cassian killed him. In some ways, it was also a mercy killing, if you take into account the amount of torture he would have endured before spilling every secret he knew. 6:40 - They covered Bodhi's head so that he couldn't know exactly where the "hideout" is located. Also, yes, that was an ancient statue of a Jedi. Jedha (the planet) is where an ancient Jedi Temple is, where Padawans would be taken to locate the Kyber crystal that would go into their lightsabers. 7:57 - Just keep watching Clone Wars.... you'll find out. 8:42 - The "pro wrestling" term is "choke-slam". It's been around for years. ;) 9:00 - K2-SO, as you're going to find, is one snarky bastard. But he's absolutely hilarious! 10:06 - Saw has been fighting oppression for a very long time. He's been wounded many times, as you can see by his artificial feet. It would appear that his lungs have been injured as well, hence why he needs the oxygen apparatus. 14:12 - Remember that child.... 21:25 - Remember that child? She's dead now. Vaporized when the Death Star fired that shot. 22:35 - Saw was doomed, and he knew it. He opted to sacrifice himself, rather than everyone else. He knew there was no way he could move fast enough to get on the ship, so he told Jyn to "Save the dream! Save the Rebellion!". 2558 - K2-SO literally dry-snitching on Cassian. 39"43 - AT-AT. All Terrain Armoured Transport. 44:37 - Actually, climbing was likely one of the survival techniques that Saw trained her with. Remember, he raised her, taught her how to fight the Empire, and survive doing so. 51:50 - That "Vader Hallway Scene" wasn't originally in the script. It was a last-minute re-shoot filmed literally weeks before the movie was to be released. But yeah, Rogue One has so far been the best movie released in the "Disney" era of Star Wars. It leads directly into Episode IV (the original movie), and honestly makes for a great "double feature". I literally can't watch one without the other, at this point.

Saw Gerrera was a character who first appeared in The Clone Wars and has since appeared in other Star Wars films, tv series, and video games. During the Clone Wars, he and his sister Steela Gerrera were part of the Onderon Rebels, a group that was fighting a Separatist puppet government on Onderon. Steela was the elected leader, with Saw always being the passionate guy who went head first into fights. Since the end of the Clone Wars, Saw has continued to fight, now against the Empire. That being said, he is that freedom fighter who crossed the very thin line and became more of a terrorist. The Empire use Saw as propaganda against the Rebel Alliance. This film follows what I call the Clone Wars Rule - all characters who do not appear in the Original or Prequel films must be killed off for continuity. Notable exceptions include characters like Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex, though some argue Rex was in Return of the Jedi. While the characters at times can be forgettable, what makes this film and why people keep coming back is the Battle of Scarif. That is Bail Organa, Prince and Senator of Alderaan, and he was saying that he trusted Leia to go and get Obi-Wan Kenobi to help the Rebel Alliance.

11:11 People making the movies don't usually have the budgets to add a bunch of effects like that. The sky traffic on Coruscant being an exception. They DID have the budget for it.

When you see a franchise, the "Chronological Order" makes "more sense" because you can understand better...., but part of the magic is lost, IMHO the release order is always the best. As a reactor you will react to a different info that the rest of us had.

True but then I have seen few reactors do Chronological order and them be flabbergasted in scenes that us, who watched in release order weren't is always fun to watch. Magic is there, its just different but its there. I welcome anyone who wants Lightsaber, regardless of order they watched and played Star Wars :)

Rogue One is by fair the best movie in the entire franchise, the only one who really narrates how the war was instead of being a tragic opera about the skywalkers

This is, honestly, one of my favorite Star Wars movies (as an old-school SW fan XD... like, seriously, I grew up with the original trilogy, and was old enough to watch the prequels in High School). It is powerful and heartbreaking, and the worst thing is that the novelization (which they've made an outstanding audiobook recording of) is even MORE heartbreakingly beautiful! You get to experience the events on Scarif from each character's internal perspective. I won't say more than that; I just have to say that it is very much worth the read.

@@jeremyfrost2636 definitely won't argue there. I enjoyed the prequels as books, and I feel like they present the stories better than the movies do. But there's Zahn's Dark Force Rising trilogy, and I really love the x-wing books ^_^

@@Drake844221 Agreed on all counts. Joe Schreiber's zombie novels as well. And since Emme likes martial arts, she'd probably enjoy Shadows Of The Empire and Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter.

Chronological order no wonder you're not familiar with the Death Star and an AT-AT. So when you watch IV "A New Hope" pay particular attention to the crawl at the beginning.

16:55 the son of Ip Man, Ip Chun, is still alive, he's in his 90s but he is still really sharp in his mind and really good at Kung Fu. There's an exercise called chi sao, where each person is trying to strike the other in the head (of course they strike light...you're not trying to actually injure each other) and this younger guy, maybe early 30s, was doing it with him, and got a bit of an attitude and got aggressive, and Ip Man trapped his hands, and touched his nose with his fist (to prove he could have broken it if he wanted) 🙂 17:38 well it's a non-personal interpretation of God. Catholics call it "the Holy Ghost".

I think Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie since the original trilogy. The only flaw was the placing of the droids cameo. They should have appeared on the Tantive IV. Otherwise, damn near perfect.
