First I want to point out that I buy all my Rola - Chems. I do these videos BC I believe in this product.
Now in this video I explain how the Trichlor Tab is being misused by pool pros and by the home owners. This Tablet is the most misused and abused chemical in the pool industry. If used correctly this is a great product. Problem is most guys use this as a primary source of sanitation and that's not what this product is meant for.

I’m a firm believer in keeping the CYA right at 30ppm. No way to do that with stabilized chlorine so I only use liquid chlorine. I usually put about a half gallon per day of 10% in my 30,000 gallon pool in summer. Just purchased a RolaChem and cannot wait to get it installed! Then I can actually go on vacation.

Great video! I’ve been trying to figure the best way to beat the CYA problem. How many gallons of liquid chlorine do you carry on your service truck everyday? I’m wondering about space and weight constraints

Salt system is another solution, but I hate working with those for many reasons. We use tabs quite a bit in our region because 90% of the pools have sand filters and we also get a ton of rain so CYA buildup is not as much of an issue.

Yeah you're lucky to get the rain to dilute the CYA. It works good for you guys BC of that. Salt cells don't last long and they're way too much money to replace every few years.

Thanks for the video. Im a believer, done all the research. My question is, do you buy your bleach in a large say 5 gallon bucket or do you have a bucket you fill as needed. I have been hauling the 12.5% stuff from various box stores. With a 15K gal pool im assuming I will use a gallon or more a week in the hot season.
@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569
@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569 5 жыл бұрын
I but it by the case. A 15k pool will only have about 6 ppm chlorine after a gallon is poured in. The customers that don't have a RolaChem I'll leave a gallon for them to use during the week. They don't mind bc they would rather me not use the Tabs. The cost for the extra chlorine is covered in the yearly charge.

Here in Hawaii we don’t get liquid chlorine cuz it supposedly has a short shelf life and would lose it’s potency while being shipped here. So we have no choice but to run tabs and have extremely high levels of cyaniric acid. Or install salt system. Thanks for the vid. Interesting to see how different things are there compared to here.

Are you allowed to at least do partial drains? If not then how the hell are you expected to maintain balance.
@boomskis4926
@boomskis4926 5 жыл бұрын
Swimming Pool Chemistry Done Right I’ve tried to do partial drains and it doesn’t work cuz the levels so high to begin with. Gotta completely drain them. Problem is most people refuse to drain it and just have to keep using more and more chlorine to keep it looking ok. They don’t seem to care as long as the waters clear. Such a pain in the ass.

Isn't that a shame people just dont care about their pools. Can you so several partial drains? If so just keep doing those.
@boomskis4926
@boomskis4926 5 жыл бұрын
Swimming Pool Chemistry Done Right it really is. You can see on plaster pools how pores and crumbly their pools become. Seriously too high to partially drain. Gonna start sending them the links to your videos and hope they’ll watch and realize what a huge problem it is. They usually just say it looks fine. I don’t want to drain it. It really does suck cuz I feel like they think I’m trying to rip them off but really I’m trying to help them. The ones that actually care have already switched over to salt systems.

Swimming Pool Chemistry Done Right I guess it might be possible to do several partial drains but I still think most aren’t willing. Oh well maybe they’ll listen once their pools are completely destroyed and need to be resurfaced.

So im going to be installing an above ground pool. (12’x24’x54”) about 10,000 gal. I will be running the filter at least 8 hours a day and will do 4 hrs morning 4 hrs night. If I do 10hrs, 12,hrs half and half so on.... I would put both on a timer but my question is, how should I set it at to infise the correct amount of chlorine wothin the times that the filter will run? Would that be a good idea? Based on what I have read, I would need about 11oz a day, right or wrong? So now, if were to run it half morning half night, i would need about 5 or 6 oz in the morning and the other 5 or 6 oz at night run? What I calculated is based in the manual for the rola chem rc25/53 is on the 2 setting, it gives 1.20 gal daily so then if I divide that by 24hrs it comes out to about 6.3oz per hour. Technically that means I would be able to run the rola chem for one hour twice a day? Hope my calculations are correct! What would you do? Thanks!

Hello I think you're over thinking it. Everything is going to also depend on bather load and the heat of the water as well. The biggest mistake people do is they do not run the equipment while they're using the pool. They use up all the chlorine in the pool and then expect the Rolachem or a salt cell to make it up the next time the pool runs. If you have the 12 gal a day like the one I have start at the lowest setting like I have and go from there. In summer months get two turn overs. If you split your times you still need to run the equipment while the pool is being used. Then the time at night will help make up the chlorine loss during the day. Just play with it to see what works for you bc every pool is different.

Swimming Pool Chemistry Done Right yeah I thought O was overthinking it ha! I knew it couldn’t be that complicated. Now, would you recommend the 12 gallon one or I think there is a smaller version of it the RC252? Thanks!

@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569 4 жыл бұрын
The smaller one will be good for a 10k pool plus you can check it more often than once a week.

We’re in the process of doing a pool renovation. The contractor recommended an in line chlorinator, I think its a Perform Max pool sanitizer. Is this going to be an issue maybe. He said it takes chlorine pucks. We are are having new plaster done so I really would like to have this be as trouble free as possible. Was this a bad recommendation?

If you are willing to do partial drains when the CYA reaches 80 ppm than it's ok. If you get heavy rain in the winter you can use it to your advantage. Just use the Tabs in the summer time then switch to liquid in winter and let the rain water dilute the CYA level. Just keep an eye on the CYA level and do not let it get above 80. The higher it goes the more CL you need for sanitation. CL is 7.5% of your CYA level. 100 CYA level mean 7.5 ppm CL in the pool.
@Cocora22
@Cocora22 4 жыл бұрын
Swimming Pool Chemistry Done Right so the partial drain is not something that is done in the course of the summer? We lower the water level at closing in September and in a typical winter the level rises to full just with winter snow and rain. We do have a heater and we open in May and close the pool in september
@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569
@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569 4 жыл бұрын
@@Cocora22 That might work out well for you then. That will keep the CYA levels down. Depending on how many tabs you use during the swimming season you might need to switch to liquid CL towards the end of the season. Just keep an eye on the CYA once it hits 70 stop using the tabs and use CL. Just a heads up rain water is low in CH and ALk so make sure you check those levels and get the CH to at least 250 to 300.

@@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569 Thank you very much, I saved your notes so I can remember the numbers to check on things once they fill the pool. 1st 3 weeks will be a cake walk because they will monitor and adjust, but after that they'll cut me loose.

Now what do you recommend if none of your pools have a rola chem? Just liquid chlorine?
@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569
@swimmingpoolchemistrydoner5569 5 жыл бұрын
Yes 12.5% chlorine only. I usually leave a gallon of chlorine in the Summer for the customers that don't have a RolaChem and have them pour it in 4 days later. All my customers don't mind bc I explain how tabs will build up CYA then you're going to need to do a partial drain. But I'm hoping to get all customers on this system. Borates and RolaChem for a problem free pool.

Swimming Pool Chemistry Done Right thanks for the response! I just recently started my own pool business and I appreciate your videos! The guy that I have been working for for 2 years does not know chemistry. He wants me to fill up the floater every week no matter what and to not even worry about PH.

Your pH is very important in the pool. For every 1 point up or down you will affect the LSI by 1 point. Do a search for the Pool Chemistry training institute and buy a book called Pool Chemistry for Residential Pools. It a must have if you want to learn chemistry.
