So... I Tried ANTHEM In 2024

Five years after its release, I finally decided to check out 2019's Anthem. As a big fan of the Looter Shooter genre, and 3rd person shooters in particular- I knew at some point I needed to experience the game that soared big in potential, but fell under the weight of player expectation. Because you mentioned the 30fps…anthem is one of the fps boost titles. In the game settings of the game itself on your Xbox (Burger Button and then manage installed game) you can activate fps boost. This unlocks the fps for the game and you can play in 60fps.

In my opinion there has never been another game that lets you just fly around in an open world immediately engage in combat and leave. The power fantasy and combat mechanics were sooo good

I miss this game so much. The 'base' ranger class actually had such a wonderful gameplay loop centered around grenade and gun combo's/multipliers that felt better than most other games I've ever played. They absolutely nailed the personality of each class and you never felt bad being grouped with any variation of suits because they all brought great stuff to the table. Heartbreaking what happened to the game honestly.

My favourite suit HAD to be the big beefy boy. Shield, big cannon, can have heavy weapons, I loved it.

I really enjoyed Anthem, as a person with over 246 hours. The combat is actually fun, and the flight is some of the best flight I have played. You can actually feel how different the different suits are in playstyles. There was decent variance in weapons. You could customize your suits and load out. This game actually seemed like it would challenge Destiny.

Chaotic development (making Bioware crumbling on themselves), game released too soon, bugged af, poor endgame content and the list goes on. Its one of those things. I LOVE Anthem. Replaying it is so bittersweet. Because it is fun, and beautiful and unique. But the campaign really is empty and boring. And you see so many little things "ugh if they had just done this or that, it would have been so much better". but we'll never see a sequel or likely any attempt at something similar. We'll never know an Anthem fully realized because Bioware gave up.

This game had so much potential for something grand. If EA weren't so greedy, they could have kept the OG development team intact from the beginning and delivered on the epic story we were led to believe it was going to have. I'm honestly surprised the servers are still live. I can only hope that one day EA will see what they missed and will put another team together to finish what was started.

History of this game. Bioware dragged their feet until 18 months before the game was released. What we played was what they could do in that time frame. They wasted like 3 years before that. After Anthem failed, Bioware assigned a small team to create Anthem 2.0. They were adding skill trees, new classes, and a real road map to more changes. EA decided during the Pandemic to shut it all down. It will never be finished.

Oh man..... I wanted soooo badly to be super in love with this game. In some ways I kind of was. As you stated very accurately, the bones were amazing. I played day 1, and the game had a lot of issues at the start that took a while to fix, then there was lack of content(end game close to non exostant and story content was very short as well), and some major balance issues. I personally really enjoyed my time playing it, mained an interceptor and it was really enjoyable to me. Darting around, super OP melee, just felt right to me. Had moment that it was super squish, but there were some mechanics to help mitigate that. It was an amazing idea, and they did do really good at some aspects of the game, as other ls have said it is a shame that it didn't have the support it needed because I can only imagine how awesome it would be right now.

yea lack of content is a given for live service games at launch. that's how it works. world and content build over time. every live service game goes through this. but the hate it got was crazy overblown imo. should have just said the issues and then let the devs build and grow the universe. instead hate lasted years and so EA decided why spend the $$$$ if we are getting bad publicity anyway? i don't blame them. the community and the media needs to know when to shut up sometimes. it kills games and studios.

@@nicholaswilkerson501 Bullshit! Thats just excuses, and I'm so tired of hiring it. And, thats from someone who played Anthem for a year and still hopped back in sometimes for another year... Even got friends on and played the story with them. But, yall are fooling yourself if you think "IT WAS THE FANS FAULT" Destiny had the same level of hate for a whole year. And, you know what saved the game... The 1st expansion that came out a year after release. Thats what Anthem didn't have. 2 years later and no major update or expansion showing that the game could be saved Anthem 2.0 wasn't gonna be that either. People act like that was the game saving moment that EA robbed us of, but all it was gonna be was basic rework of game functions, QoL features, and bug fixes to get the game to a better functioning and scalable state. THEN, one fateful day, they would finally have added more actual content to the game. Now, keep in mind that Destiny, it's biggest competitor, already had 4 content DLCs and 2 major expansions given the same amount of time. And Destiny was the biggest laughing stock of the gaming world, so that alone doesn't tank a game. Not being able to turn it around was the problem.

