ROLAND BN20 Printhead testing and replacement 2 of 2

In this video I will walk through the steps I took to replace the printhead in my Roland BN-20. In the steps leading up this this video I had been advised that I may need to have the new printhead's "Head Rank" input to get the best quality print. As a non-Roland tech, I do not have the "Service Application" to do so. With that in mind but my machine was down I went forward with the swap after watching the video by "Khristy Bell". I definitely give her props for pure determination. After all of that, I did it and didn't even need the Roland "Service Application". My BN-20 prints better than ever.

Just wanted to say thanks for the upload, you made my life significantly easier. After all the smaller diagnosis tests which I had hoped would save my printer, (manual cleaning, captop replacement, overnight headsoak), I finally bit the bullet and bought a new printhead. Followed all the steps you showed, it was as easy as making a lego set and now my prints are like brand new out of the once again Some things I wanna bring up in case anyone else needs to do this and that it was not in your videos. -The hexbit screwdriver, I recommend a really long one -Almost all screws are the same so you can chuck them all into a cup. The only screws which are different (and these are all the same so you can group these) are the ones you need to unscrew to replace the captop -There is a plastic cover for the print head you need to remove from the older print head and to transfer onto the new one. Prying it out with a flathead is the easiest way to do so

I was able to get my printer back up and running. I d not have the service application and so far everything is working. If I an get the application one day, I will do the calibration just to make sure everything works the best it can. Thanks for the videos, they were helpful!

Cheers to you! That is awesome news! I'm glad the videos aided in the journey to fixing your BN20. I'm not so sure about that "Service Application" they say we needed. The funny thing is you can key in the head rank on the larger Roland printers on their consoles. Roland should allow you to do the same in the BN20 utility. Nonetheless, your machine is working. Time to make some money!

Great video! After watching part 1 & 2, I think I might change out the print head assy (cap, etc.) myself rather than waiting on a repair person to call me back. NERVOUS!!

Hi, great video, I have unscrewed the other tree screwes (not the two that I should...hbefore I wached the video)... Tried to remove the head,.... I screw them back on the,.. IS there some damage by doing this? Thanks

As long as you’re “not” touching the surface of the print head, you should be fine. I’ve disassembled my machine a few time and never had a problem. Good luck.

Hello, can you tell which Ribbon Cable number 1 goes to the motherboard in order Thank you!

I can’t but what I would suggest is before you remove the old ribbon cable get a permanent marker draw a small line on the print head case onto the ribbon cable and do the same thing on the other end. This will give you a point of reference if you have to put the old cable back in.

Yes I did. I'm not sure if there are any aftermarket options but the Roland DGA store currently has them.

@@MsChillachin thanks for your question. It's more towards the end when refilling the head dampers. When using the "BN-20 Utility", under the option tab and perform the "Pump Ink" operation. It walks you through the process of pumping the ink with the use of the dummy cartridges

Thanks for your reply, I decided not to go ahead since finding out the cost of the replacement head was more than I wanted to spend. That and the printer which was for sale was priced such that I did not consider it viable. I guess the machine is in landfill by now. @@404photos

@@tommcmurtry3204 Once you receive your printhead, if you need to follow the steps in my first video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4rQfYuPltuEbas , they "Digiprint Supplies" advises you to test the printhead before attaching the ink lines to it. Just in case you get a faulty printhead. All the best and Good Luck!
