Rokinon 135mm F/2.0 ED UMC Lens

I've been using the Rokinon 135mm F/2.0 ED UMC lens for astrophotography in the backyard for the past week or so, and I now see why it's such a popular camera lens in the community.
My favorite aspect of the Rokinon 135mm F/2 is the mid-range focal length, which creates some incredible framing opportunities for large deep sky objects, or multiple targets at once.
The focusing adjustment ring has great tension, which helps when using live-view on your DSLR camera to focus a star. For the best results, most amateur astrophotographers recommend shooting at F/4 with this lens.

7:50 Tip: you can activate an all-sky survey by going to 'sky and viewing options' -> 'Surveys' and then activate any of the 'DSS' surveys by selecting them and pressing 'ctrl + alt + D' to turn the surveys on. Its a super deep photographic survey with many faint nebulae also!

Just a quick comment regarding the lens hood comment you made. The lens hood generally is only useful when there is ambient light that can enter the lens from weird angles. Looking into a night sky, where there are no streetlights or other point lights near or in the frame, the hood really isn't needed. Therefore, for most astrophotography, the hood can be removed. By the way...loved the video about "why I do it". I hope everyone got the bigger message that your philosophy applies to anyone's hobby.

I completely agree with that focal length versatility and imaging capability. I have had great success using the Askar FMA135 lens. It is also a good product for this focal length, and probably a lot cheaper too. Of course it is not suitable for anything larger than a crop sensor camera. You can see several 135mm image examples on my KZbin channel as well.

I hear good things about this lens. Both super sharp at f2 and not expensive. Have you tried Meade ETX90 for astro? you can get them used for 100-200$, very potent lens/telescope. unbeatable for the money. blows away refractors costing 20x more. and it's quite compact.

I also use the Rokinon 135 for astro. It is a great lens for the money. The 85mm version is great too. BTW - Rokinon, Samyang, and Bower are all the same company and the same lenses. For some reason, the Samyang versions of the lenses are slightly cheaper. Excellent channel Trevor - keep up the good work!

I have used this lens with the SW Adventurer for a couple years. It is amazingly sharp, has a long focus adjustment (it must rotate 270 degrees!) that makes fine tuning easy. This is also a great portrait lens. I use f4 for and the sharpness is incredible. Samyang is a brand and the parent company. Rokinon, Bower, etc. are just brands. There are multiple versions if you are buying used. I believe they made one which was just about the same less the metering chip.

Mylo put it in your Amazon wish list and they will notify you when it goes on sale again. Another trick I read on the internet is to put something you want in your Cart but don’t buy it in 2 or more sellers at the same time. Like Amazon, B&H, Adriana, etc. then 1 or more seeing that will offer you a better price to entice you to buy. Worth a try if you’re serious about buying it.

Nice results! I looked at this lens as I already have the Samyang 12mm f2 & 8mm f2.8 for milky way shots, however the price put me off a little. I'm currently using a Zeiss Jena 135/3.5 Sonnar for that focal length with a focal reducer on Fuji, it's sharp and on a tracking mount the slower aperture doesn't matter too much.

They say the focal length equivalent is 202 mm when shooting on micro four thirds..what does that mean?
@XanderMarjoram
@XanderMarjoram 3 жыл бұрын
I would say it's actually closer to 270mm, as Micro 4/3rds has a "crop factor" of 2 (135 x 2 = 270). You may be thinking of a Nikon/Sony APS-C sensor, where you will get ~202mm as the crop factor is 1.5 (135 x 2 = 202.5). The crop factor roughly correlates with the diagonal measurement across the sensor. For a full frame sensor it measures about ~43.2mm from one corner to the other, and a micro 4/3rds sensor is 21.6mm, which makes your image appear more zoomed in (43.2 / 21.6 = 2), in reality it's only capturing the middle portion of the image that is projected by the lens. In other words, an image from a 135mm lens on a Micro 4/3rds body will have the same appearance as one from a 270mm lens on a full frame camera (although full frame sensors have other benefits).
@nordic5490
@nordic5490 3 жыл бұрын
The correct term is 'field of view' fov, in degrees. This lens has a diagonal fov corner to corner of 18.8° on a full frame sensor. On a m43 sensor, the fov will be half, = a diagonal fov of 9.4°

Hi Trevor! How do you point to the correct region of the sky having a long lens like this? I'm currently getting my feet wet with a 18-200 zoom lens and take advantage of the wide end of the zoom to do a rough composition before zooming in. The issue is that is f/5.3 at the 200mm end so I was wondering how to manage this with a prime long lens.

It can be tough in regions with no bright stars. It may take some trial and error - I use the Stellarium mobile app for a rough idea - and then take 10-second test images to frame things up. Targets like the Sadr region in Cygnus are dead simple because the Sadr star will show up in your live view display. You can frame it up in real time :)

Also, since full frame sensors are better at gathering light, wouldn't there be a benefit using a full frame camera for astrophotography ? Is there any equivalent filters for full frame camera? (If so, could your share description or link on these filters?)🦉📷🔭⭐☄

Great Info specially for a beginner (me). Now could you recommend a lens for a close-up of the moon and planet for a Canon T7i and do you think that is a good camera? I could really use your help since I am just learning about all of this stuff. So if you recommend a lens not so expensive it would be nice but I also know the best lenses can be very costly. I just would love to be able to see the planets and the moon as close as posible. Thank in advance for your time and help.

Just bought a Rokinon 135mm F/2 and I have a Canon T3i. Would you recommend against a teleconverter lens added? Or if good, can you recommend one?

Does the lens require some field flattener? How’s vignetting? The appeal of RedCat 51 is that Petzval design and flat images. I’ve used 50mm prime, 85 mm prime (Nikon) and 200-500 mm telephoto. Those prime lenses have about 40% of useful flat image with round stars...

It dependso n the camera, but with full frame/aps-c, it does vignette wide open. You can easily correct this in post processing, using flat frames. As for distortions, they're very well controlled! The only thing that will flatten, is your wallet :) But it's worth every penny!

Pierre Thanks! I may consider this lens then. It’s not that much cheaper than the RedCat 51 though. Apropos wallet - hah 😄 I’m in the wrong hobby to worry about it... it gets attacked regularly 😄

I want one of these to shoot with my T3 on my Skytracker Pro. Do you think the Pro can handle the size and weight? I am used to shooting 50mm and under. I have some great dark skies when weather cooperates. Thanks!

Great video and review ( and Greetings from the U.K) Looks a great lens... I have a Canon 80D (crop sensor) and as you said in your video, it’s not really an ideal lens for singular DSO’s such as galaxies and such, but could you recommend a lens for the 80D that I could shoot those with , especially Andromeda?

I am currently shooting Olympus (MFT) but am looking to upgrade to either the A7iii or Fuji X-T3. I am so torn, but at least I know what one of my first lenses will be 😂 Any advice or suggestions one way or the other would be greatly appreciated.

Ben Mercier if you’re mostly into photography, i would highly recommend the a7iii over the xt3. While the xt3 is a fantastic camera with very healthy features, especially for video, the larger full frame sensor of the a7iii will give you a couple more stops of dynamic range and less noise.