If you read more into it and it’s development, you’ll surprisingly see that BioWare is the one at fault for Anthems downfall, not EA. Not saying that EA is great but BioWare really dropped the ball in terms of development.

It got a lot of unwarranted hate, even for the graphics because apparently they didn’t look like the reveal trailer graphics. This is a pretty rare case of the gamers themselves being the downfall of the game. The gamers left it behind way before the devs did. I’ve been trying to find a game to match the joy I found playing Anthem, so far all I can find is Warframe.

I remember at one point one of the statues for a mission lost it's texture so it was just a pink square. Also they couldn't seem to get loot drop to work at all. no matter the difficulty you just never got anything.

People left for a number of reasons. 1. Always online, 2. Unstable servers 3. Poorly written story (considering it was a "Bioware" game) 4. Too many repetitive quest/mission. 5. Unsatisfying loot drops. On their own, these issues are manageable since the actual gameplay was fun and addicting. But put them together and the game gets old. The worst thing they did was lock players out of main story missions until they completed an unnecessary amount of side missions to pad out the game, in a lazy attempt to make the campaign seem longer. But it only made it worse smh. Even I jumped ship cause the story wasn't interesting enough for me to grind just to finish the main story. I am a huge Mass Effect fan and can remember every characters name in my sleep. But Anthem? Couldn't tell you one person's name or backstory.

Lmao. I absolutely screamed when you used the interceptor. It’s a speedy melee glass canon* build. You snipe and then run in and do clean up. And yes the super is just a big melee. Your supposed to do hit and run crowd control It helps when you have a team. Solo, the interceptor is like hard mode. You are the blade to the titans shield to the rangers steady damage and the storms crowd control.

@@Emma_2Banks No.....They gave us a mediocre game, with a solid foundation, weak loot, dumb enemies and a story that isn't that interesting, because they didn't really know what the heck the "Anthem" was and were trying to piece it together as the game was coming together... and people were supposed to keep playing that until they got it right? They owed the gaming community after that BS or at least their audience that paid. They had the opportunity to have their "Hello Games Moment" and redeem themselves with Anthem 2.0, but they bailed. Shame on them, and it's just a shame in general, because (as I said before...) the game had a solid foundation.

As a person who logged many hours in Anthem even after thry stopped supporting it which was pretty early in the games life. The biggest problem was setver stability when it released. EA rushed Bioware to release this game before it was ready to launch.

This game was so amazing even the soundtrack would pull you in even more. They had everything the world, weapons, flying mechanics, cinematics, vivid visuals, amazing creatures. I hope one day someone can revive this to what they also showed at E3 which as we now know was a fake gameplay trailer. But that trailer alone is what everyone wanted that is what we had been waiting for. Sadly I don't think we will ever get any type of game that literally made every gamer say YESSSSS FINALLY. New games now you just get the emotion of eh yeah I'll play that I guess.

oh god Anthem... I remember telling myself this is going to be a game that I'd play next to Division 2. What happened to Anthem is tragic. btw, If I remember the ult of the Interceptor gives you faster and higher melee damage, plus you are immune to damage during the ult. I believe with some mods you can extend the duration of the ult and increase damage, which was good for Boss fights. It's been a while so I'm not 100% sure if that's still the case.

Played through Anthem twice and like you said, at the core, EVERYTHING about the game was PERFECT!!! The movement mechanics were incredible, the areas looked AMAZING!!!! It was really theirs to throw away as it really could have been an INCREDIBLE title for a LOOOONG TIME!!! Could have been along the lines of Destiny with being a great looter shooter for ages to come, it is such a heartbreak that they just threw it down the toilet.

I played it back in the day and every few months i jump back on it. Its a really good game. Free play is fun and theres always one or two others on (i play grandmaster 1 difficulty) and the boss fights are awesome. Its always cool getting new legendary gear and comparing the perks that are attached are a really good way of doing things!

