Had one in the 90s. Was too young and dumb to grasp its greatness. Was all into techno and house back then, like every kid else. )) Sold it (even with profit, which was quite an achievement back in the 90s, since nobody wanted "digital" synths back then, they were being deemed "unfit for techno and outdated". The only thing, that mattered in the 90s was all about cutoff and resonance - "does it have analogue 24db self oscillating filters mate?" )) I was saving for "Virtual Analog" craze like JP8000 instead - which is - compared to digitally sounding, but actually analog D-50 - was as digital as it can get, if you think about it. But big boys tech marketing goons can make your head spin and sell you "black as white" ))) So I thought, it was a good thing. It wasn't in the hindsight. Although the JP8000 is brilliant in many ways. Well, having a digital synth was considered uncool in the 90s. Yes, I know now, it's NOT really digital! But the 90s was a weird decade. Everyone wanted to make digital recordings... with analog gear! )) Nowadays its kinda the other way around.) and I kinda regret selling my D-50. Yes, you now have Roland Zen etc. (shoutout to Woody's Piano shack) I even have "KORG gadgets" for my iPad and even for my Nintendo )) but I'm with Espen on that nothing beats the real thing.

This is seriously amazing 👏. One of my all time favorite synths that I believe is under rated for its ability to do warm and rich analog sounds in a very unique lovely way. I Google searched real analog sounds on roland D50 and found your video. It was exactly what I wanted to hear and much more. Thank you!

These all sound fantastic! I used to have a D50 and was so sad when I had to sell it a few years ago due to financial issues. However, as things have looked up for me over the past year or so I was able to afford to pick up a Roland Boutique D05, which to my old ears sounds easily as good as my lovely old D50. I've just bought these patches from your site and am so looking forward to trying them out. Thanks for all your hard work on this lovely old machine, it's my all time fave synth.
@EspenKraft7 жыл бұрын
Thanks a million Nigel! I truly appreciate your support and I'm very happy the sounds is to your liking. I've yet to try the Boutique myself, and since I own the real deal I see no reason for me to get one as I use the D-550 module if I need the D-50 for gigging. However, I'm truly happy that Roland has released such a module so younger generations can be part of the D-50 experience! I've had the D-50 for so many years and it's synth that always deliver the goods, always has. As many of my old dogs, the D-50 holds its own very special place in my heart and I will forever treasure it dearly. :)

PadMAD3k hello! I have only recently been asked if I was interested in a D50 since the guy thought I might like it. I said I’ll come back to it and I love the synth after doing some research. What would be a good deal to own one of these synths? Prices seem all over the place and since you have bought it recently I figured you might could help me out in this. Greetings!

@@devingademan Hi, it depends on the condition. If you can test it, test it, play all the keys on the keyboard, push all the knobs to see if they work. If it's in a great condition I would pay max 400. If the condition isn't that good it's between 250-350. If it has some issues like a button doesn't work you can ask him to reduce the price since you need to fix it. Fixing switches is very easy but still it takes time to do it. Mine was in a mint condition, I got it with an extra expansion and a flightcase for 350 euro. I have a huge D50 sysex patch collection for you, it contains a few thousands sounds: www.mediafire.com/file/tbuaudpaliin8os/Roland_D50_SysEX_files.rar/file Just download them and upload them to your D50. I'm not sure if you know how to do that but you need to turn off memory protect on the D50. Connect the MIDI OUT from your interface to MIDI in on the D50. And connect the MIDI IN from your interface to MIDI OUT on your D50. Download MidiOX and select the sysex file and upload it to your synth. Some patches appear right after you reboot the D50. Enjoy this great synth!

PadMAD3k I would like to start by thanking you for taking the time to respond to my message and giving me all this information!! Thank you! Coincidentally, Espen uploaded a video of the D50 just a few hours later after I commented on this two year old video! That particular day, I closed the deal and the day took a drive to go pick it up. Great condition. Very pleased about it. As far of the Sysex and such, I know exactly what you mean, I have a cable for that too, but have not downloaded anything yet. A friend of mine who has one too was nice enough to send me a great collection of old magazine photos in which they appear + a lot of links and all the manuals. I’m 📖 them and so far I have read the “Creative book” of the D50. I’m still having a hard time understanding exactly what LA synthesis in it’s core being. Sure, I have read what it says, but it is hard to really “visualise” a process like that. Anyway, still lots of reading + videos to watch since they’re so many about this particular synth. Once again, thank you for taking the time and I have saved your link in my computer for my D50. Greetings from the Netherlands!

Thinking about getting a d50 atm. Can it load these patches next to the default patches?
@EspenKraft6 жыл бұрын
Of course you can. Just be aware that the D-50 has only 64 slots of storage so some of the default patches would,have to go out. These can easily be stored on your computer though, or on a memory card for the D-50.
@SyntheticFuture6 жыл бұрын
Espen Kraft that is great news! Thanks for the reply! Do you happen to have any experience with upgrading rhetoric storage of the synths? I have read a fair bit about expansion cards you can build into them but sadly not that many user experiences. Or would you say that swapping patches is easy enough that it is not even worth looking into?
@EspenKraft6 жыл бұрын
A synth like Roland D-50 swaps out patches so fast and easily though sysex data with your computer that I don't bother with memory cards anymore. I do have some and I use those, but patches I make myself I transfer through the computer. I do all the editing through sysex too.
