I’m curious where the line is between honoring other musical cultures and appropriation. Many bands, usually British, introduced the sounds of former British colonies and brought them to mainstream awareness. Does Blondie’s use of rap constitute appropriation or absorption? Talking Heads? Peter Gabriel obviously. Paul Simon? Just curious what other people think.

Peter Gabriel believed we could all come together through music, dance, and the blending of culture, not the separation of culture. This proves he was absolutely right. Everyone who hears,, and sees this video loves it. He called this world music.

Peter G' helped establish a recording studio in the 80's to record and promote musicians from around the World. WOMAD -World of music, arts, and dance. I have several CD's from the artists. There have been concert tour with WOMAD musicians, and Rock or Hip-hop. I saw two of these concerts in 1993, and 1994. There were musicians from African nations, Japan, India -with western musicians like Crowded House, Arrested Development, Lenny Kravitz, Midnight Oil, and Peter Gabriel as the headliner. The choreography, and band, and singers were like this performance. The singer near the end was Youssou N'Dour, from Senegal (if you can't figure out his language) - he and Peter G' did several collaborations.

There's a lot of talent on the stage there. Tony Levin is one of the best bassists out there (plays with King Crimson amongst others.) Manu Katche is a monster drummer. The violinist is one of the best Indian classical violinists, who is playing stuff vastly below his capabilities here but it's got to be fun doing these shows with Peter (he also played on some of Phil Collin's solo albums as well.) The female vocalist is Paula Cole who had a good solo career in the 90s (check out her song Mississippi, which is killer.) And of course Peter who was the singer for Genesis during their classic period, and who had hit after hit during the 90s. See the live version of Red Rain as well, which is amazing and Katche just kills that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/en24oWmGg7mcbac

I saw Paula Cole a while after this concert, when she was opening for Sarah McLachlan. She’s amazing. Her first album gets sadly overlooked - it was so badly promoted that she was eligible for (and won) the Best New Artist Grammy for her second album. She’s mostly known for “I Don’t Want to Wait” and “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” but they don’t have half the punch of her really emotional work, like “I Am So Ordinary” “Feelin’ Love” or “Hush Hush Hush.” (The last of which features Peter Gabriel as a guest vocalist.)

😁 Saw him at Shea Stadium and we were on the 7 train platform still singing 'Biko'! 😒 We crazy like that in NY yo! Same thing happens when U2 plays and close with '40'! 😏 I sing on train platforms alot after shows at Shea, MSG & Yankee Stadium! 🤗 Shout Out 4, N/Q & 7 trains for the quick ride home after concerts! 🐰

If you like this kind of thing, with a lot of really talented musicians on stage doing their thing, you should check out a few of these artists. Live of course.. Paul Simon Possibly America's greatest songwriter ever, he did one album with African influence including Ladysmith Mombasa and another album with Latin influence. The Bamboos Australian funk/groove band that pair up with amazing solo singers from across the pond. Usually females leads. Lots of horns. Tedeschi Trucks Band This is a husband and wife duo. He is the best slide guitar player in the world, ever. She has an incredible voice and plays a mean guitar herself. They surround themselves with other talented musicians. Bluesy, jazzy sound. Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers Bruce is a killer piano player and really talented songwriter. Again he surrounds himself with really talented musicians and they all get to shine. He covers a lot of genres. If any of these sound interesting, let me know and I'll share some links. 🙏🤙

The concert version is so extended, and so full of visual detail, that it almost seems like a different song. The regular recorded version will give you a clearer idea of the core song, and is well worth listening to also. The female singer you liked so well is Paula Cole, who went on to a solo career.

I have a question: Is the african singer Youssou N'Dour the same who sings "7 seconds" with Neneh Cherry? What a voice! All the artists with a wonderful stage presence up there too. You are very sweet in your reactions. I love them. It brings me joy & emotions specially because the songs you react to are mostly my favorites. Those Pink Floyd reactions, f.i. Thanks!

The Female Singer is Paula Cole. She has some excellent songs in her own right. This tour was heavily influenced by his African tour. He played with many musicians in many villages and such all around Africa. His live music is outstanding as well as an incredible stage show.

This clip and Rogue, this is how Sunday is supposed to work! Thank you so much Rogue, I'm 😁 now!! ❣️🌹 The female solo vocalist is Paula Cole, interpretative dancer/vocalist extraordinaire! And talk about inclusiveness, I have no clue who that incredible drummer is, but under that lighting, that gifted man looks like a Klingon! 😂

The drummer is Manu Katche. He is #57 on Rolling Stones (admittedly deeply flawed) list of 100 greatest drummers of all time. The whole band is pretty much an 'all-star' team. Great show -there's never been anything like it.

Ya gotta do "Shaking the tree " from this tour! Alot of his music is African influenced. That's singer Paula Cole in this video. She toured with him for awhile. She had hits in the 90's one of which was the theme song for tv series Dawson's creek.

Saw him in concert 3 times. In 1987 in Italy, when So came out and in 1993 twice during this tour, in Rome and in Vancouver. Life changing, sublime and other worldly. Interesting was the difference the audience made in the experience. Italians are huge Peter Gabriel devotees and much more passionate as well as participative in concerts. So grateful to have enjoyed this live!!!

‘Steam’ from this concert will blow you away. This is from a time called World Music. Much African influence. The man in the red Barrett is a famous African artist. The Lady is Paula Cole. An accomplished artist in her own right. The album version of this song is freaking amazing but this takes it to another level. Peter Gabriel is in my top 5 fave artists list. The song & video of ‘Big Time’ is unbelievable. Too many out of this world songs. He is genius personified.
