Shweta Shetty - Style Icon, Pop Sensation of 90s.
Shweta’s physical attributes are as unconventional as her vocal chords.
Dark, slender and husky - Shweta Shetty is not our conventional beauty.
Yet she can make men parrot - Dil Tote Tote Ho Gaya.
Her story began during the early 90s.
While her cousin - Shilpa Shetty signed her debut film Baazigar, with Shahrukh Khan, Shweta Shetty signed up with Magnasound, a new record company that specialized in Indian Classical, Indian rock and Indi pop.
Magnasound created opportunities for young and promising new talents like Baba Sehgal, Alisha Chinai, Daler Mehndi. Established names like Asha Bhosle and AR Rahman too recorded their albums with Magnasound.
It was one of the first Indian labels to concentrate on music videos to target the MTV generation.
Shweta’s first album was yet to be recorded, when she was chosen to sing for te movie Roja (Hindi). No wonder many eyebrows were raised.
She hit big time with her song in Roja - Rukmini Rukmini.
It was a duet that she sang with rapper Baba Sehgal. (Roja was directed by Mani Ratnam, its cast included Arvind Swami, Madhoo and Pankaj Kapur).
This was followed by Mangta Hai Kya - for Rangeela.
Now her Co-singer was the composer himself - AR Rahman. (Rangeela was directed by Ram Gopal Varma, starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, Jacky Shroff)

True. This song is very hatke even in ARR’s compositions. So ahead of time song again.. even today this song has such magic that no other trendy song of this day could match! That’s why we love this man so much, so much out of the box in each and every song. The beat and the groove itself drives you crazy and Shweta Shetty sings it so magically on top of her voice. I’d say this is much better singing than her own pop album.

Appreciate the fact that interview was lengthy and been in one episode which is enough as she had only sing two songs. Though I didn’t quite listen to the Hindi Rukmani version, I love her opera style singing so much in Rangeela. She sounded every bit like a pop queen straight from the west here. She literally gave her best as she mentioned. I wished she could have stayed a little longer even with ARR and leave some more foot prints. Despite being somewhat unconventional voices among the mainstream ones we used to hear, she excelled in every song she sang and this is just her pearly peak performance and there’s no super de oopar song than this in her career, esp. in terms of her singing. Rahman’s magic works even more wonders with new, fresh or unconventional voices and he did it just that with Mantra hai kya. He took her singing to an altogether different level surprising and even had us goose bumps each time you listen to it. True. This song is very hatke even in ARR’s compositions. So ahead-of-time song again.. even today this song has such magic that no other trendy song of this day could match! That’s why we love this man so much, so much out of the box in each and every song. The beat and the groove itself drives you crazy and Shweta Shetty sings it so magically on top of her voice. I’d say this is much better singing than her own pop album. We wish her career graph to have been much longer just ‘coz of this one song!

It was Mr. Rahman who sang. Though the director RGV and Aamir were apprehensive yet they decided to go ahead with Mr. Rahman's decision. What have Shweta's physical attributes got anything to do with her talent or singing skills? II am sure you can find better expressions and tasteful words than Dark, Slender, Physical Attributes etc. for profiling this prolific singer of the 90s. I am not sure if Rukmani Rukmani or Mangta hai Kya are right up there among Rahman's compositions and what was it that prompted you to choose Shweta for this episode. The lady is sweet, genuine, enthusiastic and even makes it a point to pitch her candidature for a new song! But surely there are others who deserve to be heard as well. I am looking forward for you to get Rahman's collaborators for years - His musicians - Sivamani, Ranjit Barot, Naveen, Ashwin Srinivasan, Karthik Devaraj, Sanket Naik, Keba Jeremiah, Mohini Dey. Darshan Doshi - I've given you a full list - get them for a couple of episodes - to talk about their moments with maestro up close and personal. Get under the skin of the magic that Rahman is. Nonsense - she is as good as any collaborators of ARR - she has given insight how ARR records back in the 90s - it’s great to know that it was Magnasound that recommended her as the Hindi version was released by Magnasound. I like mangta hai kya song more now. The initial start of the continous beat of great quality of sound with amazing rhythm. And then comes the use of differrent variety of sounds switching perhaps and seemlesly and then picjing up the beats then returning back to original rhythm and towards the end of the song apausr with some opera like singing gives it more energy. It now looks he composed an amazibg musical song which is like it is for the todays times.