The feel of movement and the fantasy of having an ironman suit are the best things about this game, the issue for me was the lack of content after about 40-50 hours, id smashed that bug boss about 200 times on the hardest difficulty, going back would be difficult but not impossible

There are actually still 6 devs from what I heard in the dev team. And they have content ready that was sadly canceled. However there is a petition that’s getting like 1,000 signatures each week to get them to release that big update

Back in the day when the reveal trailer had just came out, me and my 4 friends preorder the game we even played the beta, we were so excited when it came out and played for 2 months straight, then we started to notice that the game was so repetitive and higher dificulty was only bigger health pools, also there was little to no progresion in the campaing, bugs started to show up, and eventually it died. I played and completed the main story of Anthem in 2023 fantastic game. I wanted to keep playing, as I really was enjoying it, but most post main campaign content required a party and it was difficult finding people to do it with.

I don't think he ever figured out the combo system. If you're interested, you apply an ailment to an enemy then detonate it to create a burst. for the interceptor it's the poison grenade followed by the melee.

This was a genuine blast to play, whether you were solo or had people to group up with. My wife and I were excited to get home and play Anthem together, and sometimes we would have a couple buddies around too that got it and we had a full group. If it had any kind of revival, I know we would play the absolute crap out of it all over again. Big RIP to Anthem, one of my favorite games that got abandoned.

I’m also, a big fan of looter shooters and 3rd person shooters! I love your Division content and have learned so much from you! Seeing you branch out and trying different things is really great too! I played Anthem the first month it came out but, stopped when I was farming loot and when I found some amazing loot for my build. Anthem would crash 5-10 minutes later and didn’t save what I found! After losing my loot because of the game not saving like it should have. I was left very sad and frustrated after putting in time and effort just to lose all my loot outside of my control! I still think and agree at its core Anthem had so much potential but, ultimately couldn’t live up to people’s expectations and said potential!

I remember this game fondly. I bought the founder pack and everything. It was great to play and had a really neat universe, and was super beautiful. They just couldn't get it all to come together. I really wish it would make a comeback. (Been playing Warframe to fill the void in my life)

I'm a 3rd type not brought up; Played Anthem, woe-d it's abandonment, and caught sight of this video and got curious what a "fresh perspective " in 2024 would be of it after i played around with the game adn got to the point where i ran out of "enjoyable" content i was pulled to try out GR: Breakpoint; wildly different games but in overall gameplay mechanics Anthem hold so much novel and innovative potential that as wasted, it is saddening and maddening; and your perspective is appreciated and agreed with; also I went Interceptor first unlock myself

I played the game from launch and loved it. It was the end game where I started to feel like something was missing. I played on Xbox back then and after watching this is played is on PlayStation. I had a good time actually and to my surprise a lot of people were playing too. The launch bay was filled with players. So I’m gonna stick around for bit with this game again. Thanks man!

Got it got 1$ on PC last year and then 100% it. I'ven done quite a few coop expeditions, got some high tier legendary gear, etc. It's most wasted potential in history of wasted potentials. I've considered preordering it. Even world map gets snowy on Christmas. Make initial word 2x bigger, add more in story dlc, few patches and you have decend game. It looks and runs great.

My favorite Javelin is the Storm I really hope another team picks up the game and does it justice this time around. It was great when it first came out but it lacked support and updates.

The premise and gameplay of anthem was great. You just had to look past all of the game breaking bugs that were in it for the first few months of release, like being stuck behind a barrier if you spawned in mid-mission. And the barebones end-game content. Being a big Mass Effect fan, I was hoping for better, considering Bioware scrapped future Mass Effect Andromeda content to focus on this, which even that game seemed lackluster compared to the original trilogy.

After watching this video I decided to give it a go for a playthrough..but I could not get the game to launch on ps5..it would crash before getting to title screen. I didn't try to delete and re download... really enjoyed the video and videos like these

My environmental art teacher said he did a lot of concept art for Anthem, most were flowers, shrubs, and some trees. Most of which never made it through the final project. However, it is a common thing. You’ll draw up over 100 things only for 1 or none to be used, but asked to draw up another hundred variations of whatever they’re looking for.

I wanted this to be my next Destiny sooo much. And I loved so much about it. There just wasn’t enough to explore, it was terribly bugged and the loot was terrible for months. I was one of the diehards that kept playing while others left, and was very much looking forward to 2.0. Such a shame.

Would love to see a reboot or something. I definitely put this game up there as one of the biggest "What Ifs" in gaming. Like What If Anthem lived up to the hype and didn't fumble, could've been an outstanding franchise.

I actually know a guy who worked on this game. He was a BioWare veteran and he left the studio because of this game
