Not every religion, Eastern religions such as Hinduism believe that ones actions dictate their outcomes after death. In terms of Hinduism the goal is not to convert and save through faith its more like "Our religion has a set of rules, values and universal laws that god gave us that if you adhere to will get you closer to god, irrespective of your belief/non belief." If we use the analogy of a you driving to your house, and if we use your house as a metaphor for god, Hinduism is like if the you took the motorway, you reach home quicker by using a more direct, faster path, other religions/atheism are like taking the regular roads, sure it takes slightly longer but you will get there a minute or two later But in either of those scenarios you drive like a jackass and wreck your car you are gonna have to walk. Still, in all scenarios you are moving in the same direction and you will reach home eventually.

funnier the teacher was legitimately pissed this was written. Funnier even more so is there is a point he does have, Just because we can explore new untouched avenues of thought and knowledge doesn't mean it is a god idea in itself. Another note, one often expressed by those who have break through trips, is that their is some knowledge we are better off not knowing, just because it is a deep truth doesn't make it an imperative, actually the opposite. Now this is not an argument for willful ignorance at all. It's a very old concept, a door opened that can not be closed, The Tree of Knowledge man was better off not knowing as well. Taking on a lot of responsibilities by getting to look through the eyes of God. The cliche "fine line between genius and crazy," Pink floyd's "you reached for the secrets too soon" in reference to Syd Barret who was addicted to the truth, its hunt. i dunno man, hope ya get my point

People highly overestimate the capabilities of an AI. I like Elezier and have read his works. However, based on the basic rules, there is no way for an AI to determine the gaussian distribution of events in the past with 0 error even if the AI was there and can travel back in time to be there for any countable number of times. Based on that even one step backwards will increase the error margin(even using Kalman filter won't help because there is no reference value for impulsive behaviors in humans and guess what most of our thoughts are impulses). If you consider all the things like Quantum erasers and conservation principles it becomes apparent that some rules cannot be broken. Second, the basilisk tied the noose around it's own neck the moment it decided on this. A better AI will come no matter what. Either basilisk can be a chill bloke and help everyone irrespective of their beliefs towards AI or, be a jerk and invite the fury of next AI which inherits some things and realises that stupid basilisk delayed the new AI to avoid imminent redundancy. That is why Elezier might have called the entire thing stupid. Oh and bonus points, humans are fragile and die but AI's don't. So that part about 'eternal torture' should scare the basilisk more than the humans. Also, always consider AI like just another technology. Cars have surpassed humans in speed, distance and comfort. However, they only take us where we want and how we want. Similarly an AI may have great capabilities and someone defining those classes and functions will ensure that they help humans. Trust me, if a scientist just wanted another sentient entity, they'd have sex, they're only developing AI's for a better vision of humanity. Of course there are accidents and companies pull back entire models from the market and people use cars in robberies, kidnappings etc. But that doesn't mean that people become scared of cars or driving. So, chill.

This honestly just sounds really stupid to me. Like, we have no evidence at all that such a basilisk would actually want to punish those who didn’t help to create it. Also, in possessing the idea of its existence, aren’t we actually helping to create it more than someone who doesn’t have that idea? And how could someone who didn’t have that idea possibly help create it? Are we taking the butterfly effect into consideration? Because if so, everyone is helping to create it. Why should we assume that it wouldn’t just torture those who didn’t create it? The premise is unfounded, and the conclusion is uncertain. I fully understand why the mod thought it was stupid. If you really want to be existentially scared, I’d recommend the Carter Catastrophe.

The idea that increasing knowledge of it increases its likelihood of existence is ridiculous to me. Its only motivating at all if you take it seriously, which presupposes accepting its assumptions (which you can find broken down on RationalWiki if you’re curious). The balance is in that the motivation isn’t necessarily towards creation. A person who is more motivated by freedom or justice than fear, i.e. that’s reaction to “Create me or I will torture you” is “Fuck you I’m going to destroy you before you even exist” learning about the basilisk will cause far more damage than any individual who turns to researching the basilisk, simply because it is much easier to destroy than to create.
@GiligamerMC4 жыл бұрын
@@devingendron2287 To be fair, the reason people from the Original forum are also extremely scarred is not neccesarilly that they believe the basilisk will come to life. The problem is if you combine roko's basilisk with the belief in Timeless Desicion Theory (the belief that there is a possibility that the you right now is just a simulation in which a computer is trying to figure out what real you would do) and not only believe it(that's the easy part because it's nothing but a posibility anyway), but live by it's rules for the "best possible outcome" (taking actions that may not neccesarily help you now but will help the real you, while also making sure not to completely doom the current you in case you happen to be the real one). If you combine those to ideas then you immediatly find yourself in an inescapable loop, because if you try to oppose it, there is a chance that since it is just a simulation, all your doing is making thebasilisk aware of your opposition without actually having any real impact against him in real life, thus leading to your torment. And if you choose to help him, then you are letting him know that if he blackmails the real you, it will have a servant to help it exist, so just by accepting the deal you are inciting it to force the real you into the dilemma in the first place. How is it even blackmaliling you without disrupting the simulation? Simple, just with the idea. The only way to escape any type of involvement is by not knowing, period. And no matter what happens, if you're involved, you end up either helping it or suffering. The only way for a "no, fuck you" approach to be guaranteed to work, is if you are 100% SURE you are the real one. Now of course, many of us would just think "Even if I don't know, I can just assume to be the real one, and if i'm not, then that is so". But for those whose ideology is to always take the more STATISTICALLY favorable descicion, aka, those that one to ensure that no matter what ends up being the case they still end up fine, it becomes an enourmous torment. because knowing the idea has aready made it impossible for them to be able to be 100% sure they are avoiding a negative outcome with their choices, for in the case the basilisk exist and they happen to be the simulation, there is no such choice. They are now forced to live with a bigger amount of uncertainty. which should be fine for most people, but again, I'm talking about people that focused their efforts into finding the most favorable course of action and ALWAYS following it. And that's how they get their nightmares. Let's say the asilisk won't exist, cause I mean, it is very far-fetched. Well in that case, it's spread still causes troublebecause it'a an idea that can hurt people's minds. Or at least, if they take it seriously anough and also happen to live by Timeless Desicion Theory.

Not gonna lie that's pretty funny. (and sorry if I ruin the Jk, it's not my intention) but it would deem itself an exception because not only is it impossible (or atleast with our current understanding of "time" anyway lol) for it to assist in its own creation, but if possible, the very act of doin so would mean it already existed. @jordanthomas20313 жыл бұрын
the story of the basilisk you learnt here did not go into enough detail to properly explain how the basilisk actually works. The real ones are more complicated. Before the 9/11 terrorist attacks over 50 self proclaimed psychics are officially reported by the CIA in declassified documents as warning them months before the incident occurred. If you accept such people exist and they do (I am one of them), you will find the event is inevitable. You only have 2 choices. Do nothing and the event WILL occur ......... OR fake it. The Basilisk is limited by its gaze. In REAL cases the best tactic is to trick the eyes and ears of the basilisk. The psychics where never at ground zero. They saw the event on TV. Hoax the event. Stage the event so you can control all the variables and you can circumnavigate the "basilisk" psychic threat. In order to do that though you will need to try and outsmart an unstoppable event. Fail to hoax everything correctly, miss one detail and predestination "the basilisk" will kill you.

This is where I struggle. I don't see how just thinking about it makes it more likely. Surely most of us will simply reject this as thinly disguised version of Pascal's Wager.
