The game comes with House Rules, including additional gear, abilities, and campaign stuff. I love the game, having played it for years.

I'd have to agree with this review. I read it a few times, but just couldn't wrap my head around it. Also, it seemed a little too fantasy or cartoony for my tastes. (And I agree with another comment; the Hyper-Clever™ Rule Sub System Names bothered me too).

What I find grating in Spivey's writing is his verbosity and grandiosity when he trumps up ever mechanic as this INNOVATIVE thing that gets its own (TM) snazzy name, when it's mostly a collection of unusual (granted) but not-never-before-heard-of elements.. How unassuming and laid -back is Andrea S's rules writing style compared to that, who btw. also used Crossfire (TM) movement in his truly innovative Battle Sworn rules.

Was just about to mention Battle Sworn after sein the review like 5:00 deep. Pretty much the same stuff

Movement sounds super similar to Crossfire, which is cool, but that’s another rapid departure from norm rule set. I’m a fan of those rules, might have to give these a look.

Thanks for doing this. I like Rogue Planet a lot, but I agree, it's new school almost to a fault. What Spivey was going for, was a fast-paced action-filled game, but to facilitate that, he should've stuck to some familiar territory or at least maybe cut the odd special rule and it would've retained that breezy feeling. Still highly recommended, if one can stomach its punk attitude. The better Spivey game is Mayhem in my opinion, that's how I came to Rogue Planet.

Thanks for posting the review, for what is very likely a very marmite set of rules, you love them or hate them. I picked these up when they were on sale on Wargame Vault a while ago and that included the set you reviewed and the glossier updated Derelict Planet edition as well as house rules etc and for what they are they represent good value. Once you get your head around what is going on they can provide a decent game, except if you or your oppoenent has to win at all costs, they provide plenty of room for squabbles. I think at its core is the simple fact that the author was trying to be too innovative and tried to cram in a lot, which in itself was okay but his writing style lets him down. That said we are looking a self published set of rules from 2014, which are of their time. There has been a OSR revival going on in wargaming and rpgs over the last couple of years and RP sits right in there, but I am afraid is simply not the best. I much prefer the more polished Planet 28 or the excellently playable Space Weirdos to scratch that sci fi skirmish itch - that said we had a blast (no pun intended) the other week when I dug out my venerable copies of Laserburn and its supplements (ah to think they engendered the behemoth that is 40 k). Have you tried Space Station Zero yet, it would seem to be right up your street, given the rues you hve played lately?

No on SS0, but funny you should mention Laserburn...

Looks interesting, but for now I have enough to keep me busy.

I have to read EVERY set of rules several times! But that's part of the appeal of the hobby right? Unless it's just me that's an ageing dimwit.
